Posted February 14, 201015 yr I can't say I'm a huge movie connoisseur, however, I do watch them all the time and love them immensely. So, I decided to make a list. YAY LISTS. My 25 favorite movies. These are the 25 movies that mean the most of me / have the most emotional resonance with me, not cultural significance or whatever. Or just ones that I've good timezzz with. Aw yea. 25. Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_koQXMNc8YpA/SYQvBhdZjKI/AAAAAAAAAOk/H5wLxdFu7x0/s400/Portada%20-%20Dr.%20Strangelove%20Or%20How%20I%20Learned%20To%20Stop%20Worrying%20And%20Love%20The%20Bomb.jpg 1964 Stanley Kubrick I never really connected with my dad much on movies while I knew him, however, this was one of the few. I first watched it when I was an early teenager (also around the time Bush was re-elected / other political crap), and I was pretty much trying to convince myself I was super politically knowledgeable and ~rebellious~ and such. Either way, this film hits the nail on the head pretty hard in terms of politics, specifically in the early 60's. It's incredible how much this movie still fits in with today's society. Dark and deeply satirical, it's a hard one to love if it's not your niche. It isn't really mine, to be honest, but I love this film. 1gXY3kuDvSU 24. Almost Famous http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wlB5F8xsNwY/Sz8qoFkLtXI/AAAAAAAABAA/Hc44T0X4Tlw/s400/almost_famous.jpg 2000 Cameron Crowe I was an aspiring musical journalist, age 15. I had just discovered the magical world of Pitchfork / blogs / etcetc and thought I could write decently (I can't). Those dreams are definitely gone now, but this movie still holds a special place in my heart as a friend recommended it to me when I told her I was considering studying music journalism (considering the basis of the film is following a 15 year old music journalist, William Miller, and his adventures). I don't like it for that reason; it's more of just a fun, offbeat movie about music that's super hilarious and fun. A great watch with college friends with great taste in music / movies / etcetc. It's just a super solid indie film that can be touching and hilarious at the same time. qk0XnyrENrE 23. The Wackness http://images.teamsugar.com/files/upl1/1/13839/16_2008/wackness-for-web.jpg 2008 Jonathan Levine God if there was an underrated film, it would be this one. I'm not sure why it's not hailed as an indie classic tbh. Maybe it's the fact that it starts Josh Peck, I dunno. Either way, it's about a teenage drug dealer (marijuana) in New York in the early 90's, and it's a wonderful reflection upon that decade, the US / New York, and youth culture in general. It's just a super solid plot with a lot of great moments / great acting (Ben Kingsley is specifically good). I saw it before I even started smoking weed and loved it so hey, and it's not really even about drugs in the first place (though Rudy Guliani + the war on drugs plays a big part). It's a very nice coming of age type of flick, which is a genre that features pretty heavily on this list LOL. How artsy of me. "My life sucks." "Has this got something to do with Kurt Cobain?" February 14, 201015 yr I'll follow this thread. I've only seen Almost Famous of that bunch but it's a great film. Funny and touching, and a good vehicle for Kate Hudson who sometimes picks proper shitties.
February 14, 201015 yr i was planning on doing something like this but i just dont have the time. havent heard of 'The Wackness' before may check it out.
February 14, 201015 yr Just changed the title Ben so that its clear to people that its your top 25 films of all time. Hope you dont mind! On the list, i dont think ive seen any of them yet but Almost Famous rings a bell...
February 14, 201015 yr Oh I love 'Almost Famous', and I've only seen bits an pieces of 'The Wackness'... but from what I've seen,I approve. Hoping Twilight misses the top 10!
February 14, 201015 yr Hoping Twilight misses the top 10! You will be disappointed Tyler... I have EXCLUSIVE word from Ben that its his #1 :(
February 14, 201015 yr Author Yes, Twilight is still to come everyone. :) Don't worry. And I added trailers. Yay. Almost Famous is amazing. <3 Kate Hudson is gooood in it. 22. 28 Days Later http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_T3lzrzH2fMo/SJtPDD9ZqTI/AAAAAAAABz8/aP51oVdUfDM/s400/twenty_eight_days_later.jpg 2002 Danny Boyle I was debating between whether I should have this on my list or Shaun of the Dead. Zombie movies are literally the best, just an amazeee genre. There's something very appealing about a movie following what could possibly be the remaining few humans left on Earth. Tis deliciously gory and scary (though not really tbh, I've grown not to get legit freaked out by movies) and has an incredibly solid plot. Plus the directing is incredible. Danny Boyle would later win awards for the more Oscar friendly Slumdog Millionaire, but this is easily his best imo. sBZnuUZIbBQ 21. A Single Man http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MEvj79wiUOg/Sz6pDRyYl2I/AAAAAAAAFnE/FIR56L_Av7o/s400/a-single-man-poster.jpg 2009 Tom Ford This is the most recent film to make the list, and one of two 2009 films to do so. It's an incredibly beautiful and moving film. It starts Colin Firth as George, a middle-age gay college professor who is grieving after the loss of his life partner. It follows him on the day that he plans to commit suicide, as he meets up with various people (some who present romantic opportunities), that ultimately do not follow through. It deals with him coming to terms with his loss and the nature of fate. Beautiful. Colin Firth should win the Oscar. He won't, but he should. Nicholas Hoult (Skins) and Julianne