Chris Evans on R2 has just referred to the famous "Battle of the Bands" in 1995, the race for number 1 when Blur and Oasis released new singles in the same week, at the height of the Britpop phenomenum. (Big House & Roll With It, IIRC

Does anyone know the first week sales for the two singles? It will be interesting to compare this to the likes of the X Factor winners etc., or other releases that have intense exposure in their first week.

I actually think they're fairly similar and both sets of fans seem to accept that they were both fairly low points of the bands' singles careers. Personally I reckon RWI has the edge musically (Country House is pretty derivative) but the lyrics are pretty lousy.

There's no way that Country House is as awful as people make out. The guitar fills the whole way through are pretty great. The backing vocals are great The breakdown bit is great too. Roll With It does nothing for me at all.

It's not awful at all, but it's just a bit samey given Blur's past output (and what they've done since). Same story for Oasis, not a clue with Roll With It was released as second single. Morning Glory would have annihilated Country House methinks.

agreed - by both band's standards, both singles were below par... but RWI is, to my mind, the better single.... whilst Blur were IMO undeniably the better band all round.

I think both songs were weak compared to the bands other work, I personally prefer RWI but its still not up to their standards

Oasis definately imo the real winners music wise, Blur's 'Song 2' is a great song, but its not a touch on 'wonderwall', 'dont look back in anger' or 'live forever'

^^ Song 2 isn't really Blur's best though, especially if you've heard their entire catalogue. Maybe it's just me but when I think best Blur songs I'm thinking The Universal, Beetlebum, For Tomorrow, This Is A Low, Coffee & TV etc, Song 2 wouldn't even be in my top 10 Blur songs.

maybe not their best then, but certainly one of them as it is still heard now and on that car advert

Parklife, Coffee and TV and Girls and Boys are also good songs from them

Tender will always be my favourite Blur song, then Beetlebum, Girls & Boys and Song 2. Country House isn't THAT far off the top actually, I've always found Blur's back catalogue doesn't have the same strength in depth even if the best songs are more spread out than with Oasis,

Oasis had a handful of decent songs - Live Forever is seriously fantastic and far better than any Blur single. I've killed off most Blur singles but I still haven't killed off Live Forever.

Blur are in a different league to Oasis though. Greatness on nearly every album and a hunger for new sounds and effortless melody - especially on the ballads.

Caramel is one of the greatest pieces of music I've had the pleasure of hearing. Better than Radiohead too.

At the time i wasnt a fan of oasis at all and was so happy Blur beat them to number 1, i like roll with it now but i still prefer country house.

I think Blur's best period was 'Modern Life Is Rubbish' - the album that flopped for them. I loved their exploration of the mod genre on this album, the 60s influences.... their more successful stuff is actually the stuff I liked least.... the Parklife album in particular is so full of filler, it sould have easily been a CD single. And The Great Escape.... terrible album.

As an albums band, I think early Oasis beat Blur hands down.... but Oasis, IMO, only ever made 3 good albums - Definitely Maybe, What's The Story and the triumphant return to glory that was Dig Out Your Soul, which was massively underrated.

I like DOYS but for me its predecessor (Don't Believe The Truth) beats it hands down. Morning Glory is probably my favourite British album ever.
