Gavin Ryan Chart Commentary

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Jason DeRulo’s No.1 debut from last week “In My Head” (DL:1 hold) holds for a second week at the top on the ARIA Singles Chart. But jumping up to challenge him is recent tourist to our shores Rihanna, and her latest single “Rude Boy” (DL: 7 to 4), which leaps six places to No.2 this week. It’s her highest placing in the charts since “Don’t Stop the Music” was at the top of the charts exactly two years ago (3-March-2008), although she did have two No.3 singles with “Take a Bow” (30-June-2008) and as guest vocalist in T.I.’s “Live Your Life” (Dec-2008).

With Rihanna jumping up so high, she pushes Iyaz down another peg to No.3 this week with his former chart-topping single “Replay” (DL:2 hold), and the other former No.1 in the Top 5, “Fireflies” (DL: 4 to 3) stays still at No.4. Also staying put are three other songs in the Top 10. The Midnight Beast are “Tik Tok”ing (DL: 6 hold) at No.5 again, and David Guetta and Akon keep their “Memories” (DL: 6 hold) at No.6, whilst holding on for a fourth week in the top ten is Jay Sean and “Do You Remember?” (DL: 9 hold)

Four former chart-topping women are bunched together with the other three songs in the Top 10. Taylor Swift falling down four places to No.7 with “Today Was a Fairytale” (DL: 3 to 7), Ke$ha also falls, down two places to No.9 with “Blah, Blah, Blah” (DL: 8 to 10, Phys:15 to 6 ), and jumping into the Top 10 for the first time at No.8 is Lady GaGa and Beyonce on their “Telephone” (DL: 16 to 8).

NEW PEAKS: Although it did debut last week at No.72, it is technically a new entry to the Top 50 this week. I’m talking about Train and their track “Hey, Soul Sister” (DL: 15 debut) which scores the biggest leap of the week by jumping up fifty-six places to No.16, easily beating the peak of their last charting single, June 2003’s “Calling All Angels” (HP-22). Richard Vission is up five places to No.20 with “I Like That” (DL: 26 to 24). Timbaland and Katy Perry scored the New Zealand No.1 last week “If We Ever Meet Again” (DL: 25 debut), which this week is up thirty-six places to No.26, and another of last weeks debuts, Alicia Keys and Beyonce on “Put it in a Love Song” (DL: 35 to 29) is up thirteen places to No.29. Pitbull’s fourth single “Shut it Down” (DL: 38 to 28) is up nine places to No.28, and Florence + The Machine climb fifteen places to No.35 with their version of “You Got the Love” (DL: 48 to 34).

Last June Dutch DJ Sidney Samson scored a No.10 single with the dance track “Riverside”. This week he scores the highest new entry of the week, debuting at No.48 with his new track “Let’s Go”, featuring guest vocals from Lady Bee and Bizzey. Also entering the Top 50 first week is Jay-Z with guest vocals from Mr.Hudson on the third single from his “Blueprint 3” album (up to No.58 this week) entitled “Young Forever”, featuring a sample of “Forever Young” originally done in 1985 by Alphaville and more recently by local act Youth Group who did a more slowed down version which went to No.1.

BELOW Top 50:

New peaking tracks below the Top 50 include Operator Please and their new single “Logic”, which jumps up fifteen places to No.58. Chris Brown is up a place with “Crawl” at No.66 as too is T-Pain who climbs a single place to No.81 with “Take Your Shirt Off”. Two re-entries to the Top 100 make new peaks, with The Black Eyed Peas coming back in at No.71 with “Imma Be” (their official new single now), and KissChasy are back at No.77 with “Dinosaur”.

Gossip have been touring around Australia recently, and last week they re-entered at No.99 with “Heavy Cross”, which is up to No.90 this week. But former No.50 single “Love Long Distance” is back in at No.57 this week, possibly helped by their So You Think You Can Dance performance from Thursday night. Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance” is down a place to No.96, but is in the charts for its 79th week, thus making it now the equal longest running ARIA Top 100 chart single, tying with Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack”. Maybe next week it’ll eclipse that, but we will all have to wait and see.

Evermore have a new greatest hits collection out in late March, and a new song to feature on that set debuts this week at No.70, entitled “Underground”. Alicia Keys’ down-tempo version of “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down” enters at No.75. And sneaking in at No.99 on early sales is “All to Myself” the third single off Guy Sebastian’s latest album “Like it Like That”.

Mumford and Sons hold for a third week with their “Sigh No More” album, but moving up one place and knocking on the door for a possible second No.1 in Australia is k.d. Lang’s “Recollection” set, which last week charged up the charts to No.3 and climbs one place this week to No.2. Which in turn pushes Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” to her lowest peak yet of No.3. Lady GaGa climbs back up three places to No.4 with her “The Fame Monster” collection, whilst Taylor Swift stays steady at No.5 again this week.

Last week’s big debut for Sade and her new album “Soldier of Love” is down two places to No.6, and now at it’s lowest EVER position of No.7 is Michael Buble and “Crazy Love”. Muse and “The Resistance” along with The Black Eyed Peas and “The E.N.D.” are both down a single place to No.9 and No.10 respectively. And the act that’s pushing them down has taken half-a-year since debuting to actually reach the top ten, Florence + The Machine, who are up four places to No.8 and their first week inside the Top 10.

Debuting at No.11 is “Before Too Long: Triple J’s tribute to Paul Kelly”, a collection of songs that were performed at the Forum Theatre in Melbourne on November 13th and 14th of 2009. Acts included in the performance were Missy Higgins, John Butler, Paul Dempsey, Bob Evans and Katy Steele (Little Birdy).

Scoring a new peak (and up eight places) is Rihanna’s “Rated R” thanks to the new No.2 single “Rude Boy”. Also scoring a new peak is another recent tourist Cliff Richard and The Shadows, who climb up twenty-three places to No.40 with their “Reunited” collection. Also current tourist Whitney Houston climbs twenty-one places to No.34 with her 2000 best-of collection, and George Michael is up twenty-five places to No.24 with his newly repackaged tour-edition of “Twenty-Five”. And last week’s big tourists AC/DC score four albums within the Top 50 this week, as their 1980 album “Back in Black” is up thirteen places to No.44.

Two other debuts this week inside the Top 50 are from Eddy Current Suppression Ring and their album “Rush to Relax” which enters at No.20. And the sixth in Johnny Cash’s “American” series “Ain’t No Grave” debuts at No.22.

:yahoo: for Alicia, Florence and RiRi!

Unless Jason Mraz rush released a cover of In My Head the other week :kink:
