Top 100 Singles:

The top 100 is made up of hits from all sorts of genres and contains a whopping 94 personal number one hits, and 6 that should have been number ones looking back! As we can see from the following year-by-year breakdown, 2004 was clearly my most favoured year for music during the last decade, which I hadn't realised until compiling this

2000 - 7
2001 - 10
2002 - 7
2003 - 6
2004 - 18
2005 - 13
2006 - 9
2007 - 12
2008 - 10
2009 - 8

And the following countries/states/provinces are all represented at some stage in the countdown:

Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom & USA

(The number in brackets is the peak position on my chart and the date is when it entered my chart)

A right mixed bunch! Scraping in at 100 is the lovely ballad from S Club 7. One of the 10 oldest songs in the countdown, it was a huge hit with me when I was just 10 years old! Just ahead at 99 is a metal song by Dutch act, Delain. A recent hit, it has an infectious chorus and is one of the more impressive releases from a female fronted metal act. A one hit wonder on my chart, Motorcyle are at 98 with their impressive dance tune, As The Rush Comes. Just edging ahead of them is the quirky Airhead by Girls@Play - one of my favourite guilty pleasures.

Linkin Park are at 96 with the anthemic In The End and at 95 is the Icelandic Eurovision entry of 2005 from Selma. A very impressive pop ditty that completely failed at the contest, such a shame! Former UK Eurovision entrant Nicki French is at 94 with her fantastic cover of Celine Dion's I Surrender and at number 93 is the surprise 2004 hit from Moldavian trio, O-Zone. The impressive debut solo single from Gwen Stefani is at 92 and just missing out on a place in the top 90 is Anastacia with the powerful Left Outside Alone.

 Airhead is a forgotten classic, I dig it out sometimes - one of the girls (the cowgirl I think) now plays Roxy in Eastenders! Motorcycle's song was a #1 in my chart  Selma went top 5

More than half then!

I love Airhead, but it is one of only a few tracks I'm embarrassed about liking  . I had heard about one of the girls being in Eastenders, but I'm not familiar with anyone in Eastenders apart from the old regulars and Samantha Janus

Kicking off the top 90 is Jurgen Vries and Andrea Britton's take on Dido's Take My Hand. A very decent dance number and was a marked improvement on the original. Another dance tune enters just above it in the shape of When Love Takes Over by David Guetta featuring vocals from ex-Destiny's Child member, Kelly Rowland. An anthemic tune that was most certainly the song of my summer last year.

At just over 2 minutes long, the vibrant Separated By Motorways at 88 is one of the shortest songs in the mix. Number 87 sees what looks like a blip in the proceedings with Rainy Monday, a song that failed to go top 5 in my chart, appearing. I love it! But at the time, I obviously didn't think so much of it :( . The Huge hit from Cascada is at 86 and this is just outdone by the similar sounding Like The Sun by Trinity. Both are huge dance anthems of mine.

Rachel Steven's apparent tribute to Adam And The Ants is at 84 and Bill Oddie's daughter, Rosie and her Odd Squad (Now named Oddyssey) are at 83. Despite being a blatant copy of one of my most favourite songs ever, Fade To Grey, One Word gained enough affection from me to make number 82. This is out peaked by the rhythmic Black Horse And The Cherry Tree by KT Tunstall.

At number 80 we have Esser's former band, Ladyfuzz. Bouncy Ball is an eccentric song that tells the story of social acceptance surrounding the possession of, yes, a bouncy ball! Scottish mixed sex alternative band Sons & Daughters find themselves at number 79 with Gilt Complex, which has one of my favourite drumbeats of all time. More eccentricity at 78 as mismatched Welsh act, Los Campesinos! appear with International Tweexcore Underground. A failed attempt at representing Denmark at Eurovision follows at 77. Hera came second in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix behind (the inferior :P ) Brinck.

Dance Anthem, Forever, by Dee Dee is at 76 and what was once a MASSIVE favourite of mine, but so much now, Around The World (La La La La La) just sneaks into the top 75. Sophie Ellis-Bextor is at 74 with her race around Venice attempting to Catch You and one of the biggest Eurovision mistakes of all time appears at number 73. Mandoline was amongst the line-up for Slovenia's EMA, the selection of their Eurovision entrant, in 2006 but was not sent to the contest and Slovenia's best chance of victory in years was missed. There was outrage in the small state as the public voted for it in their droves, but the jury decided not to award it any points at all!

The Pipettes appear at 72 with the quirky, danceable number, Pull Shapes and this is just out peaked by the second appearance from The Long Blondes in this countdown. Both songs were number one hits within the same month on my chart.

