Posted March 2, 201015 yr From www.thebest100lists.com, voted for my members of the public who took the time to compile a top 10 list. While far from perfect (Tom Hanks #2? )I think it is definatly one of the more credible lists I've come accross, certainly better than the one Channel 4 did a while back where Arnie was ranked higher than Brando. So what does everyone think? Who is too high and are there any very obvious omissions from the list? You can view the entire top 100 here http://www.thebest100lists.com/best100actors/ 1. Robert De Niro 2. Tom Hanks 3. Marlon Brando 4. Al Pacino 5. Jack Nicholson 6. Johnny Depp 7. Meryl Streep 8. Denzel Washington 9. Dustin Hoffman 10. Leonardo DiCaprio 11. Morgan Freeman 12. James Stewart 13. Daniel Day Lewis 14. Anthony Hopkins 15. Russell Crowe 16. Sean Penn 17. Katharine Hepburn 18. Paul Newman 19. Humphrey Bogart 20. Edward Norton
March 2, 201015 yr Author I think it is pretty decent as a list overall - Tom Hanks has no place in the top 10 then, and although im a fan, either does Johnny Depp or Leo imo. Those three shoudl be replaced with Hopkins, along with two actors who have been criminally left out of the top 20 - Gene Hackman and Orsen Wells.

No Bob Mitchum, Lee Marvin, Glenn Ford, Ralph Richardson ... the list of missing names goes on and on! Agreed that times move on and that new actors must join the frame (and I totally disagree ... Tom Hanks is very deserving a top ten place ... despite the godawful Forest Gump) but come on. How the hell can this be taken seriously when we have Marilyn Monroe placed seven places higher than the magnificent George C Scott (Patton was one of the best performances in film history). Monroe shouldn't even bloody well be in there. She was an icon certainly ... an actress? Never. Flippin' heck! Shirley MacLaine isn't even in there! Mind you ... it does say 'as voted for by regular people' ... so I think in the way we dismiss most publicly voted awards ... we can dismiss this one. Marlon Brando is about 90 places too high for me! Norma Edited March 2, 201015 yr by Norma_Snockers
March 2, 201015 yr Author I agree with you on those left out, especially Robert Mitchum - simply ridiculous. And looking at it more closley, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, John Travolta (as good as they are in certain roles) better than Gene Hackman, Spencer Tracey, Henry Fonda, Orson Wells and a load of others? However you can't seriously think Tom Hanks is a better actor than Brando? :o Surely that is like saying Oasis are better than The Beatles  Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Hanks, and would place him in my personal top 20, but he has nowhere near the range or versatility of Brando or alot of the actors below him. Granted Hanks is good at making his performances look pretty effortless, but he is not really the type of actor that is going to suprise you - I feel there is always a ceiling there with him, although his performances in 'Cast Away', Philadelphia', and 'Saving Private Ryan' were all great. Would you be more inclined to agree with the Channel 4 list? 1. Al Pacino 2. Robert De Niro 3. Tom Hanks 4. Kevin Spacey 5. Harrison Ford 6. Jack Nicholson 7. Anthony Hopkins 8. Sir Sean Connery 9. Ewan McGregor 10. Cary Grant 11. Samual L Jackson 12. James Stewart 13. Audrey Hepburn 14. Steve McQueen 15. Brad Pitt 16. Paul Newman 17. Mel Gibson  18. Clint Eastwood 19. Robin Williams 20. Sigourney Weaver Full list: http://admin.channel4.com/film/newsfeature...sults_15_11.jsp

Apart from the laughable Mel Gibson - who apart from Gallipoli hasn't done one decent film in his entire life. With regard to Brando ... I stand by my comment that I wouldn't include him in my own top 20/30/40 (I think suggesting 93 was perhaps a bit to cruel). I think he was vastly overrated and he was one of those people whose 'presence' was greater than his actual talent. I'm not really a fan of this 'method' acting stuff ... I tend to agree with Laurence Olivier when he said 'just act'. Another thing .... apart from one or two questionable roles in later life .... Rod Steiger isn't on the first list either (and before you say it ... I know he was part of the 'method' school). What kind of sh/t is that? I do think that the Channel 4 list has been done on actual 'acting' skills ... and not on 'being a movie star but there's no harm in being a half-way decent actor' skills. And my reasoning for this? John Wayne in the top 40? My Arse! Norma Edited March 3, 201015 yr by Norma_Snockers
