February 18, 201015 yr do a band 'save' rock every year then? and are The Vines back this year then? :o
February 18, 201015 yr do a band 'save' rock every year then? I think Rock/Metal, if anything, needs saving from the fukkin' music press who print crap like "<insert flavour of the month band>: The Saviours of Rock".....
February 21, 201015 yr Rock doesn't need saving. It's doing perfectly fine as it is. Hip Hop really needs saving though. There's been nothing good do well for years
February 24, 201015 yr Hip Hop really needs saving though. There's been nothing good do well for years Absolutely... The days of Public Enemy, NWA, Wu Tang, Method Man, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Red Man, Ice-T, etc seem to be WAY behind the genre, and really nothing of that kind of snarling, uncompromising, radical nature has really come to replace it... I mean, sorry, but Kanye?? Eminem?? Snoop??? P-Diddy?? They're not fit to wipe Flavor Flav's or Chuck D's arse frankly.....
February 24, 201015 yr there are some ace hip hop artists about, just not that mainstream, check out Saul Williams and P.O.S, Lupe Fiasco is pretty good aswell tbh. and I do also think Eminem and Jay-Z are good but they dont exactly move the genre forward too much if you compare to NWA, Public Enemy etc, well they did move the genre a bit, but in the wrong direction, they made good music themseleves but what they spawned (50 Cent etc) are terrible.

I honestly tried listening to a Jay-Z album once, and frankly I had to just turn it off because I was laughing so much... for the wrong reasons... I laughed with Flav, I laughed at Jay-Z and Kanye, therein lies the difference... As for 50 Cent, if brains were dynamite that guy wouldn't have enough to blow his nose... I dont think I've heard such unintelligent, inarticulate rubbish in all my life... Rap always was supposed to be about having something to say and saying it in a clever and unique way, in other words being a Wordsmith, an Orator, the very best Rappers can tell a compelling story, they're "Street Poets"... 50 Cent and his ilk have nothing to say to me..... I mean, just look at these words from Michael Franti (Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy) If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics I would tell you that sometimes its easier to desire and pursue the attention and admiration of 100 strangers than it is to accept the love and loyalty of those closest to me And I would tell you that sometimes I prefer to look at myself through someone elses eyes Eyes that arent clouded with the tears of knowing what an asshole I can be, as yours are. If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics I might be able to listen in silence to your concerns rather than hearing everything as an accusation or an indictment against me I would tell you that sometimes I use sex to avoid communication its the best escape when were down on our luck But I can express more emotions than laughter, anger, and lets f*** If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics I would tell you that I pooped in my own dog dish And sometimes I would rather face not eating than face licking it clean And admitting when Im selfish And Id tell you that Im suffering from the worst type of loneliness The loneliness of being misunderstood, or more poignantly the loneliness of being afraid to allow myself to be understood If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics I would tell you that the personal revolution is far more difficult and is the first step in any revolution If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics I would tell you that music is the expression of emotion And that politics is merely the decoy of perception. If 50 Cent or Eminem could ever write something half this elegant, I'll eat my hat.....

