Posted July 7, 200619 yr The UK is a nation of workplace chameleons who change their identities to get ahead in their careers, according to a study by Vodaphone. The survey reveals that 56% of employees change their personality and identity to some extent. 6% change everything about themselves. Women are more likely than men to do this. 20% change their appearance for work. 60% of graduate trainees adopt false characteristics to get accepted. The most chameleon workers are in media or marketing. Least are in education and health. would you change yourself to progress your career, or do you already do it?
July 7, 200619 yr I am surprised the figures are that low tbh I thought it would be higher As long as people don't tell downright lies I think it is ok to be creative with career history etc
July 11, 200619 yr Wearing a suit and tie to the office is one thing, but pretending to be this whole other person and changing your own personality just to be more "marketable" in the work-place is just fukkin' lame to be honest...
July 12, 200619 yr I am a freelancer / outsourced consultant so I can just be myself, I have no reason to have to suck up to anyone or be different to what I am all I have to do is demonstrate that I can do the role and my CV suggests that I can But I can understand why some people change their personalities etc in the work place, if someone is missing out on promotions for being a loner or being a bit of a c**k they need to take a look at themselves and why they are being overlooked for promotion and adapt accordingly, if they are loners then they should get to chat more to colleagues, if they are c**k's they need to stop being so etc
July 12, 200619 yr I'm surprised only 20% change their appearance for work. That would seem perfectly sensible to me. I'd be one of those if I go to work. Depednds on your type of work of course, but many a work place has a shirt and tie appearance or wearing a suite in business. You would dress up to go to a party, or a football match or whatever it's only sensible. And for those of us, sefl-employed, do you dress the same when you go to see your customers, your bank manager etc? Well you may do, but often it's quite unsuitable, depending on your line of self-employment.
July 12, 200619 yr if i need to go to the bank, i go as im dressed, work clothes or not. im a working man and am not ashamed to be seen scruffy.. i think any intelligent person would see your atire exactly for what it is, and not judge the person adversely because of it. dressing up doesnt alter the content of my personality or ability to do the job in hand.
