July 10, 200619 yr Didn't Abba have a single released in 1973 which flopped? Prior to Waterloo, of course. I'm sure there will be more... Yes it was Ring Ring which was re-issued after Waterloo & reached #32
July 10, 200619 yr In 1964 - Sandie Shaw - First single was As Long As You're Happy Baby - flopped. Tom Jones first single CHILLS & FEVER flopped. Also in the 60s Jackie Trent had a few flop singles before she topped the charts in 1965 with WHERE ARE YOU NOW MY LOVE. Same with Long John Baldry. In 1969 Peter Sarstedt's second single - WHERE DO YOU GO TO MY LOVELY was a massive number one but his first single I AM A CATHEDRAL flopped. Rod Stewart had a few flop singles before his first hit Maggie May reached #1. This was originally the B-Side of Reason To Believe. Donny Osmond had 3 flops before his first solo hit Puppy Love reached #1. Suzi Quatro's first single ROLLING STONE flopped before her second - Can The Can - hit #1. July 10, 200619 yr well done charter! Rod Stewart was the one I was trying to think of before! He had many singles before Reason To Believe / Maggie May.
July 10, 200619 yr she did the celts and clan nads The Celts didn't chart though when first released did it as "Enya"?
July 10, 200619 yr I could be wrong... but didn't Ace of Base have a flop single before releasing All That She Wants?
July 11, 200619 yr Author I thought the question was about acts who had their first hit with a #1, but had previous singles that missed the charts. Some of the songs mentioned here are the same song, but one that missed the top 75 first time around. Which is not the same thing! For example, 9pm by ATB was released twice before it reached #1. Each time it missed the top 75. Eventually it reached #1. It's not the same as ATB having a previous single that didn't chart. (which happpened anyway!) ATB's first hit was a vinyl-only version of 9pm (Till I Come) which reached #68 in March 1999. Interesting it later charted on 2 import versions (peaking at #47 and #63), and on 19/6/99, both versions were on the chart (one at #63, one at #55) - which I thought was against the rules...
