Gavin Ryan Chart Commentary

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Iyaz and his track “Replay” (DL: 1 hold) do just that at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart this week, as he holds for a second week at No.1. I forgot to mention last week, that Iyaz is the first artist from the British Virgin Islands to top our charts, and also the first from that country to chart on ARIA (1988-2009). Owl City and their former number one “Fireflies” (DL: 2 hold) is staying still at No.2, whilst Ke$ha changes her status around within the Top 5. Last week’s held-at-4 track “Blah, Blah, Blah” (DL: 4 hold) moves up to a new peak of No.3, whilst her former No.1 “Tik Tok” (DL: 5 to 6, Phys: 2 to 3) holds at No.5. In between Ke$ha is David Guetta and Kid Cudi and the track “Memories” (DL: 7 to 3), which jumps up five places to No.4, just ahead of David featuring in the ‘Future Music Festival’ which will see him touring the country from the end of February.

Talking of tours, Taylor Swift is currently blitzing the country with her national tour, and she debuts at No.6 this week with “Today Was a Fairytale” (DL: 5 debut), taken not from her current No.3 album “Fearless”, but from the newly opened film ‘Valentine’s Day’, the soundtrack of which enters at No.94 . The song recently debuted at No.2 in the US and No.1 in Canada, and thanks to her tour, her other currently charting singles all climb back up the charts. “You Belong With Me” is up twelve places to No.43, former No.1 “Love Story” climbs nineteen spots to No.46, and her last charting track “Fifteen” (Phys: 16 to 20) is back up twenty-three places to No.77.

Along with Ke$ha and David Guetta, Jay Sean feat Sean Paul with the track “Do You Remember?” (DL: 11 to 9) is the third new peak within the Top 10, as the track climbs three places to No.7. The act with the new No.1 album Mumford & Sons see their track “Little Lion Man” (DL: 3 to 7) fall from it’s peak of No.3 to No.8 this week, and holding within the Top 10 for one more week are Jason DeRulo and “Whatcha Say” (DL: 6 to 8) at No.9 and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys on “Empire State of Mind” (DL: 8 to 10) fall two places to No.10.

NEW PEAKS: Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” (DL: 21 to 17) is the only new peak within the Top 20 section of the chart, she and he climb six places to No.17. Richard Vission climbs up to No.23 with “I Like That” (DL: 33 to 26), and Justin Bieber breaks out of No.30 to climb up to No.27 with “One Time” (DL: 31 to 27), and his debut from last week “Baby” (DL: 37 to 35) is up to No.36, whilst he has a third track debuting at No.91, “One Less Lonely Girl”. The only other new peak within the Top 50 is Cascada and their latest track “Fever” which climbs up to No.48.

British trio The Midnight Beast have been charting on the digital charts the past few weeks with their parody of the Ke$ha track “Tik Tok” (DL: 20 to 15), which this week enters the Top 100 at No.16. The group is made up of three guys, Dru, Ashley and StEfan and the ‘E’ is the British pound symbol as opposed to Ke$ha’s ‘$’ symbol in her name. This is the highest placed position for this song anywhere in the world, having reached the Top 100 in the UK and No.39 in the Irish charts.

In 2008, Gabriella Cilmi debuted at No.13 with her debut track “Sweet About Me” and four weeks later it went to No.1 in this country, eventually accumulating five weeks at No.1. This week she debuts with her third chart entry, “On a Mission” (DL: 18 debut) at No.19, the first taste from her second album “Ten” which is due March 22nd.

Former Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole makes her ARIA Chart debut at No.25 with her second single “3 Words” (DL: 24 debut), featuring guest vocals by Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am. Cheryl is returning the favor to Will, as she was guest vocalist on his track “Heartbreaker” (2008, didn’t chart in Australia). Cheryl is also the current female judge on the UK TV show X Factor, and the track “3 Words” recently peaked at No.4 in the UK, No.7 in Ireland and Italy, and is taken from the album of the same name. This track lands right between Girls Alouds’ two biggest charting singles, “Jump” which reached No.23 in February 2004 and “Biology” which peaked at No.26 in February 2006. So now that she lands again on the charts in February, she might go higher than her bands previous efforts.

From the 13th of July, 2009 for seven weeks TV Rock feat Rudy were at No.1 on the ARIA Club Tracks chart with the song “In the Air” (DL: 38 debut), eventually becoming the No.4 Club Track for 2009. Thanks in part to the new TV ads for the third series of So You Think You Can Dance airing at the moment, the track enters the Top 100 this week at No.37, giving TV Rock their fourth chart entry, and first since March 2007’s “The Others” (HP-10) with The Dukes of Windsor.