If 50 Cent or Eminem could ever write something half this elegant, I'll eat my hat..... I said 50 cent was terrible... however I dont think Jay-Z and defintatly not Eminem are terrible (well maybe Eminem is currently). i'm not denying that they couldnt write something that 'elegant' but i dont think they are 'terrible'. anyway as I previously mentioned, it's all about Saul Williams these days, who can write stuff that elegant imo, and im sure you have heard him seeing as Trent Reznor produced an album of his, and also Zack de la Rocha has been on one of his tracks before.
February 24, 201015 yr The Coup are another good hip hop act aswell (featuring Boots Riley, also a bandmate of Tom Morello's in Street Sweeper Social Club). put your mind to it and there are plently of good hip hop acts these days, just not nessarcialy mainstream. Saul Williams, P.O.S, The Coup, Lupe Fiasco.
February 24, 201015 yr however I dont think Jay-Z and defintatly not Eminem are terrible (well maybe Eminem is currently). i'm not denying that they couldnt write something that 'elegant' but i dont think they are 'terrible'. Eminem started out by being pretty clever and mischievous to be fair, the "Slim Shady LP" definitely had its moments of amusement when he was clearly just taking the p!ss and hitting some of the right targets, but then, something just went seriously wrong somewhere...
February 24, 201015 yr put your mind to it and there are plently of good hip hop acts these days, just not nessarcialy mainstream. That's the whole problem though mate... They're NOT breaking through and becoming "household" names the way Public Enemy, NWA, Ice-T, etc did.... These guys were fukkin' HUGE, they were selling millions of records, getting their messages across to the masses and changing peoples' perceptions... I would go so far as to say that it was thanks to the likes of Chuck D, Ice T, Ice Cube, etc breaking through to the mainstream and getting across the Black Americanpoint of view to the white teenagers in the 80s and 90s (who then became voters), that it actually eventually paved the way for Barack Obama to become President.... Think about it...
February 24, 201015 yr Eminem started out by being pretty clever and mischievous to be fair, the "Slim Shady LP" definitely had its moments of amusement when he was clearly just taking the p!ss and hitting some of the right targets, but then, something just went seriously wrong somewhere... 'Stan' was his masterpiece but he kinda lost it after 'Lose Yourself' and his only listenable songs since have been 'Like Toy Soldiers' and 'We Made You'. He needs to come back with something radical and interesting, the whole genre needs him. In terms of rock, are we looking for a Kings of Leon/Kasabian figure (existing band suddenly explode) or an Oasis who come out of nowhere? I can't see the latter happening any time soon, not given the standard of the 'exciting new bands' in NME, so who could come out of the ranks? Americans like Paramore and 30 Seconds To Mars are moving up pretty fast (playing arenas now) but not on the same level as the two bands I mentioned, while the only new British band of the last couple of years that I've found worth listening to are White Lies. Not exactly encouraging :|
February 24, 201015 yr while the only new British band of the last couple of years that I've found worth listening to are White Lies. Not exactly encouraging :| Paramore are awful... God help us if they're considered the "Saviours".... White Lies are a good band, but I think The Horrors are much better... Their second album "Primary Colours" is a future "Indie Rock" classic IMO, and it just totally came out of nowhere last year, you'd've never credited that band coming up with something that sounded that radical had you heard their debut album "Strange House".... I think what's very much needed is a new, younger Morrissey, Jarvis or Robert Smith tbh... Faris Rotter is trying, but not really there yet.... I am impressed by Editors' vocalist Tom Smith, he's becoming far more intense in his live persona and presence from what I saw of their footage of the Fabric gig on YouTube, like a cross between Ian Curtis and Micheal Stipe...

He just became unfunny..
February 24, 201015 yr Can not listen to Eminem any more. His voice is just so tired and old at this stage.
February 25, 201015 yr Eminem has probably left drugs behind -> worse music and lyrics.. His first two albums and Lose Yourself were amazing. Regarding rap or hip hop as a genre, I believe Dr. Dre and OutKast have lot to offer - IF they release something someday. Don't know about rock though..There are not many great new bands or personalities with talent at the moment. I believe Glasvegas and White Lies are able to release some groundbreaking stuff in the future. I'm interested in hearing new My Chemical Romance too..they have fans, talent, and the vision to create something new. Edited February 25, 201015 yr by SKOB

I'm really annoyed that 'Stylo' by Gorillaz is flopping because from early reviews 'Plastic Beach' is a masterpiece and could have been huge on a 'Demon Days' level. MCR have the potential to be big again, apparently this record is more 'punk' , ie. less overblown than The Black Parade, but if they can drum up a single half as epic as 'Welcome To The Black Parade' then they're guaranteed success. Thinking that Limp Bizkit's comeback will most probably flop (yet I'm still fascinated to hear it), Linkin Park have more crossover potential yet again, and Blink-182 are a wildcard for this year.
February 26, 201015 yr Author do a band 'save' rock every year then? and are The Vines back this year then? :o Vines have a new LP out in a few mths. yay im still a big fan!
February 27, 201015 yr White Lies didn't impress me at all. As weak as Editors were they were still better than White Lies. Hope Glasvegas can come back with something great.
