March 21, 201015 yr Author Gavin Ryan Chart Commentary (Thanks to Gavin Ryan) Train’s lead singer Pat Monahan was quoted as saying ‘I want(ed) to write an INXS-y song’, and thus twenty-six years after INXS did it in Australia, he and his group Train have scored their first ever Australian No.1 single this week with “Hey, Soul Sister” (DL: 2 to 1, Phys: 1 debut), which dethrones Rihanna and her “Rude Boy” (DL: 1 to 3) after two weeks at the top, dropping down to No.3. Train also mention another former chart-topping track in their single, which is also from 1984, Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” (Dec 84-Jan 85, 5 weeks), but their most used 80’s band phrase in the song, Mr. Mister, did not top the charts here, peaking at No.4 in January 1986 with “Broken Wings”. “Hey, Soul Sister” is the 962nd No.1 single in Australia, and also the 629th American act to top our charts, plus it’s the 105th for the Columbia label, but their first since Beyonce’s “Irreplacable” which topped the charts in the first week of 2007. It’s the sixth ‘Hey’ at No.1, the last being January 2004’s “Hey Ya” by Outkast, only the second ‘Soul’ single, with Jesse McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul” from April 2005 being the only other one, whilst it’s the first song with ‘Sister’ in it’s title to top our charts, although there have been plenty of groups with sister in their title to have reached No.1. Another thing of note is that it’s the first time since November 23rd, 2009 that the No.1 digital and physical singles are the same, as “Hey, Soul Sister” debuts at the top of the physical charts this week. Back then it was “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha that did it for a single week, since then every national No.1 has reached the top on digital sales only. Jason DeRulo’s “In My Head” (DL: 3 to 2) climbs back up one spot to No.2, whilst current tourist David Guetta stays stable at No.4 with his “Memories” (DL: 4 hold) of Kid Cudi. Cheryl Cole has been stuck at No.9 for a couple of weeks, but this week her “3 Words” (DL: 8 to 5) jump up four places to No.5, whilst Iyaz and his “Replay” (DL: 6 hold) are the only other track not to move inside the Top 10, staying at No.6 this week. Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah” (DL: 10 to 9, Phys: 5 to 4) is up a single notch again this week to No.7, and after thirteen weeks inside the Top 5 (that’s since 21-Dec-2009) Owl City drop down to No.8 with their track “Fireflies” (DL: 5 to 7). Two weeks ago Lady GaGa and Beyonce’s “Telephone” (DL: 11 to 8) jumped into the Top 10 at No.8, and now that GaGa is touring the country and the epic video clip for the single is out, it all helps contribute to the song climbing back into the Top 10 this week at No.9. The Midnight Beast manage to hold on for one (possible) last week inside the Top 10 at No.10 with their parody of “Tik Tok” (DL: 7 to 10). NEW PEAKS: Timbaland and Katy Perry knock on the door of the Top 10 by taking “If We Ever Meet Again” (DL: 13 hold) up to No.11 this week, and right behind them is The Black Eyed Peas and “Imma Be” (DL: 15 to 11), up five places to No.12. Also inside the Top 20 scoring new peaks is Richard Vission with “I Like That” (DL: 29 to 25) at No.16 and Justin Bieber who is up six places to No.18 with the new UK No.3 debut “Baby” (DL: 24 to 17). Adam Lambert stormed up the charts last week, but this week rise’s three places to No.23 with “Whataya Want From Me” (DL: 26 to 23). Jay-Z is back-to-back with his old and new track, the new one “Young Forever” (DL: 33 to 29) climbing four places to No.28. Florence + The Machine are up five places to No.30 with “You Got the Love” (DL: 35 to 31), Mumford and Sons score a new peak of No.32 with “The Cave” (DL: 34 to 33), and Lifehouse are up nine places with their latest track “Halfway Gone” (DL: 46 to 37), now at No.38. Cascada score a new peak of No.41 with their latest single “Fever” (DL: 42 to 40). Local act KissChasy break into the Top 50 at No.44 with their new track “Dinosaur”, whilst the new No.1 album act Angus and Julia Stone leap back up the charts thirty-seven places to land at No.50 with “And the Boys”. Local duo The Only score the highest new entry of the week by debuting at No.43 with their latest dance anthem “The Only F***ing Rave Party”. The guys have been playing NSW recently and will be touring around that state until mid-April as a part of the Ministry of Sound House Sessions which winds up in Brisbane at the end of April. After which they will be a featured act in the ‘Groovin the Moo Festival’ during May playing in every state. The guys previously have charted on the ARIA Club Chart with their track “Dancin” which cracked the Top 20, and have done remixes in the past for Dizzee Rascal, Armand Van Helden, Tyken and The Cyberpunkers. Paramore debut at No.47 with the third single from their “Brand New Eyes” album entitled “The Only Exception”, which has been helped by the groups recent (February 2010) appearances as a part of the Soundwave Festival. The two previous track from the album were “Ignorance” (No.35, Sept 2009) and “Brick By Boring Brick” (No.85, Jan 2010). Below Top 50: Rob Thomas moves up to a new peak of No.60 with his latest track “Mockingbird”. And local act Bluejuice leap up eighteen places to No.64 with their new single “Ain’t Telling the Truth”. Not peaking, but moving back up the charts are Owl City and “Vanilla Twilight” which is up eleven places to No.59. New chart-toppers Train take their first Top 5 hit “Drops of Jupiter” up twenty places to No.75 and up twenty-four places to No.76 is Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and their track “Home”. Mention must also go to Lady GaGa’s older tracks, which