The Finnish Eurovision entry from 2009 opens this section of the countdown. A brilliant song that didn't convey well live, thus ending in last place in the final. Very similar to Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't It Be Good melody wise. Another dance tune is at number 69. Heaven, a cover of a Bryan Adams song, was a massive success for DJ Sammy in late 2002. More dance at 68 with the sensational Something from Belgian trio, Lasgo.

Former Steps members H & Claire are at 67 with the One For Sorrow esque pop ditty, All Out Of Love. I loved the Cluedo style video! Anthemic electro track Destroy Everything You Touch is at 66 and a surprisingly great Brandy track appears at 65. The haunting trance number, Silence, by Delerium featuring vocals from Sarah McLachlan occupies number 64 and Britney Spears' epic single, Stronger is one place higher at 63.

The evocative backing track for the Lithuanian Eurovision Dance Contest couple in 2008 is at 62 and a second entry for KT Tunstall, the catchy Suddenly I See, is at number 61.

Brandy and Ladytron's songs are pretty good but I don't love them by any means. That H & Clarie song reminded me more of After The Love Has Gone by Steps, as well as The Winner Takes It All, Listen To Your Heartbeat and 50 other songs that sound like that  Heaven, Silence and Suddenly I See all topped my chart and appeared in my top 100 of the decade

 All Out Of Love is a bit generic, but I adored it when I was 12, so couldn't leave it out of the top 100. The Brandy song is similar, probably not one of my favourites of the moment, but I completely loved it when I was younger.

Opening the top 60 is You Are Alive by Fragma. This was my favourite track of theirs and will always be one of my all time best dance anthems. The haunting ballad, Bedshaped, by Keane is at number 59 and one place higher is one of the more spectacular blips in the chart, the number 12 smash, Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels) by Arcade Fire. It's one of those songs that grew on me massively long after it's original release and should definitely have been a number one hit looking back. The progression of the song is fabulous and the climax is immense.

Dramatic rock balled Broken by Seether featuring Evanescence's Amy Lee is at 57. This will always be one of those songs that I feel deserved so much more on the official chart. A similar sounding track by Italian female fronted rock outfit Lacuna Coil is one place higher at 56 and another non-number one, This Is The Life by Amy MacDonald is at number 55. Once again, it should have been a number one hit, being held off just by Sons & Daughters' Gilt Complex (Number 79 in this chart).

One of Girls Aloud's best singles, Biology is at 54. I adore the bizarre structure the song has and it is that alone which makes it stand out so much I think. Melodifestivalen 2008 entry Lay Your Love On Me by BWO is at 53. Any song that can fit in the word bourgeoisie in it deserves to be applauded. Maltese acoustic duo Chasing Pandora come in at number 52 with the moving Memories.

Finally, just missing out on the top 50 is the remarkable Belgian Eurovision entry from 2008. It is just so cute!! Unfortunately, a poor live vocal let the song down in the contest, but it remains one of my most favourite ESC entries.

In a bizarre occurrence, the vast majority of entries from the past two years come in this section. Maybe opinions on songs can be formed during life events? I'm not sure why, but all of these songs slotted in here perfectly.

Kicking off the top 50 is the first of a number of songs by The Modern, or Matinee Club as they were known at the time Discotheque Français was first released. This could be so huge if given the right promotion, alas it looks like it'll forever go under the radar. Recent dance anthem Release Me by Agnes comes in at 49. It's success in the UK, although I knew it could be huge, came as a massive surprise as I didn't think she'd be given an opportunity here.

Steps make their first appearance in the countdown here, the only song pre-2007 amongst this group of 10. I loved Steps, but this song was not one of my major favourites, but it's still really good. The orgasmic Driving by Thermostatic, with it's sensational electro climax is at 47 but is out peaked by Icelandic Eurovision entry from 2009, Yohanna. The performance was just absolutely perfect... well apart from the dress!!

Catchy number Remedy is at 45 and the even more catchy Stay The Night by Alcazar is at 44. It really should have been the Swedish ESC entry last year! More Eurovision related material at 43 in the form of dramatic turbofolk song Samara by Brigita Šuler. She placed third in the Slovenian EMA selection in 2008.

The best Girls Aloud song in my opinion, Untouchable, is at 42. At first I was mortified by the album version being cut down, but now I think the radio edit is an amazing improvement on it! Finally, just missing out on a top 40 place is Armenian Eurovision sisters Inga & Anush. Jan-Jan was a fabulous song, that everyone but me seemed to hate at first. Thankfully people's opinions changed and they ended in the top 10, just!

a poor showing for all of the 2009 songs, I expected Jan Jan, Release Me and Stay The Night to be higher after their lengthy stints either at #1 or in your chart as a whole :o Driving was great, I sent it to BJSC, it came 19th

  • Author

I expect that within time the 2009 songs will rise, I think longevity had a huge effect when compiling this chart! The fact Driving flopped in BJSC is a complete travesty!

