Posted May 8, 201015 yr So I'm thinking of re-starting my personal chart after I stopped doing them, due to struggling to keep up with it. But I was wondering how do people compile their charts? Do you simply put the songs in order of preference, or do you base it on plays? Do you have a points sytem? Popularity bars? If so, how do you calculate it? For the last two weeks I did my personal charts, I did a mix of both plays and preference. So if I had 40 songs in my chart, I would give 40 points to the song I like the most, and then my 2nd favourite song that week gets 39 points etc. etc. I would then have a seperate points system based on plays, and I would then combine the points. I prefered doing it like that, as it made it more unpredictable for myself. What about you?

Things taken into consideration for me are play counts, video, impact on me (if I've seen an artist live, expect their song to hit #1).. :D
May 8, 201015 yr My chart is a bit inaccurate because I decide on new entries before ordering the songs which leads to lots of new entries and short chart runs Nonetheless, I just pick out my favourite songs of the moment
May 8, 201015 yr I compile mine by new releases first. Then songs I've played a lot during the week and my favourites go top ten.
May 8, 201015 yr I select songs that didn't feature in my last chart and consider them as new entries and also exclude some if i feel so. Hence i could have Top 40 this week and Top 26 next time. I used to do Top 40 (was choosing new entries before ordering and swapping them with entries that were getting out and then arranged the order of the Top 40) but it got boring after 6 years. Then i switched to playlists, but i did want to keep record of my Top 3 songs of each week at least - so got back, but i don't use chart runs anymore, as they're SUPER time consuming! Oh and it doesn't depend on any world's releases, be it UK's, USA's or whatever's super-mega hit topping charts in every universe will not be automatically added to my list. I listen to albums most of the time during the week so usually my charts are flooded with album tracks! Edited May 8, 201015 yr by Ljósið
May 8, 201015 yr I have an iTunes playlist of my current chart (as posted here) called 'Current top 50 and breakers'. Throughout the week I add any new songs I've downloaded in the week that I think I might like enough to chart onto the playlist. Sometimes by the time I come to compile on Thursday I'll have as many as 85 songs on the playlist. I then decide which songs from last week I'm happy to get rid of. Usually it's about 15, so then I add 15 of the (up to) 35 'new' songs into my chart. The other 20 either stay on the 'bubbling under' list for another week if I think they have a possibility to chart in the future, or I delete them never to be seen again! I then simply just order these 50 songs that I'm left with in preference order. The new entries tend to filter in between 35-50 usually but if I really love a song it will debut in the top ten. A #1 debut is incredibly rare though, I think it's happened 5 times in the 11 year history of my chart.
May 8, 201015 yr Similar to Rich in a way. I have a playlist on Windows Media player which features my current chart, songs that have yet to chart but are quite old (EG. Rude Boy) and new songs I've downloaded during the week. On Sunday I order them all in terms of preference. The top 60 make my chart, the songs that have previously charted are deleted and all the remaining yet-to-chart songs are kept at the bottom incase they are able to enter the following week.

I used to have a 'chart' playlist, and all the songs I like, or am obsessed with, go in there. I then put them into order of preference as I go along, and when I come to make the chart I "freeze" it. I also keep track of the plays of that week, and then allocate points for the most played, and most 'liked' and finally combine them. Although from now on, I'm doing it just from preference, as it less time consuming. Also, I noticed in your personal chart, you have pop bars. Is that random based on how much you like a song? May 8, 201015 yr Yeah that happened to me. I done a personal chart here back in January. I stopped because it was crap it was just basically a bunch of Youtube videos because at the time I was virtually a new member. Then like 5 weeks ago I revamp after seeing other people's charts. Now my chart is hard work due to coursework and revision but it is really successful because it attracts people of different music tastes. My chart is also different due to the layout. I really don't like copying other people. I like to do my own thing and hopefully be a trendsetter. Also, my chart is based on music what I like at the moment which I know people love instantly. In the chart, a song can stay for forever if I like it still or just a week. It depends really. Edited May 8, 201015 yr by TactiX

In the chart, a song can stay for forever if I like it still or just a week. It depends really. I understand this completely, I stopped because it took me forever to get my chart the way I wanted it, and it had a complex layout. On top of shcool work, I couldn't keep up. Hopefully now, if I'm more organised, and having now simplified my layout and how I compile my chart, I will be able to keep up. Also starting from scatch again means I can now keep a record of my chart, the chart runs and the layout, so it shouldn't be too much of a chore. I find it very interesting the different methods people have.
May 8, 201015 yr First I look at play count for the week. Then I change around any necessary songs that should be higher due to 'interest'. Interest is mostly if a song has a video/single release... the impact of that will usually move it up the chart. Some songs in my chart have no plays at all so interest (radio, chart, youtube) comes into it. So in conclusion, a bit of plays a bit of like comes into my chart. For my end of year one, every week I give points depending on Songs position and I add it up. The results give me a general guide what my favourite Songs of the Year have been. May 9, 201015 yr Also, I noticed in your personal chart, you have pop bars. Is that random based on how much you like a song? Yep it's based on how much I like the song. So if my #1 has double the pop bar of #2 (which is pretty rare), you can assume that I like the track twice as much as #2.
May 9, 201015 yr I might need to start a "current chart play-list", this method seems interesting :o Normally, I think of a few songs that need to be new entries (last week, this ended up with my entire top 5 being new entries), then I decide which songs will be leaving my chart, then arrange the songs that are staying with the new entries in order of preference/how much I've heard them during the week. I often have a lot of debut #1s and one week #1s, which I'm not liking :( My longest #1 so far is 4 non-consecutive weeks, longest consecutive #1 is 2 weeks. And two major exceptions to the debut at #1 thing - Owl City's "Fireflies" took 12 weeks to get to #1, and Marina's "Hollywood" took 10.
May 9, 201015 yr My chart is basically what good music is around, I try not to chart a lot of American artists, and I hardly post chart stuff from the official charts. I usually dig around through other personal charts on here and see what attracts me, around 75% of it, is mainly Indie/alternative music. Its mainly on taste what I like.
May 9, 201015 yr Usually from what I'm playing most throughout the week and what I'm liking, my taste is really mainstream tbh so thats why my chart probably looks like the real one  Can be biased sometimes towards my favourite artists but it is my chart :P

May 23, 201015 yr I use a whiteboard to plan, and I write down the songs that I am clear where I want them to chart first, and then I do the others and other new entries at the same time. My chart is a little bit different as well due to the layout and features however it is late at the moment due to revision!
May 23, 201015 yr Basically it's the order of preference over the past 7 days for me. I get influence from all over though, Virgin On Demand, Radio, TV, and the biggest infleunce - work, hence entries like The National and The Dead Weather who wouldn't have had a sniff of my chart otherwise. I'd probably expect Agnes, The Baseballs, and Katie Melua to clamber up next week if the albums play at work.
