The Pipettes now consist of Gwenno Saunders and her sister Ani.

Founder members "Rosay" Rose Elinor Dougall and "RiotBecki" Rebecca Stephens left in 2008 to pursue a solo career singing indie-folk pop tunes; and a session singer (only this week Rebecca was on Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie show singing in session supporting Californian songstress Jesca Hoop) respectively.

Whilst singers Anna McDonald & Beth Mburu-Bowie have come and gone since then (and you thought the Sugababes were bad!)

However the Cassettes backing band of Monster Bobby, Jon Falcone, Seb Falcone & Alex White remain.

Produced by Martin Rushent, 'Our Love Was Saved By Spacemen' is a three minute space pop teaser from the Pipettes as yet untitled forthcoming album showcasing their more new wave early 1980s retro sound.

This tune is all about what happens when your boyfriend's brain is wiped by aliens: he gets to fall in love with you all over again.

Download the song for free now at: http:///www.thepipettes.co.uk.

They will also be releasing a new single proper on April 19th. It's called 'Stop The Music' and it'll be available on CD, 7" record and a digital bundle through the indie pop label, Fortuna POP! (The Pains of Being Pure At Heart).

Again it is produced by Martin Rushent ('the Human League, Shirley Bassett, Jerry Lee Lewis) and has a remix by Justus Köhncke, Kompakt. They'll also be playing a few shows around the release of the single.

Thoughts on the track and new sound?

I like the track and will buy the album when it surfaces but it really does feel and sound like a completely different act to me now. Their first album was pop perfection and my soundtrack to summer 2006, along with Lily Allen's Alright Still. I doubt they'll be able to come close to its brilliance but I shall listen and judge with an open mind.

From the youtube'd live performances I think it is pretty safe to say they have stronger material lined up on the album; Stop The Music & From Today especially sound like belters and classic girl-group single material.

But my fave is the very new wave sounding Gwenno penned live demo I've Been Searching:

Mmmm....the original Sugababes and the first band to lose all its original members (I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that Gwenno joined after the band started)

May give them a go as the original band were brilliant (and that was largely due to the Cassettes)

In other news though, Rose Elinor Dougall's solo stuff up until now has massively eclipsed her stuff with the Pipettes.

I loved "Start/Stop/Synchro" (it topped my Personal Chart) as it reminded me of Siouxsie Sioux going all folk; her debut single "Another Version of Pop Song" was a great introduction which in retrospect was a cross between her former group and the material she is working on now; but the third single "Fallen Over" left me underwhelmed.

Still, I look forward to her debut album in 2010.

I agree completely - Start / Stop / Synchro was one of my favourite records of the year and I'm also hoping for good things from her solo LP.

I'm a bit perplexed as to why the best song they've done in years has been relegated to b-side status on the Stop The Music EP (particularly when the underwhelming 'Our Love Was Saved By Spacemen' gets a slot on the album) if nothing else though, it's massively heightened my interest in the album, even though it most certainly isn't indie and I should be posting this in the pop forum! #2 in my personal chart, absolutely love it

So I'll Say Goodbye

Personally im rather taken with Stop The Music, i've overplayed it a bit and its by no means their best song (Pull Shapes) but a great song never the less.

So I'll Say Goodbye seemed a bit of a non-event for first half of the song but it really seemed to kick into gear as things went on.

That's my only reservation with So I'll Say Goodbye if there is one, it takes far too long to get to the great part of the song (the post-chorus?), but still, it doesn't deserve to only be a b-side :( I thought the days were long gone of great songs getting snubbed for average ones in terms of what goes on the album and what's releagated to b-side status. Don't get me started on Kylie Minogue's entire career in terms of this -_-

I know what you mean  Im still flabogasted that The Saturdays only put tracks like Flashback and Golden Rules as B-Sides yet the likes of Deeper, Why Me Why Now and Denial have reached album tracks status.

So I'll Say Goodbye doesnt sound like something i'd be horrified at the prospect of it being left as a B-Side but it did sound like a decent album track.

Yeah I thought I might be going too far with brining them into discussion  At least I ended my post with brining us back to the Pipettes :P ?

Anybody know what's happened to the release of this album? I had it pre-ordered and it's been cancelled, and any trace of it on HMV/Amazon and Play has vanished

Moving it back, or cancelled?
