May 19, 201015 yr I read about Patrick Wolf wanting to submit a song, but completely missed the Katie Melua story :drama: Patrick Wolf?!?! :o That would've been amazing! Edited May 19, 201015 yr by Cal

May 19, 201015 yr According to thisispop, Katie's 'people' approached the BBC to ask if they wanted The Flood for Eurovision, but they refused :( I haven't seen a source to prove this but I can't imagine he made it up.
May 19, 201015 yr Author What the hell? We could have had a Guy Chambers song with a European star representing us in Eurovision, rather than an 80s hasbeen song by a never-will-be? :drama: It's really time that the BBC dumped the contest and gave it to ITV or Channel 4, some channel that knows what's going on in the world of music... They should have lost it the second they dropped Top Of The Pops :arr: Pride comes before a fall btw Jerick :kink:
May 19, 201015 yr Sounds about right, but how many people can really have voted? I didn't bother voting and I always vote in anything Eurovision related! I just didn't care who was singing it, full stop. Josh was clearly the best choice but I didn't feel like wasting money to support him. It must have cost more to hold rehearsals, organise and stage the show than the costs they recouped surely? It would have been a lot easier and cheaper to accept Katie's offer, or maybe she was too expensive for them, she certainly looks like the type of woman that could drive a hard bargain to get a good deal for herself :heehee: I imagine with 2 rounds of voting they probably got somewhere between 100K and 300K votes... I somehow doubt they held more than one rehearsal, given the absolute travesty of a national final that it was. Plus, whacking something into a studio with studio audience (did they pay for tickets or was it free? I forget...) doesn't really cost that much.

May 19, 201015 yr Grief. I'm now convinced the BBC are trying not to win as they don't want to foot the bill for hosting. I agree with Tom, ITV or Channel 4 need to take over.

May 19, 201015 yr Katie Melua wanted to enter with "The Flood"? :o In the moment the BBC turned it down, they threw away the chance of it being London 2011  Well, it would probably be 2nd in my rankings, behind Germany still :kink: What the hell? We could have had a Guy Chambers song with a European star representing us in Eurovision, rather than an 80s hasbeen song by a never-will-be? :drama: It's really time that the BBC dumped the contest and gave it to ITV or Channel 4, some channel that knows what's going on in the world of music... They should have lost it the second they dropped Top Of The Pops :arr: I wouldn't mind if ITV took it - with Channel 4, I'm not sure what the ratings would be like. To me, Channel 4 never really seems to get big ratings. Just as long as the BBC don't withdraw and no one picks it up :drama: But if ITV can get nearly 20million viewers for the BGT final, I'm sure they could do a good job of Eurovision ^_^
May 19, 201015 yr From Portugal I loved the 1992-1995 entries. Dina, Anabela, Sara Tavares and Dulce Pontes. I think that was our best period tbh

May 19, 201015 yr Pride comes before a fall btw Jerick :kink: Time will show :P Anyway, Norway have had a fall since.. like.. ever  with the most 0's and last place in history of ESC :P

Unless, of course, it was Channel 5. It's Eurovision, most people watch it if it's on and not clashing with something else... I wouldn't get too pissed off about not sending The Flood. Granted, it would've been an amazing entry, but it's nowhere near instant enough on first listen to be a contender for victory for an AQer, I don't think.
May 19, 201015 yr Oh whoops. It's been a while since I was a Patrick Wolf stan and remembered the name of his albums :drama: To be fair, he did change his release plans about a dozen times for his last album  Wasn't it meant to be a double disc affair called Battle originally?

Channel 4 just seems to get lower ratings than the BBC & ITV generally. If Channel 4 had it, both the BBC & ITV could have some big show on at the same time. If the BBC or ITV have it, they only have the other to compete with, mainly. I think "The Flood" could've come anywhere from 6th to about 15th, perhaps. Certainly higher than Josh, and the British could definitely have been more prouder of "The Flood".

Mainly because they don't have many truly big-ticket shows - but Big Brother consistently gets the highest ratings of the night on the final night, so I don't see why the Eurovision final would be any different really.
May 19, 201015 yr Why was this closed? There was plenty of discussion going on and it's a valid topic which a lot of people won't have had the chance to respond to yet :o

Agreed - regardless of its potential I would have been far happier had we been sending The Flood to represent us than That Sounds Good To Me. I fail to see how the latter bears any resemblance to the music currently popular in the UK and thus worthy to represent us. Mind you the same could be said about any one of our noughties entries :( the last contemporary at the time entry was probably Say It Again in 1999.
