Gavin Ryan Chart Commentary

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Singles

Brian McFadden holds for a third week at the No.1 spot on the ARIA

Singles Chart with his track "Just Say So" (DL: 1 hold), and last weeks

competition for trumping him has changed this week. Usher has jumped eight

places to No.2 with his latest track "OMG" (DL: 8 to 2, Phys: 2 to 6),

featuring Will.i.Am on guest vocals. This takes it close to its No.1 peak in

the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, and becomes his highest placed single since

the 19th of June, 2004 when "Burn" climbed to No.2 for a single week (after

sitting at No.3 for four weeks upon debut).

The other threat this week came in the form of quick-tourist Justin

Bieber (here for only a coupla days) who created hysteria in Sydney (his

only visiting city) when after canceling his scheduled live performance due

to girls being crushed and trampled, he performed on a breakfast TV program

with hundreds of screaming girls outside the studio windows, yes

Bieber-Fever has now hit Australia, taking his former No.6 single "Baby" (DL

9 to 4) up seven places to a new peak of No.3 this week, plus all of his

other track climb to new heights. "One Time" (DL: 40 to 22) had peaked at

No.27 in February, but is now up twelve spots to No.23. His guest vocals

contribution to Sean Kingstons "Eenie Meenie" (DL: 39 to 30) has helped it

climb to a new peak of No.29 (former HP-30). Plus he has five more singles

in the lower half of the chart, giving him EIGHT charting singles this week.

"Love Me" re-enters at No.65, "One Less Lonely Girl" is up thirteen places

to a new peak of No.68, "Kiss and Tell" re-enters at No.78, "Never Let You

Go" is up fourteen places to No.84 and a new entry for him at No.92 is

"Favorite Girl", all of which are on the new No.1 album in the country, you

guessed it, by Justin Bieber, "My Worlds (Oz Edition)", which I will talk

about later in the albums section.

Former No.1 single "Hey, Soul Sister" (DL: 3 hold) takes another single

step down the charts to No.4, and last weeks No.1 threat from Lady GaGa,

"Alejandro" (DL: 2 to 5) is down three places to No.5. Vanessa Amorosi

scores a second Top 10 single from her "Hazardous" album, as "Mr Mysterious"

(DL: 13 to 8) climbs seven places to No.6, and this is the first time since

2000 that she has scored two Top 10's from the one album. So with Vanessa

being the only top ten entrant, it pushes down B.o.B. with "Nothin' on You"

(DL: 4 to 6) to No.7, Adam Lambert tumbles down four places to land at No.8

with "Whataya Want from Me" (DL: 5 to 7, Phys: 23 debut), Richard Vission is

also down four places with "I Like That" (DL: 6 to 9) now at No.9, and

former chart-topper for Jason DeRulo, "In My Head" (DL: 7 to 10) is holding

on to the No.10 position.

NEW PEAKS: But if Jason DeRulo falls out of the Top 10 next week, there is a

new track of his to take its place, as "Ridin' Solo" (DL: 15 to 12) is up a

couple of places to No.13, and climbing six places to No.15 to score his

first Top 20 hit in Australia is Taio Cruz and his song "Break Your Heart"

(DL: 21 to 14). Last weeks highest new entry from Yolanda Be Cool, "We No

Speak Americano" (DL: 30 to 25) is up to a new peak of No.24, and every

other new peak within the Top 50 I have already mentioned, as they belong to

Justin Bieber.

When Ke$ha's debut album "Animal" (TW-30) was released back in January,

one track received enough early downloads to crack the DL Chart within the

Top 40, and this week the official third single from "Animal" (and that

early download track) is the highest new entry of the week. "Your Love is

the Drug" (DL: 23 debut) debuts at a respectable No.25, and could be on its

way to becoming her third Top 10 single after "Tik Tok" (No.1, TW-38) and

"Blah Blah Blah" (No.3, TW-31).

Close behind Ke$ha is another debut at No.27, Australian Idol 2009

winner Stan Walker with his second charting single "Unbroken" (DL: 29 debut,

Phys: 3 debut). His first single "Black Box" reached No.2 (TW-73), and has

gone double platinum in sales, and has now become the longest charting

Australian Idol single in it's history, now in its 23rd week in the Top 100.

At the Brit Awards in February, Florence + The Machine (Brit Award Best

Album winner 2009) performed their hit version of "You've Got the Love"

(DL"12 to 15) with Dizzee Rascal (Brit Award winner Best Male 2009), who

inter-rapped his version of "Dirtee Cash" into the song, thus creating a

mash-up called "You've Got the Dirtee Love" (DL: 31 debut), which this week

debuts at No.32, and peaked at No.2 in the UK Charts. This version will be

appearing on the upcoming re-issued Florence album "Lungs" (due May 21st).

The original version of Florence's "You've Got the Love" recently hit No.9,

and is down six places to No.18 this week.

The fourth Top 50 entry of the week is by local pop/dance artist Chris

Sorbello, and her track "So Lonely" (DL: 38 debut) debuts at No.39. Chris

grew up in Brisbane and is now based in Sydney, and signed to the Ministry

of Sound label. She has been doing live shows around the country and was a

part of the recent Supefest tour which featured Kelly Rowland, Eve, Pitbull,

Jay Sean, Sean Paul and DJ Nino Brown.

Below Top 50: All but one new peak below the Top 50 is from Justin Bieber

(mentioned above), and that comes from The Counting Crows who climb fifteen

places to No.81 with their track "Colourblind".

