Am I right in thinking there's a new fashion for individual fancy cupcakes layered on cake stands to give the impression of the traditional tiered cake? Or is that just for anniversary parties and such?

It's been a big chocolate cake for the last few weddings I've been to. Cup cakes are just too ordinary.
