That's right. I'll be counting down my favourite 50 singles that topped the UK charts. In a thread. Soon. Here. I promise.

Predictions are welcome.

50 - Brim Full of Asha (Normal Cook Remix) - Cornershop

First up a number 1 from 1998 - a vintage year for number 1s. Brim Full of Asha had been released as a single by Cornershop in 1997. It missed the Top 40. It was a much slower song and many prefer it to this remix.

Norman Cook/Fat Boy Slim sped it up and piled on lots of big beats and whistles and bells and made it irresistible. It shot straight to number 1 on release. This is the extended version as the orginal doesn't seem to be on Youtube.

49 - She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah - The Beatles

Next up the older number 1 in this countdown - from 1963. I'm not a huge Beatles fan and it took me years to like this. It is the insistent Yeah Yeah Yeah at the end that I love.

48 - KLF - 3AM Eteranl

Their only number 1 from 1991 - a decent year for number 1s despite Bryan Adams. This isn't even their best song but it's still. One of the most original bands ever.

47 - Erasure - Voulez Vous (from the ABBA-esque EP)

It took them a while to reach number 1 despite many many great singles. They had to cover some ABBA songs to manage it in 1992. This was the best cover of the four tracks as Vince changed the riff slightly to make it fit more into an electro-pop song.

46 - Justin Timblerlake - SexyBack

Timbaland's two note hook and lack of baseline, Timberlake's unrecognisable vocals, sparse samples wound into a tight funk. Not the most pleasureable song but eternally rewarding.

45 - Snap! - Rhythm is a Dancer.

Electro-symphonic masterpiece.

44 - Sugababes - About You Now

Broad-stoke melody cuts like a knife. Their most melodic number 1.

43 - Black Box - Ride on Time

Powerful and catchy as hell. Funky bassline is the best bit.
