I'm hoping the other gaps in weekend dates in July & August lead to more northern dates.

Thanks TT :D I might go to this one but need more info like is it seated and the capacity

Not sure but dalmatian on Devoted reckons 10,000 capacity.

Looks like we don't need to rule out a future Arena gig.

Tigers announce first summer gig

8 April 2010, 6:51 amBy Andy MannLeicester Tigers will break new ground when Welford Road hosts a stadium concert for the first time this summer.Brit Award-winner Will Young is the headline act for Friday, July 16, with a full supporting bill to be confirmed.

Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE said: "We are thrilled that we have a big summer gig in place for Welford Road.

"The club has been working hard with our promoters Squareleg Entertainment to bring live music to Welford Road and are delighted to have secured one of the country's most popular performers.

"We have been working closely with Leicester City Council to ensure there are no clashes with other events in the city and it will be great for Leicester as a city to be able to host stadium concerts for the first time.

"With the new 10,700-seat Caterpillar Stand we have put ourselves in a good position to host stadium concerts.

"We are hopeful of announcing the details of a second summer concert shortly. We believe these events will put Tigers on the stadium concert map."

Will Young has sold more than eight million albums since winning the original Pop Idol competition in 2002.

His debut single Evergreen/Anything is Possible was the biggest selling single in the UK in the last decade while the worldwide hit Leave Right Now was nominated as the Best British Single of the last 25 years at the 2005 Brit Awards. He won the Brit Award for Best Breakthrough Artist in 2003 while his song Your Game landed him the Brit Award for Best British Single in 2005. His 2009 greatest hits album The Hits was one of last Christmas's top sellers, giving Will Young his fifth platinum album in seven years.

Malcolm Spencer, event director at Squareleg Entertainment, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Leicester Tigers and I am sure Will Young will be delighted to be one of the first artists to perform at Welford Road."

Ticket details are set to be announced next week. Keep an eye on www.leicestertigers.com for details.

Plans for the city's first live stadium concerts have been announced.

Multi-platinum selling singer Will Young has been confirmed to play at Welford Road this summer, while details of another big-name artist should be confirmed by Leicester Tigers next week.

The club said the 2002 Pop Idol winner and Brit Award recipient will perform in front of crowds of up to 19,000 on Friday, July 16.

Young, who has sold more than 8m albums worldwide, recorded the biggest selling single of the last decade with Evergreen.

In July last year the Tigers announced plans to use the club's ground as one of the biggest rock and pop venues in the Midlands over the next 10 years.

Up to 40,000 people could watch some of the top names in music perform at Welford Road under plans which would capitalise on the £60m redevelopment of the ground.

The club said the Caterpillar stand and parts of the Alliance and Leicester stand would be used to seat fans, while other concert-goers would stand on parts of the pitch near to the stage.

Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE said: "We are thrilled that we have a big summer gig in place for Welford Road.

Ticket details are due to be released next week.

Thanks to RosieD on Devoted for this:

"The stage, which is 20 metres wide, will be on the pitch tight to the Caterpillar Stand and the views will be tremendous.

So there aren't any standing tickets then - and it looks like Will has no support act. Wonder if he'll do a full tour set rather than the 13 he did at the Mercedes Benz gig. It's only another 4 songs.