Thanks for the comments so far :D

I think Driving was maybe a bit too subtle for BJSC...not to worry, I loved it and a couple of people were introduced to it who loved it!

Into the top 40 then, and kicking it off is Icelandic duo Euroband with their 2008 Eurovision effort, This Is My Life. I adored this, the vocals were spot on, but unfortunately it obtained a score much lower than it deserved. More Eurovision at 39 in the form of Bulgarian folk duo, Elitsa & Stoyan. Their song Water combined traditional Bulgarian music with a techno beat and it was truly mesmerising.

Canadian pop quartet Dragonette are at 38 with their sassy electro tune, I Get Around and Finnish symphonic metal act Nightwish are at 37 with 2007's Amaranth. Fame Academy winner, Alex Parks is at 36 with Cry and epic dance tune by Oxygen featuring vocals by Andrea Britton is at 35 - another song I charted lower than I should have looking back.

Some may be surprised to see Fast Food Rockers appear at 34, but I adore their second single. From the same year, summer anthem Sunlight by DJ Sammy is at 33 and from January that year, controversial Russian duo t.A.T.u. come in at 32 with All The Things She Said.

Finally at 31 we find the Slovenian Eurovision entry from 2001, the dramatic and indeed energizing pop tune, Energy. I remain adamant that this should have won that years contest.

Kicking off the top 30 is the underrated indie-electro anthem, Surrender by Manchester's Performance. Just above that is the epic Bring Me To Life by Evanescence, featuring vocal talents of Paul McCoy from 12 Stones.

Scooch make their only appearance at 28 with the oldest song on the countdown, More Than I Needed To Know from way back in January 2000. I remember being absolutely obsessed with this at the time and I still love it today. Slightly higher than them is another band from the same genre, Steps. It is Summer Of Love that actually earns them this position, but When I Said Goodbye is a decent ballad too. On it's own however, it would never have made it into this countdown. Electro-pop outfit The Modern appear once again with the sensational tune, Seven Oceans - a cancelled single that was due to be the third release after Industry on Mercury Records. They were cruelly dropped before this and their debut album could be released.

The subtly brilliant Here With Me by Dido breaks into the top 25 along with Icelandic girl group Nylon with the equally brilliant Losing A Friend. Swedish quartet A*Teens also make an appearance with Halfway Around The World. More Steps at 22 and German/Norwegian metal act Leaves' Eyes just miss out on a top 20 place with the epic Elegy.

027. Steps - When I Said Goodbye/Summer Of Love [1] (July 2000)

024. Nylon - Losing A Friend [1] (July 2006)

Say Cheese? oh dear  not a fan of that Steps b-side from summer 2001 but I did like When I Said Goodbye and Summer Of Love! The Nylon song is great, a real forgotten gem  nice to see Scooch there! My favourite song of their original lot was For Sure :D Water was incredible, spine tingling - Bulgaria will never better it. Energy wasn't even in my top 10 of 2001 - I didn't mind it but I liked others a lot more.

The verses of Say Cheese are divine! For Sure was my fourth favourite of the singles, just above When My Baby. I'm surprised Energy was quite low down with you, I thought it was amazing! I loved the Nylon song and the video! Bulgaria will indeed never beat Water  Unless they send Elitsa and Stoyan again with something even better :o

Into the top 20 then and I must confess that EVERY song in this top 20 could easily have been number one, and it was very difficult to sort them into some sort of order.

Scraping into the top 20 is Industry by The Modern. A single that generated a lot of attention for the wrong reasons when it became apparent that bulk buys of the single had been occurring during the first week of release. It was subsequently banned from charting. A Shame really as it would have been a top 30 hit with the multiple buys being deducted. It was probably this that made Mercury drop them, but then Mercury went on to completely mess up the release of number 19, You Are The One by Shiny Toy Guns. It is an AMAZING song and nobody can deny it, yet Mercury could only push it enough to get a peak position of 94, or something. Absolutely shocking!

Mr Rock & Roll by Amy MacDonald is at 18. A lovely acoustic number, and a wonderful ballad by Within Temptation is at 17. Soft Rock number The Reason by Hoobastank gets a number 16 position and the absolutely stunning Rebellion (lies) by Arcade Fire is at 15.

Ukrainian Eurovision Winner Ruslana makes it to number 14 - the only Eurovision winner I've voted for since starting to watch the contest. Perhaps a surprising appearance at number 13 for the Moulin Rouge track, Come What May, but I adore it. Dance anthem Castles In The Sky is at 12 and It's The Way You Make Me Feel by Steps, which deserved to be a UK number one hit, just misses out on the top 10.