BELOW Top 50:

New peaking tracks below the Top 50 this week include Florence + The Machine and their version of “You’ve Got the Love”, now up to No.52. Future tourist John Mayer is up to a new peak of No.57 with “Heartbreak Warfare”. Up ten places to No.61 is k-os and their track “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman (Can’t Really Make You Love Me)”. And mention must go once again to Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance” which is now the second longest charting single on the ARIA Charts, notching up its 77th week in the Top 100.

Pitbull debuts at No.56 with “Shut it Down”, featuring guest vocals from Akon, it’s his fourth charting single, and he currently has three of those songs inside the Top 100. Two more SYTYCD entries occur, due to them being used in the show. “Showdown” by The Black Eyed Peas comes in at No.66, and will be their next single, and was used in the choreography trials in the first week of the shows, and “Imma Be” by The Black Eyes Peas was also used (although not as much), re-enters the Top 100 at No.75, one place lower than the No.74 it originally debuted at in June of 2009.

Canadian actor and rapper Aubrey Drake Graham played the character of Jimmy Brooks in the TV show ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation’, and as the rapper Drake he enters the ARIA Top 100 at No.99 with his first single here “Forever”. He is signed to Lil’ Wayne’s record label Young Money, and Wayne along with Kanye West and Eminem guest appear on this track.

KissChasy score their seventh Top 100 chart entry by debuting at No.100 with “Dinosaur”, the second track to chart from their third album “Seizures”. First single “Generation Why” hit No.72 in August of 2009, whilst the follow-up “Turnaround” from September failed to chart.

Thanks in part to their recent tour here, helped along by the No.1 placing on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2009 of “Little Lion Man”, and new single “The Cave”, Mumford & Sons score the first new No.1 album of the decade on the ARIA Albums chart with “Sigh No More”, now the highest placing anywhere in the world.

“Sigh No More” is the 606th No.1 in Australia (1965-2010), and it’s the first time that the word ‘sigh’ has appeared in a No.1 album title, and only the second time ‘more’ has hit No.1, the other being Rod Stewart’s 1979 album “Blondes Have More Fun”. Mumford & Sons are the 58th English act to hit the top of the album charts, with the 122nd English performed album. “Sigh No More” is the 290th album to hit No.1 by a group, and they are the 31st English Group to hit the top, the last of which was Muse in September last year with “The Resistance” (No.6 this week).

With Susan Boyle falling to No.2 with “I Dreamed a Dream”, she is just ahead of current tourist Taylor Swift who climbs four places to No.3 with “Fearless”, plus she re-enters at No.59 with her self-titled debut album, a new peak for this album. With Taylor jumping up, it in turn pushes down Lady GaGa’s “The Fame Monster” to No.4, “Crazy Love” by Michael Buble to No.5 and Ke$ha’s “Animal” down to No.7. Holding on to the end of the Top 10 are The Black Eyed Peas who hold at No.9 with “The E.N.D.” and down two places to No.10 are The McClymonts and “Wrapped Up Good”.

The fifth studio album by British group Massive Attack (their first in seven years) is the highest new entry of the week, “Heligoland” debuts at No.8. It becomes their third Top 10 album, their previous two Top 10 albums being “100th Window” (HP-4, Feb 2003) and “Mezzanine” (HP-1, May 1998). Their last charting album was the 2006 best of “Collected” which hit No.19 here.

Perth group Birds of Tokyo hit No.3 in July 2008 with their second album “Universes”. This week they debut at No.11 with “The Broken Strings Tour”, an album of live tracks from their acoustic tour from last year.

Rob Thomas announced he is playing shows here soon, which helps his current album ‘cradlesong’ to climb up eleven places to No.17. AC/DC are touring the country, their first in almost ten years, and this has helped their recent ARIA Award winning album “Black Ice” to climb back up thirty-one places to No.23 this week. Their recent collection “Backtracks” is up twenty places to No.61, their first No.1 album “Back in Black” re-enters at No.79, and their 90’s live set “Live” is back in at No.89. Another touring act also enter this week, Gloriana, who won the Best New Artist at the recent Grammy’s are here as Taylor Swift’s support act, and their self-titled album enters at No.43 this week.

Other new entries to the Top 100 this week are Nick Jonas & The Administration at No.46 with “Who I Am”. Lil’ Wayne is in at No.51 with “Rebirth”, and Jay Sean enters ar No.67 with “All or Nothing”. k.d. Lang’s first best of “Recollection” debuts at No.56, Yeasayer enter at No.66 with “Odd Blood”, Celtic Woman are in at No.77 with “Songs From the Heart”, and finally another touring act enter at No.86, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and their new set “Spirit of the Glen-Tattoo”.

ouch Cilmi, not good for her home comeback...

I'm sure it will climb over the coming weeks. Most singles these days enter low and climb up the ARIA charts. Those that enter high tend to tail off a lot quicker. I'm sure 'On A Mission' was no. 3 in Australia's iTunes chart last time I had a look.

Gabriella is #10 on iTunes, so expect the song to climb next week
