This year it seems like it's pretty difficult to establish just what "novelty" actually is. I still think that none of these songs are anywhere near as novelty as Ireland or Latvia 2008, as they were intentionally stupid in the hope of winning votes. But it backfired, particularly for the former. :D

Haha, I knew the UK would lap that up, particularly with Dustin out in the semis. I have to say though, I had a huge soft spot for Wolves Of The Sea :drama: I didn't vote for it but it was in my chart for about 2 months

I personally think some of that may be due to the Lithuanian diaspora in the UK myself. :heehee: We only gave them five in the semi-final, and Lithuania eight!

Dunno who on earth voted for Lithuania, in my opinion, it was the worst song of ESC 2008, along with Spain

There's not THAT much of a Lithuanian diaspora here, is there? :o

Personally, I've never met anyone in the UK who is from Lithuania or Poland or wherever, but I don't live in a big city, so it's hard to say

There used to be loads of Eastern Europeans in Brighton, Polish inparticular but I knew a couple of Latvians at uni and quite a few Polish people. I'm not sure that there are still so many now, I think a lot of them returned home in 2008/9.
I think the jury votes will ensure that any diaspora influenced 7's and 8's in the televote will be reduced to 2's and 3's overall in the case of a crap song!

Might be a surprise to hear but in Carmarthen, Eastern European's are coming close to outnumbering Welsh people  . Seems such a strange place for them to end up in

I'm astonished to see this thread has generated so many views. :o I didn't realise my predictions were that popular. :kink: I shall update these in a few days most likely, although not much has changed tbh. Not yet anyway.

I'll be making my last semi-final predictions, complete with a set of scores (boredom alert) tomorrow. Things may have altered quite a bit now that we've had the rehearsals to watch. :D

Ok so here is my final prediction for Tuesday's semi final. I've gone through each country and wildly guessed how they will vote. What can I say, I'm at home and bored!

  1. Slovakia 155
  2. Belgium 134
  3. Greece 131
  4. Albania 121
  5. Serbia 84
  6. Latvia 81
  7. Iceland 70
  8. Moldova 69
  9. Bosnia-Herzegovina 65
  10. Finland 52
  11. Russia 47
  12. Estonia 47
  13. Belarus 44
  14. Portugal 24
  15. FYR Macedonia 21
  16. Poland 8
  17. Malta 7

I really think the final place will be close, with any one of four countries vying for it. I think the top nine are pretty much guaranteed to go through though, however I could be overestimating Latvia as no one else seems to think it's going to do much. Think Slovakia will win the semi, but won't do much in the final...

Portugal were the biggest surprises for me! Oh...and Slovakia not getting through.

I fell into the exact same trap with Slovakia and Portugal!

I honestly thought Slovakia would get votes all round and runaway with it! Greece went down really well in the hall, and I won't be surprised now to hear that they've won it.

Here's what I'm saying for semi final two then... A lot more confident over the top nine getting through here, and I think it might just be the tenth spot that lets me down. But then if Russia can qualify with an atrocious song, I don't see why Ukraine can't with a half decent one - and one sung well!

  1. Azerbaijan 158
  2. Croatia 137
  3. Sweden 135
  4. Romania 110
  5. Israel 101
  6. Turkey 89
  7. Armenia 87
  8. Ireland 70
  9. Denmark 65
  10. Ukraine 41
  11. Georgia 33
  12. Cyprus 27
  13. Lithuania 15
  14. Switzerland 14
  15. Bulgaria 12
  16. Netherlands 5
  17. Slovenia 3

Let me know what you think! @D

Cyprus and/or Georgia could thwart Ukraine and/or Denmark, otherwise I completely agree, particularly with the bottom five.

I think Georgia's snoozefest may get lost amongst the far superior ballads myself. Cyprus hmm...I'd like to see them qualify, but their record goes against them and this song isn't much better than others that have failed to qualify in the past few years. And not nearly as good as 'Comme Ci, Comme Ca'!
