There have been rumours circulating the internet about Rihanna planning to release a brand new album in summer 2010.

Neon Limelight quotes

"Rihanna has promised her next album will have a lighter sound than what fans heard on her fourth album, Rated R, and turns out, we won’t have to wait very long to hear it. While the source at Def Jam tells Ikon the quick push to release a new album is because “Ri wants to get across that she’s moved on from the dark period she was in when recording the ‘Rated R’ songs,” our source says that’s only part of the reason. The label is said to be unhappy with Rated R’s current performance. The album has been certified platinum in the United States and has had two top 10 singles with another, the snappy island-flavored “Rude Boy,” moving up the charts quickly, but it appears it hasn't yet lived up to the label's big projections or massive investments.

Our source says “Rude Boy” will likely be Rated R’s final single with the new album and tour taking priority after promotion ends. As for the new album, fans should expect more “dance” songs in the same vein of Good Girl Gone Bad’s smash “Don’t Stop The Music."

I personally would love her to release a new album this summer and move back to her dance-pop roots. I loved Rated R but a crossover of Dont Stop The Music and Disturbia is the best piece of music Rihanna makes and is what she is known for :) and judging by the performance of "Rude Boy" so far it shows that it's what people are craving for. But then again Rated R still has plenty of potential to sell big so either way for me is fine :P

Any thoughts?

Wow, Rated R is clearly more of a grower of an album, not something that was ever going to instantly smash. I think giving up after 'Rude Boy' would be silly, especially when there's still tons of potential off the album. Hell, she's getting 3 Top 10 hits off this album and they want to give up on it? This doesn't happen too often these days unless your the BEPs!
I hope this isnt true and im sorry but what a stupid article, it makes her and her management sound spoiled, what do they mean the album hasnt done well? its going to pass 700k in the US in the next week or two and its sales are pretty stable, thats pretty good especially nowadays when albums sales are sh*t (Rated R could have just as easily hit #4 then fell to #50 and never recovered), Russian Roulette and Hard both went top 10, the latter has gone platinum, and Rude Boy is #4 on itunes and no doubt will probably be her third top 10 and possibly be another million seller...what exactly is dissapointing about that? One more single would probably push the album over 1 million copies sold. Sorry its just annoying reading that when there are so many artists that would kill to be in her shoes right now.

Exactly!

I mean, look at Leona Lewis who's done NOTHING in the US with her second album, yet Rihanna is consistently having hit after hit with songs that are perfect for radio (okay bar Russian Roulette, I'm sure the only reason that was successful was because it was Rihanna's comeback song, it would have done nothing as a 2nd/3rd single IMO). They really need to take a step back a bit and cut all this 'new album' nonsense. She still has at least 3 single-worthy hits on this album that are bound to chart in the Top 20 at the very least. A re-release is a much better move if she's wanting to move back to her dance/pop routes. Release 'Fire Bomb' and 'Rockstar101' and then re-release the album around September with a killer uptempo, followed by a mid-tempo to close the era.

I doubt this will happen, well I hope not anyway. Rated R has alot of potential and I have a feeling she'd just go back to the commercial sound of GGGB for this album. :( Much like Kelly did with All I Ever Wanted after My December wasn't a huge hit.

She should wait until at least next year imo!

I think she should atleast wait until NEXT Summer. Atleast release one more single off of 'Rated R'... take the second half of this year to get the new album in pristine condition and then go on to 2011.