Moore were especially fabulous as well. aypyJtHzC70 20. A Clockwork Orange http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oCdMwP93SeA/SawqRt2yuOI/AAAAAAAAASU/qtcEUt3KYb8/s400/a-clockwork-orange.jpg 1972 Stanley Kubrick The second Stanley Kubrick film on this list (and last), and it's one most people generally know about, though not a lot of people have seen (unless they see it for a literature class). I saw it on my own accord, though I was reading the novel for a class, and it's a stunning piece of cinema, especially for its time. It's quite philosophical ultimately and presents the question of what is good and what is bad, and the nature of how we as humans deal with that concept. Alex, the main character, is forced to go through with therapy that causes him to literally feel ill every time he thinks of committing violence. But should he not be making this choice morally himself instead of others enforcing it upon him? Alex now literally cannot make a choice between good and evil, which practically makes him inhuman (hence, 'a clockwork orange'). Does that make the people who put him through therapy even worse than he was? Deep $h!t, basically. Also, the Bad Romance video was super inspired by this movie, so you Lady Gaga stans owe yourself a watch. 5n2NXuQ5ako
February 14, 201015 yr Author woo zombiessss. 19. Wendy and Lucy http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dUuxsPQ_nno/SXfGCR8GCjI/AAAAAAAABnE/fQVH6bGPYYI/s400/wendy%20and%20lucy.jpg 2008 Kelly Reichardt This movie is raw. There is not a single song played throughout the entire thing. Michelle Williams is pretty much the only actress in the entire film. The only thing with as close to as much screen time as her is her dog, Lucy. Wendy is trying to get to Alaska with her dog to make a better life for herself, as she is nearly poor. Tragedies ensue. It's literally one of the most heartbreaking and excruciating movies ever, emotionally. But it's very cathartic ultimately, and it is ultimately a tale of loss and letting go. So good. 7QXEK64ba08 18. The Descent http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cudK8MwW64I/STecIYQWs_I/AAAAAAAAIoE/bYo6XpcaNXg/s400/user-4802644_1164158428.jpg 2005 Neil Marshall If you're a fan of horror, and you haven't seen this movie, you are dead to me. I'm not big on the genre to be honest, but this is one hell of a fun movie with a lot of deeper symbolism and merit. It's the perfect blend of legit horror and grotesque fun. Major loff. l5I1q4KhKNU 17. Brick http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/brick-charity-auction.jpg 2006 Rian Johnson Brick is incredible. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt in (what I think) was his breakout role. This is a couple of years before 500 Days of Summer. And it's intense. It's pretty much a murder mystery at it's core, but it's done so artistically and incredibly well. It pretty much features a cast of only teenagers and the dialogue is written as if it was a 1950's film noir. So brilliant. The lack of adults makes this playout like a teenager's detective fantasy gone wild. And it's a good mystery, at that. A must watch. 3cVzHeJ0Z3I
February 14, 201015 yr not seen any of these yet :( and my art teacher keeps banging on at us to watch clockwork orange cos it's such an artsy film but i never get around to it. i've seen the eye scene on youtube but it just reminds me of that scene from un chien andalou by dali so it puts me off.
February 15, 201015 yr I can remember watching Clockwork Orange a few years ago. Found it intrueging, but quite eery at the time. I prefer the book though..
February 15, 201015 yr OMG OMG OMG. The Descent is one of my FAVORITE horror movies, it's brilliant. I also love you for having "A Single Man" on here. Such an awesome movie.
February 15, 201015 yr OMG OMG OMG. The Descent is one of my FAVORITE horror movies, it's brilliant. I also love you for having "A Single Man" on here. Such an awesome movie. This. Although the sequel sucks arse. I'll also say Martyrs (bar Let the Right One In) is probably the best and most unpredictable horror flick I've ever seen, with a deeper meaning behind it and I urge you to check it out or at least watch the trailer on youtube. Also if you liked The Descent and 28 Days Latter you should like [REC] which is also really, really scary. Great list so far Edited February 15, 201015 yr by Daniel Gleek
February 15, 201015 yr There's a sequel? I might have to check it out just to see what happens. :o Yeah it was released here in December but it was panned by the critics and only managed #9 in the movie chart but it did pretty well in France making around $2 million. There are a few scares and the second half is much stronger than the first half but the movie is both unnecessary and pretty bad. The director and writer of the first movie didn't come back (but remained as an executive producer) and an editor from the first one took over the reigns with new people writing the script, but Shauna MacDonald returns as Sarah. The plot is very Aliens and continues two days after the events of the first film. I think it's being released straight to DVD in America on the 27th April but you should be able to find it on the internet pretty easily. Edited February 15, 201015 yr by Daniel Gleek
February 15, 201015 yr and definitely watch [rec] rather than quarantine which is one of the worst remakes i've ever seen. even though it basically just copies it scene by scene it's nowhere near as scary. there's just something about having to read subtitles in a horror film that makes it 10x more scary and mysterious. plus [rec]'s trailer is so much better than quarantine's who just literally give the end away in theirs!
