I wondered how they came upon so many people making fools of themselves in the promotional adverts.

Darius Campbell is a walking miracle despite breaking his neck just three weeks ago in a horrific car crash while on holiday in Spain.

The Scottish singer, who revealed in January that he'd changed his name from Danesh to his mother's maiden name, was a passenger in a Porsche when it hit a diesel spill at 70mph, skidded out of control and smashed into a wall.

The singer, who won Popstar To Operastar in January this year, and his two friends walked away from the wreck, but Darius collapsed moments afterwards.

Lucky escape: Darius Danesh was spotted in Los Angeles with girlfriend Natasha Henstridge at his side.

He told the Daily Record: 'It was absolutely terrifying. I thought that was going to be it. My life flashed before my eyes and I thought I was going to die.'

'The last thing I remember was being thrown forwards. Before I knew it, I had got out of the car, but I hit the ground and I couldn't feel my arms and my legs.'

He was rushed to the Hospital Costa Del Sol, where doctors revealed that he had broken the third verterbrae in his neck and the break was mere millmetres from paralysing him for life.

However, the singer is not out of the woods yet. Doctors hope the verterbrae heals on its own, but he may need risky surgery which could damage his vocal chords and finish his career.

He's currently recuperating in Los Angeles, where he was spotted with girlfriend Natasha Henstridge by his side.

Darius had been with the Canadian actress for five years and the pair had got engaged, but split in February. However, as Mail Online revealed at the time, they reunited in June after five months apart.

The Glasgow-born star, 29, became a household name as Darius Danesh through stints on reality shows Popstars in 2001 and then a year later in Pop Idol.

Striding out: Despite almost being paralysed for life in the horrific car smash the singer is now merely walking wounded

He went on to become a West End leading man, playing the likes of Billy Flynn in Chicago and Rhett Butler in Sir Trevor Nunn’s theatrical adaptation of Gone with the Wind.

His next project is starring in a travelling musical production called The History Of The Big Bands which he's also produced himself.

It's due to kick off on September 11 in St Albans and the star is determined to take the stage, neck brace or not.

The show tells the story of the big band and swing era and features the music of jazz legends including Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Buddy Rich.

As for the name change, Darius explained a the time that his real name was always Darius Danesh-Campbell, but he'd decided to ditch the family surname he inherited from his Iranian doctor dad, Booth, after an emotional visit with his granddad Colin Campbell in a nursing home.

He elaborated: 'I've reached a stage in my life where I ask, "Who am I?" "Before Christmas, I visited my grandad. He said to me, "I am proud of you. No matter where you are in the world, you'll always be a Campbell. You'll always be a Scot and you'll always be my grandson."

'When I travel the world, I feel so deeply Scottish. When people know me as Darius Danesh, it doesn't reflect that I am Scottish. People say it's not a very Scottish name. But Darius Campbell reflects that I am Scottish.'

Darius also dismissed the notion of a family feud over the name change - and said his dad was also considering changing his name to Campbell too as he feels like an adopted Scot, having lived there for 30 years.

I wonder if it was his own decision to ditch the firm brace for the softer collar for his performances at Glasgow

and London. If so he was taking a massive risk, especially leaping off the stage at Glasgow.

For his own sake I hope he will continue to wear the firm brace, if not he is a damn fool.

Or have they found the injury to be worse than first thought.

When you damage your neck, your head is just too heavy for you to support. A soft brace helps but doesn't give anywhere near enough support. I think he's mad not wearing a stiff collar until the vertebrae are healed enough. Not wanting to worry people is not a good enough reason not to. I think it worried most peoplr here more that he didn't wear one.

that brace looks awful, so uncomfortable, think i would have been more shocked if i had seen him in tath. is the picture recent, or was he wearing that bracein the time following the accident and has since moved onto a soft one..if not it does make me worry about him wearing the soft brace and jumping off that stage. i keep praying it has bee getting better on its own

Do hope it's not the latter. Sue

DARIUS Campbell has been spotted in Los Angeles this week showing the horrific effects of the recent high-speed car crash which left him with a broken neck.

The former Pop Idol wannabe was still wearing the neck brace he was seen in a fortnight ago after escaping with his life in the smash in Spain last month.

Darius, who changed his name from Danesh to Campbell to keep in line with his Scottish roots, told a newspaper he thought he was going to die when the Porsche he was in skidded out of control at 70pmh.

The 29-year-old explained: "It was absolutely terrifying, I thought that was going to be it."

After the smash, Darius managed to stagger out of the motor with his two pals but fell into a heap on the floor moments later.

He later found out he had broken the third vertebrae in his neck.

If the break was a few millimetres away he was told he'd have been paralysed him for life.

The Scots Pop Star To Opera Star champ headed home to Glasgow to recover shortly after the crash but now recuperating in LA with his girlfriend Natasha Henstridge.

It was feared he may need a risky operation to mend the broken bone that could have had an effect on his vocals chords and put an end to his singing career.

But he has found out the operation isn't necessary and he only needs to undergo physiotherapy for the present.

At least we know that Darius doesn't need to go for the op now

I'm so glad he is wearing a neck brace that doesn't worry me everytime he moves. Lol.

With the soft one, i just wanted him to keep his head still and not move it about so much.

Great news about the operation, that must be a weight off his mind and i hope he continues to rest (as much as Darius can. Lol) that will help speed up his recovery :-)

Great news (if we can believe The Sun), lets hope he has the sense to take things steady. Sue