March 5, 201015 yr 1) Johnny Depp “I don’t think he is sexy but the man can act! He is very diverse and agile. He can be so funny, elusive, mysterious, boyish, wise, psycho, happy , sad, grevious, etc. And I believe every moment of his characters.” 2) Marlon Brando “Humphrey Bogart: I came out here with one suit and everybody said I looked like a bum. Twenty years later Marlon Brando came out with only a sweatshirt and the town drooled over him.” 3) Tom Hanks “Nominated for 5 academy awards for playing a little kid in a man’s body, a troubled WWII captain, a modern Robinson Caruso and his two Oscar winning roles as a gay man and a mentally challenged overachiever. Hanks is extremely versatile and is brilliant in both comedic and dramatic roles.” 4) Al Pacino “An underspoken, under-rated actor. He is so very good at what he does. I love to watch him, almost like you can see his character’s thinking. He is very transparent and becomes the man he’s pretending to be on screen.” 5) Anthony Hopkins “He is absolutely magnificent in every role he plays. If the Oscars were awarded to the best acting performance of the year and not for a performance that is particularly excellent for a given actor, Hopkins would have won a dozen by now.” 6) Jack Nicholson “Hey did we forget Jack, "heres Johnny" let not forget the greatest actor ever!!!” “Simply put Jack is the man! One the most versatile (great as a psychopath, the best. see The shining, cookoos nest, The Departed). Who the hell are the crack heads that consider Jared Leto or Johnny Depp or even Brando better than Jack? Depp is a very versatile actor but I don’t consider him to be great at any of them. Leto? Requime for a dream he played a very good part but thats it really.. Brando, aside from The Godfather and maybe On the waterfront was all that great an actor (he was good in Apocalyps now but had to short a part)” 7) Russell Crowe “Makin movies makin song anf fightin round the woarld!” 8)Humphrey Bogart “Bogey’s natural talent and astounding presence on the screen is simply second to none, as yet. I’m an avid film enthusiast and critic, and I haven’t yet seen anyone equal bogey’s great performances. In my opinion he’s the greatest screen actor to date.” 9) Leonardo Di Caprio “Say what you want about his heart throb status and his presence in the teen magazines, he is still a spectacular actor. It’s not his fault that he became so wildly popular in the under 16 female demographic.” 10) Denzel Washington “Let’s not put Denzel in a catagory of best Black actor. He is a GREAT actor period.” “I believe that not only is Denzel Washington a good African American Actor, but rather he is a talented performer regardless. I think that most directors could pretty much assign him the responsibilities of any role that was not dependent on color to portray, whether that be from a movie script of stage play since he got his acting start on the dramatic theater stage performing in front of live audiences...and he would do as well a job as any other performer in successfully bringing the character to life enjoyably. He is very entertaining to watch due to his ability to become very animated and encompass each character he portrays.”
March 7, 201015 yr I agree, this list isn't half bad! But I think Tom Hanks is way too high, while Katherine Hepburn and Paul Newman should both be in the Top 5 IMO.
March 9, 201015 yr However you can't seriously think Tom Hanks is a better actor than Brando? :o Surely that is like saying Oasis are better than The Beatles  I prefer Oasis to The Beatles, as do a lot of the people who vote for these tthings which is why you often see Live Forever/Wonderwall/Don't Look Back In Anger at the top of public-voted song competitions where "A Day In The Life" (which is quite often The Beatles' highest entry) is floundering much lower.
March 14, 201015 yr Wow, the great Chaplin NOT in the first 50? WTF? Quite right ... can't stand the bloke! Blackadder was absolutely right in Blackadder Goes Forth! Norma
March 15, 201015 yr Hmmm, heavily weighted in favour of the English-speaking actors, which I think is frankly ridiculous.... ANY list of top 100 actors should really be featuring the following.. Takeshi Kitano Gerard DePardieu (I mean, COME ON FFS!!!!) Vincent Cassell Benicio Del Toro Carmen Maura Bruno Ganz (his astounding performance as Adolf Hitler in "Downfall" ALONE merits him a place surely...) Tony Leung Chiu Wai (the sheer breadth of the different films and roles he's been in marks him out as pretty much a Hong Kong version of Johnny Depp...) Ken Watanabe