helped by her (just started) national tour sees them all rise this week, with longest EVER ARIA Top 100 single “Just Dance” leaping twenty-five places to No.74 (82nd week), and now equal-second-longest-charting Top 100 single “Poker Face” climbs back up to No.56 (78th week). And up sixteen places to No.77 is “Paparazzi”, with her only track not to climb being “Bad Romance” which is down four places to No.17. The only two entries lower down the charts come firstly from local dance act T-Rek and their former ARIA Club Chart No.1 single “Out My Bitch”, debuting at No.91. And Chicago four-piece OK Go and their second ARIA Top 100 chart appearance with “This Too Shall Pass”, which enters at No.97, plus check out the video (which they always outdo themselves in) to see one of the best knock-on-effect clips ever here, . The group have previously charted with “Here it Goes Again” which hit No.63 in November of 2006. The first new locally produced No.1 for the year goes to…. Angus and Julia Stone and their second album “Down the Way”, which debuts at the top of the ARIA Album charts, a first for the brother and sister duo, whilst their first album “A Book Like This” (HP-6, Sept 2007) holds at No.26, in it’s accumulated 66th week in the Top 100. Angus and Julia Stone become only the seventh duo to top our charts, and only the second brother and sister duo to do it, with The Carpenters and their “Very Best of” reaching the top in February 1983 for a single week being the other such sibling duo to hit No.1. The last duo to hit No.1 were also siblings, but husband and wife, in the form of Kasey Chambers and her husband Shane Nicholson who hit the top in April 2008 with “Rattling Bones”. And of the ten No.1 albums by duo’s, the last five have all been by local acts, Savage Garden (1997 and 1999) and The Presets (April 2008). Angus and Julia become the 73rd Australian act to top the Album Charts (1965-2010), the last being Powderfinger in November of 2009 with “Golden Rule”. “Down the Way” is the 143rd locally performed No.1 album, and it is the fifth ‘Down’ to top our charts, the last one being also by a local act, 28 Days with “UpStyleDown” (July 2000). It’s the seventh ‘Way’ at No.1, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ July 2002 set “By the Way” being the last. This new chart-topper also becomes the 609th No.1 album in Australia (1965-2010). With Lady GaGa touring the country at the moment, four of her five current Top 100 singles climb this week, meanwhile her re-packaged album “The Fame Monster” hits a new peak by climbing up four places to No.2. Last weeks top two drop down two places each, with the former No.1 by The Gorillaz, “Plastic Beach” falling to No.3 and another former chart-topper “Sigh No More” by Mumford and Sons down to No.4. The other Top 10 debut from last week, Jason DeRulo’s self-titled album falls back one place to No.5 and the two other chart-topping albums of this year fall into the next two placings, k.d. Lang’s “Recollection” is down three places to No.6 and Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” falls two places to No.7. Debuting at No.8 is “Valleys of Neptune” by Jimi Hendrix, and album of previously unreleased material recorded in early 1969 around the same time his “Electric Ladyland (HP-3, March 1969) album was recorded. Jimi has not graced out charts with any new recordings since September 1999 when his “Live at Woodstock” set reached No.87 (Sept 1999), and his last visit to the Top 10 was back in June 1994 with the No.2 set “Blues”. Jimi was also the second act to score a No.1 with the ‘Best of’ collection, his “Smash Hits” set reached No.1 on the 23rd of November in 1968, knocking off the first greatest hits number one by The Seekers (July to Nov 1968, 17 weeks at No.1). Rounding out the rest of the Top 10 is a couple of ‘love’ albums, with David Guetta’s “One Love” album down two places to No.9 and Michael Buble holding on at No.10 with his “Crazy Love” set. Dropping out of the Top 10 were Taylor Swift and “Fearless” at No.11 and The Black Eyed Peas with “The E.N.D.” falling to No.12. The only new peak for the week outside the Top 10 comes from Train and their new album “Save Me, San Francisco”, which is up twelve places to No.24. The ninth studio album for local act Hoodoo Gurus debuts at No.16, entitled “Purity of Essence”. It’s their first album in six years, their last album being March 2004’s “Mach Schau” which it No.67, and its their first Top 50 appearance since “Blue Cave” hit No.18 in June of 1996. American indie rock duo of Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and James Mercer (from indie rock band The Shins) have teamed up as Broken Bells, and their self-titled debut album enters at No.20. Another American duo also enter, this time The White Stripes at No.33 with “Under Great White Northern Lights”, their first live album which they recorded in 2007 during their Canadian tour, plus the tour has also been released on DVD. A couple of weeks ago Avril Lavigne debuted on the singles chart with her latest track “Alice”. The track is taken from the newly debuting set “Almost Alice”, which enters at No.32, and features Alice in Wonderland themed tracks performed by Owl City, The All-American Rejects, Shinedown, Metro Station, Tokio Hotel, 3OH!3, Plain White T’s, Franz Ferdinand and Wolfmother. Two more local acts also score Top 50 entries, with The Vasco Era debuting at No.48 with their second album “Lucille”, and coming in at No.50 is the greatest hits collection for Evermore. Plus there is a giant leap for local girl Lisa Mitchell, who is up thirty-eight places to No.35 with her album “Wonder”, helped by the radio release of the forthcoming April released single “Oh! Hark!”.
