I love music that just sounds like it came from a higher plane, like it's creators were on some hallucinogenic drugs, something that sounds other worldly.

I'd like to find more

Let start with some classics

No way could this thread go without the inventors of the genre Dreampop - A.R. Kane

Spermwhale Trip Over

Fotzepolitic sounds great. I really love Bluebeard.

Yeah, Cocteau Twins are amazing. Love "Carolyn's Fingers" as well, have you heard it? I only have the songs from "Heaven or Las Vegas" and "Treasure", but I definitely want to have all their stuff sometime... "Carolyn's Fingers" I just found on YouTube though, as well as some other ones.

I like Explosions in the Sky as well.

Oh, guys, have a listen to this band! It's Sleemakeswaves! Very nice stuff!

I have Stars and Topsoil which is the best of Cocteau Twins, and Four Calender Cafe and Victorialand. They are hit and miss for me - not sure I like the metalicism. Bluebeard is definatly my fave.

My list of ethereal music:

- anything from GAS (the German musician Wolfgang Voight); his music is really ethereal

- Ulrich Schnauss (every song; highly recommended)

- Biosphere (the Norwegian artist Geir Jensen)

- Global Communication (you definitely must listen to their two albums, esp. this one)

- Aphex Twin (Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Vol. II)

- Slowdive

- Cocteau Twins

- Maps (only the first album)

- Chapterhouse

- The Orb

- Jean-Michel Jarre (Oxygene, Oxygene 7-13)

- Boards of Canada

- Lush (esp. Gala & Spooky albums)

- Robin Guthrie (the Cocteau Twins guitarist; esp. Continental album)

- My Bloody Valentine (even if they're very noisy)

- Waldeck

- M83

- The Future Sound of London (esp. Lifeforms & Archives pt. 1-5)

Aphex Twin - Xtal

Global Communication - 9:25

The Future Sound of London - Dead Skin Cells

M83 - We Own the Sky

Alin, I think you live in my record collection.

Chapterhouse - Pearl

If I float up to heaven, I want either this:

Maps - To the Sky (from my favourite album of the past 5 years)

or this

to soundtrack my ascent.

Also, this is pretty ethereal as well:

I will have to check some of that out. See loads of those band names floating around places but never got around to listening to them...

Other recommendations (worth your attention):

Little Dragon - Fortune

(trust me, it's a very beautiful song; you could listen to it forever)

Brian Eno - Just Another Day

(superb!)

Bel Canto - Birds of Passage

(vocal: Anneli Drecker -- she's like a Nordic Liz Fraser; other members: Biosphere, Nils Johanssen)

Royksopp - Sparks

(vocal: Anneli Drecker)

Banco De Gaia - Kincajou

(fab song! I've played many, many times)

Zero 7 - I Have Seen

(their best song IMO)

The Knife - NY Hotel

(only 2 min 50 sec but it 'says' a lot)

Fever Ray - Keep the Streets Empty For Me

(this song is from another dimension, it's so brilliant! Just in case you don't know: Fever Ray = Karin from The Knife)

Alin, I think you live in my record collection.

Really? What else do you listen to?

Also, this is pretty ethereal as well:

Roygbiv, Aquarius and Dayvan Cowboy are three essential BoC songs.

Love everything posted in this thread so far, good stuff! Some of the stuff that the Dandy Warhols put out in the late 90's is very tripped out, especially the opening track on the 'Come Down' album, Be-In. There's a track called I Love You on the same album which is very droney and spacey too. Not sure if anyone mentioned Sigur Ros, but Svefn-G-Englar is definately worthy of the ethereal tag - there's so much reverb it sounds as if it was recorded in a cavern!

If I may:

Portishead - Roads

Tricky - Pumpkin

Alpha - Sometime Later

Royksopp - Curves

Zero 7 - Somersault

This is my favourite type of music!

New batch: :)

Orbital - Halcyon + On + On

One of my top 10 fave songs ever made

William Orbit ft. Beth Orton - Water From a Vine Leaf

Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene 2

esp. the last 2/3 of this song is incredible! Hard to believe Oxygene was made in 1976 with few analogue synths

Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene 8

Underworld - Jumbo

Ulrich Schnauss - A Letter From Home

Curve - Horror Head

Toni Halliday's voice is just heavenly on this intense song

SPC ECO - For All Time

New band of Dean Garcia (1/2 of Curve); if you like Slowdive, MBV, Ride etc. don't miss this track!

FSOL - The Lovers

Ride - Vapour Trail

Some 80s drone-rock now

Spacemen 3 - Revolution

Spacemen 3 - Hypnotized

Spacemen 3 - Big City

Spiritualized - Anyway That You Want Me

Spectrum - How You Satisfy Me

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Skeletons

The music video is perfect for this surreal song

Tricky - Overcome

Vocal: Martina Topley-Bird

This is a strong contender for the best ethereal song

Goldfrapp - Pilots

Way Out West - The Gift

Very addictive!

Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia

This track has an ethereal vibe on it

@tonyttt31 / Jester: the vocal part is performed by Alison Goldfrapp on both songs (Orbital - Dwr Budr / Tricky - Pumpkin)

Here's some more..

Slowdive - Catch The Breeze

The Twilight Sad - And She Would Darken The Memory

A Place To Bury Strangers - In Your Heart
