Claudia Winkleman has been confirmed as the surprise choice to replace Jonathan Ross on Film 2010.

The presenter, who is best known for Strictly Come Dancing spin-off series It Takes Two, will take over as host of the show later this year.

Speaking about her new role, she said: "I am completely over the moon about being given this enormous honour and am incredibly proud to be presenting the new look Film 2010. It's an honour to follow on from the brilliant Jonathan Ross.

"I have been lucky enough to cover the BAFTAs and present the UK broadcasts of the Oscars and the Golden Globes for years and now to be able to work with the producers on Film 2010 is just amazing."

The popular BBC series originally launched in 1972 with veteran movie critic Barry Norman. He was replaced in 1999 by Jonathan Ross.

Many believed that the critic and broadcaster Mark Kermode would fill the role. However, he revealed last week that he hadn't been approached about the series.

Film 2010 will relaunch in September with a new format, which will see it feature a range of cinema experts and live studio guests.

Should be interesting to see what she brings to the show but i never wouldve thought she would take over.

Christ, she knows even less about films that Ross..... <_<

Ridiculous, this programme used to have credibility when Barry Norman was in charge, then Johnathan Ross pretty much RUINED it, and now they're not even attempting to get any of the show's credibility back anymore.... I can think of three knowledgable Film Critics who have actually written proper reviews, articles in magazines, journals or newspapers that spring to mind.... Mark Kermode (who's already been mentioned, has actually written a few books too, the natural choice surely ffs...), Kim Newman (who's written for Empire for yonks, been on TV a bit too..), Derek Malcolm (the main Guardian film critic for years..).

Is it just because Winkelman is already embedded and will come cheap or something.....? -_-

A complete joke. And I like Claudia Winkleman but she is to film critiquing what Alan Titchmarsh is to hardline impartial interviewing.

Mark Kermode should have got it.

What next .... James Cordon to present Match Of The Day?

Well I won't be watching anymore. I watch it every week and actually really like Wossy's reviews (although I doubt he comes up with alot of them himself), but why on earth pick her? Alex Zane or Johnny Vaungh would even be better FFS
At least give her a chance 'cause she might actually be good. I'll be watching :kink:

Maybe! It could be worse ... it could be Davina McCall (but maybe she was first choice and turned it down).

I'm of the old school that ... no-one did this quite like Barry Norman.

Personally ... I'd like to have seen Mariella Fostrup do it.

Claudia Winkleman has described taking over hosting duties of Film 2010 as a "great honour".

However, the TV presenter, who will replace Jonathan Ross on the show later this year, admitted that she expects some movie fans to be "horrified" by her appointment.

Speaking on Richard Bacon's Five Live programme, the 38-year-old said: "I can't quite believe it. I spent every meeting I've had at the BBC over the last ten years talking about how I love film. Then they say, 'Yadda-yadda, can you tell us about the foxtrot?'

"But everyone, don't panic. It's not just me. That would be horrifying. There will be brilliant critics and all kinds of people sharing their knowledge because I am rubbish when it comes to horror for instance.

"Also, where I might be incredible opinionated in things like The Hurt Locker vs Avatar, you may want to hear from other people."

She added: "I can't believe it and am properly over the moon... I am going to take it seriously and I'm sure lots of people will be horrified, but I'm looking forward to proving them wrong. It's an honour and I never use those words. It feels like a proper holy-moly you-need-to-sit-down moment. My mum and dad cried when I told them that I had got the job."

Winkleman also confirmed that she will be returning for another series of Strictly Come Dancing spinoff show It Takes Two in the autumn.

"I absolutely love Strictly, I am very lucky," she added. "They are the best shows in the world."

Let's face it my friends, that last reviewers of the 20th century were siskel, ebert and Barry Norman on this side of the atlantic, because at least they had the balls to say something is $h!t. Granted, kermode does that, but I'd probably like him more if he didn't come across as a sanctimonious prick who jerks off to the sight of himself in the mirror; so in short, I give up on movie reviews on TV, because they're $h!t. And we have the BBC to thank.