Sia debuts at No.51 with "Clap Your Hands", the second single off her

forthcoming fourth album due June 7th, "We Are Born". First single "You've

Changed" climbed to No.31 to become her highest charting single here, and

with the high entry of this new track, "Clap Your Hands" could possibly

eclipse her previous effort. Several other local acts also debut this week,

with rock group Amy Meredith coming in at No.58 with their latest "Lying"

(Phys: 1 debut). It already has surpassed the No.65 peak (Jan 2010) of their

first charting single "Pornstar". Triple J favorite Ernest Ellis scores his

ARIA Singles chart entry by scoring at No.72 debut with "Loveless", taken

from his June due album "Hunting". And Perth group Birds of Tokio have

scored their first ARIA Singles entry with their ninth single "The Saddest

Thing I Know" which debuts at No.66, and is taken from their

forthcoming/unnamed third album. Lastly Operator Please creep in at No.96

with "Back and Forth", the second single from their second album "Gloves"

which enters the album charts this week at No.20.

Iyaz hit No.1 in February with his first ARIA Singles chart entry

"Replay" (TW-33), and now he enters at No.62 with he new track entitled

"Solo". When Regina Spektor appeared on the finale of 'So You Think You Can

Dance', she performed the song "EET", which this week debuts at No.79, no

doubt also helped by her current national tour, and becomes her third Top

100 entry. The first new episode of Glee this year was screened on Channel

10 last Thursday (April 29th), and we should expect most of the songs with

"Hello" in the their titles to enter next week, but the main song of the

show does manage a No.83 entry this week, "Hello Goodbye", a cover of The

Beatles No.1 single from the first of 1968 (2 weeks at No.1).

The last new entry of the week at No.94 is "Hello Good Morning" by Diddy

(Sean Combs) featuring guest vocals from Dirty Money and T.I. and is the

first single from his late June due sixth album "Last Train to Paris". This

is the 24th charting single for Diddy/Puff Daddy/P.Diddy, and his first to

chart since late June of 2007 when he made it No.53 with "Last Night", a

duet with Keyshia Cole.

Albums

In an ARIA first, an album has leapt to the top of the charts from below

the Top 50, and that honor goes to recent whirlwind tourist Justin Bieber,

whose Australian Edition of his album "My Worlds" jumps from last weeks

debut of No.82 all the way to No.1. The last record holder for biggest leap

to the top was achieved two years ago by k.d. Lang and her album

"Watershed", which was also helped by her tour here at the time. Below is a

list of albums that have achieved great leaps to the top.

03-July-88|36 to 1| 88 Kix On| Various

25-Dec-89|re to 1| The Album| Jive Bunny| fell out from No.22 two weeks

previous

17-Oct-93|19 to 1| A Touch of Music in the Night| Michael Crawford

14-Dec-97|33 to 1| Bill Lawry. This is Your Life| Twelfth Man

18-Sep-00|11 to 1| Games of the XXVII Olympiad| Various

07-July-03|99 to 3| Hope| Hillsong Church

11-Feb-08|44 to 2| Thriller (25th Anniversary)| Michael Jackson

14-Apr-08|38 to 1| Watershed| k.d. Lang

06-July-09|re to 1| Essential Michael Jackson| Michael Jackson| fell out two

weeks earlier

Justin Bieber becomes only the third Canadian Male Solo artist to claim

a No.1 album in Australia (1965 to 2010), the other two being Michael Buble

(3 No.1's) and Bryan Adams (2 No.1's), and the eighth Canadian act overall

to score a No.1, with the 19th Canadian performed No.1 album. It's the 7th

'My' titled album to go to the top, the last being "Songs for My Mother"

(April 2009) by Ronan Keating, whilst it's only the sixth 'World' at the

top, the last being D-12's "D-12 World" from May 2004.

AC/DC were on track to duplicate their UK No.1 debut with the soundtrack

for "Iron Man 2", but have to settle for a No.2 entry this week. The album

features only AC/DC tracks from as old as "T.N.T" (1975) up to

"Thunderstruck" (1990) with a track from their last album "Black Ice" being

"War Machine" being the only recently recorded track on the album.

Two other Top 10 debuts this week, with the third album for Bullet for

My Valentine entitled "Fever" coming in at No.5, one place lower than their

2008 No.4 album "Scream, Aim, Fire". And right behind them at No.6 is Xavier

Rudd with his sixth album "Koonyum Sun", becoming his third Top 10 album,

and second No.6 album, as 2007's "White Moth" also landed at this position,

and only his 2008 set "Dark Shades of Blue" achieved anything higher,

reaching No.5.

With the TV series Glee back on our televisions here, the new round of

re-workings from the gang are about to start charting, only one so far this

week, but next week should see more singles entering. But next weeks episode

features all Madonna songs, which are found on the new entry at No.14 "Glee:

The Power of Madonna", which should rise in the next couple of weeks, plus

there is a third volume of music from the series being released at the end

of May. Volume 1 is at No.34 (LW-38) and Volume 2 is at No.36 (LW-44), so

this will probably rise too.

Meat Loaf's tenth studio album entitled "Hang Cool Teddy Bear" debuts at

No.16. Local act Operator Please take their second album into the charts at

No.20. Brian McFadden debuts at No.27 with his third album "Wall of Soundz"

featuring the current No.1 single in the country "Just Say So". Whilst lower

down there are entries from Kate Nash with "My Best Friend is You" at No.50,

Cypress Hill debut at No.57 with "Rise Up", and future tourist Paul Weller

enters at No.63 with "Wake Up the Nation".
