I always expected Mama Do to reach no.1, but Boys and Girls was a surprise and also Kelly's My Would Suck Without You was a massive surprise

I can remember many years ago, before the days of itunes, when I would use the Woolworths chart as a guide to the next week's chart, Atomic Kitten's 'Whole Again' was No.15 on their chart...when it came to Sunday, I was pretty gobsmacked to see it hit No.1!

They hadn't had a bad start to their career, with 3 Top 10 hits, but after 'Follow Me' only got to No.20, I don't think many anticipated a No.1, and such a huge one at that!

To those who say that they are shocked by everything that has gone to number 1 in 2010 - how did you not expect Everybody Hurts to go to number 1?
Apart from Owl City - pretty much every other #1 this year

I echo what Tony said.

'never expected to be #1' does NOT mean '#1s you don't like'. It means what it says - and Everybody Hurts (and Replay to a certain extent) were CERTAIN #1s regardless of whether or not you like them.

La Roux, Tinchy, Chipmunk basically all the grime artists from last year. :manson:

How are La Roux, Tinchy or Chipmunk grime in ANY way?

My Chemical Romance, Katie Melua/Eva Cassidy and Tinie Tempah have to be the three most surprising ones that come to mind immediately...

I definitely agree about MCR. To me at the time they were some noisy emo rockers that my sister played. But when they were played as number one it changed my life, I bought the album on the strength of it and have never stopped playing it!

Also whilst I spent ages before hand telling everyone I spoke to about the Killing In The Name campaign, I still never quite expected it to beat Joe. Soooo gald it did though (I did feel really bad for Joe in a way but I knew he'd climb the next week).

As for a couple of others already mentioned, Changes was virtually inevitable as I recall, especially after the crash, and I really thought it'd get xmas #1. It was the reason I bought a CD player as I'd been buying cassettes before that and was gonna stop buying music when they discontinued them.

And Katie/Eva was pretty inevitable too because it had been all over the media about it being the 'first' supermarket only single, a sign of the future and all that. Don't think anyones done it since though.

Another one I remember is Mr Blobby regaining number one at xmas 1993, no-one ever expected Take That to drop, as I remember it anyway.

I rarely see a number one coming these days as I don't use itunes and I don't have a clue what grime is. Bring back rock and pop per-lease!! I never expected to feel out of touch with the charts at the ripe old age of 27 lol!

Years ago I was kinda shocked when LeAnn Rimes 'Can't Fight The Moonlight' went No.1 in the UK. As much as I liked the song I never thought I'd see LeAnn Rimes at No.1
All the songs this year.

Apart from Bad Romance in the first week of 2010 :P  Its been the only decent #1 of the year so far

Tinchy and Chipmunk are both grime artists. La Roux are electropop or synthpop.

I never expected Black eyed Peas meet me halfway to go to Number 1 since the first two singles already went to number 1 and the album sold loads
It seems odd now as the song obviously became a 21st century classic, but I would never have guessed Sex On Fire until it happened. The Kings Of Leon just WEREN'T a singles force.

Completely agree. It came as a huge surprise when I saw it climb as fast as it did on iTunes and it's 'Chasing Cars'-like chart run, is just as shocking/impressive!

I agree, I didnt actually like it at first and was shocked that it reached number 1, It grew on me over time obviously

I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking "this should at least get them a top 10"

As I recall, it was released onto iTunes on the Monday? It shot up, got into the top 10 by the evening and was about #6 before I went to bed, then #1 the next morning. I remember really hoping for it to stay there and then looking at the popularity bars on Wednesday and it had about 250% of the #2 (I Kissed A Girl I think?). I didn't see the mids back then so it seemed a foregone conclusion that it would reach the top, but I recall the gap wasn't that big? It sold 44k which was about 2,000 less than katy perry had managed the previous week.

All the songs this year.

So you're saying nobody expected Iyaz, Owl City or Helping Haiti to be #1.

Seriously?

It's fair enough to say Jason and Tinie were somewhat unexpected #1s, but OC, HH and to a lesser extent Iyaz could be seen a mile off.

Iyaz was quite a surprise, I saw people speculating about it, but I never actually thought they'd be right until it happened. It didn't get enough video play up until that time, so I didn't think it would be popular enough - seems videos don't matter anymore, as I'd only seen Tinie twice before on music channels, previous to it reaching #1, since then, it's been unmissable!