Ebert is/was awful!

I always wondered what Jonathan Ross's critic credentials were, and now it's pretty obvious that they don't really want a critic to present it - or they would've gone with someone with a bit more credibility. I don't watch it but I think it's sad that the brand carries a lot of weight with it and people will be sucked into buying or watching someone because Claudia thinks the lead guy was hot and gave it four stars (or something equally ridiculous).

Jonathan's brother Paul has more credentials to talk about film than most others ... he may be very 'down-market' but he does know his stuff.

Let's start with the bit that hurts. The BBC is a floundering whale that ceased to merit its public funding mandate over 20 years ago now. All teh cuts they've made have been shameful, and I'm amazed that in recent years, there have been no comedies, no documentaries of note that come close to being of the calibre of something like planet earth or the blackadder series, because that's what the BBC does - it stifles its talent into political correctness, and rests on its laurels while essentially profiteering from the few successful shows that it has. wonders of the solar system? I'll bet real money it turns up on UKTV soon, or even gets bought up by discovery. Doctor Who? One of the most profitable franchises in years now, but I guarantee you that the public who are paying TV licences will see a penny from international and domestic sales. The director general will just state "what residuals" to any enquiry, and give a big f*** you. Because that is, simply what the BBC does now. Hell. They're even making inroads to making the whole corporation look "young and hip", with this slow lean towards hiring people south of the 55 mark.

Now. Here's some more truth. Ross is an offensive cocksucker, and worse than that, he's boring. In the few times I've tuned into film since Barry left, I've found his reviews to err on the side of complimentary, lest he lose the good will of hollywood to appear on his talk shows, so no, it doesn't surprise me that the BBC would yet again rape the $h!t out of a once wonderful review programme and hand it over to someone like winkleman, who spent a 3 hour f***ing award ceremony basically talking about how gorgeous the stars looked, and how angela looked so humble to be on the red carpet. Because of course, Angela is an A lister in the UK, right? And why did sky make the link to the oscars with her? because of a talk show they gave her? really?

For me, I'll still to empire and their well known competitor. At list I won't have to swallow the words of some bint who's probably more worried about image than wossy ever was.

I agree completely 100% with the boldened part, I've NEVER likes Ross, even when he was hosting "The Incredibly Strange Film Show" on Channel 4, I always thought "good show, but there's much better than you that could've presented this..", he's an overgrown schoolkid with pretty dodgy, teenaged attitudes towards women, in short the guy's a grade-A dick and he always has been ever since him and his sharp suits tried to be a Ben Elton-lite back in the 80s....

As for Claudia Winkelman, if you were to look up the word "vapid" in a dictionary, you'd find a picture of her... Her "presenting" skills at the Oscars were a fukkin' embarrassment.... Mark Kermode may be a little bit too much in love with himself, but, hell, at least he actually knows what he's talking about, Mariella Frostrup would be okay as well....

Claudia - stick to the foxtrot love and leave the film criticism to the real critics....

Claudia Winkleman? That dire woman who was part of an even more dire panel at this years (and last years) Oscars? The one who knows nought about film and the best commentary that she could muster for a potential Colin Firth/Carey Mulligan win was that "it would make it a great year for the Brits, now lets talk about fashion..." Great choice BBC

Mark Kermode should have been chosen. Best man for the job.

I suggested her too ... intelligent and looks good in front of the camera.

I can't stand Kermode ... everytime I see him on the arts programs I want to strangle him ... he's too far up his own arse.

Yes, maybe, but he's QUALIFIED to talk in an intelligent, critical manner about films... Something that Miss Winkelmann is most assuredly not....

Oh god she irritates me, I would have prefered that James whathisname on Radio 1, Claudia Winkleman knows nothing about the film genre
