June 6, 201015 yr I voted for Satellte last Saturday and I can assure you that my vote had nothing to do with Germany's current economic policies and political standing in Europe, moreso because it's my favourite song of the year. Just because you don't like a song, doesn't mean that nobody else does... Aside from the aformentioned fact that it's #1 in nearly every European country at the moment, it even entered the Australian top 40 this week, the first Eurovision top 40 hit there in 23 years, what exactly is the explanation for that other than people liking the song?
June 6, 201015 yr Wow, no one since Johnny Logan broke into the Aussie Charts...??!! Respect Lena, respect...!!!
June 6, 201015 yr Satellite was NOT doing well in Europe before contest, only a hit in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, and the latter doesn't even participate.
June 6, 201015 yr even though it sounds like it was conjured up in the mind of a backward eight year old? Yes, probably the, ahem, stellar quality of the song definitely earned it them points and it winning had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the billions Germany are doling out to other European country right now      In other words.... WAKE UP! There's a bit of a difference between voting for a song because the country it's from can afford to host the next year's contest and actually BUYING the track and requesting it on airplay, hence topping charts around the continent! Thereby demonstrating that people around Europe do actually like the track... And Russ, knowing your opinions on a lot of pop music these days - since when was sounding like it was conjured up in the mind of a backward eight year old a barrier to popularity?
June 6, 201015 yr Satellite was NOT doing well in Europe before contest, only a hit in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, and the latter doesn't even participate. A few days before and up to the contest it was top ten on iTunes in Sweden and Norway and top 100 in a lot of others. Plus I've heard from other sources that it was already a radio hit in places like Slovakia and other parts of Eastern Europe before the contest. So it was definitely starting to spread (although the hype of the contest week will have helped it no end of course).
June 6, 201015 yr Dré, according to your flag I guess you're from Uzbekistan. How would you explain the fact that Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan as "Ex-USSR states" (and even Israel) are taking part on the ESC but not your country although it was also part of the USSR...?!! Another question would be for me why Scotland and Wales aren't making an own ESC song instead of swallowing what the "English BBC" gives them?! Edited June 6, 201015 yr by boys allowed
June 6, 201015 yr I'm not from Uzbekistan, I just didn't bother to change the flag back. I'm from Portugal.
June 6, 201015 yr I'm not from Uzbekistan, I just didn't bother to change the flag back. I'm from Portugal. Haha, alright then.

Well if it was like in Portugal, probably eurovision being advertised, and maybe Lena got some exposure. It definitely didn't actually chart anywhere else until this week. I don't believe it won because it was already an established hit.
June 6, 201015 yr Russ = Your ignorant posts on this subject of a song that has gone Top 10 in every country in Europe bar the UK & France is on an arrogance on a par with Pete Waterman. I suppose you agree as well with Pete Waterman that the reason the UK came last was because they have elected a Conservative eurosceptic Goverment which makes us unpopular with Europe; and not because in a tweet this week by Graham Norton we sent a song that belonged to a PWL shelf "filed: Jason Donovan rejects (1988)". FUKKIN' PRAT! And Richard - you actually SUPPORTING a song that, well, even a bright ten year old would balk at, is mortifying. Ignorance about this subject? Excuse me? You self aggrandising, condescending prat..... I watched the show, and myself and everyone else in the room laughed our heads off when the winner was announced..... because, even before hearing the song on the night, the bet in the room was, yep, Germany are gonna win this one. Are you honestly THAT naive that you believe the Eurovision Song Contest is actually about SONGS? I mean, come on, Richard, grow up. And you're like a child with OCD with your reliance on chart figures to support any argument you offer. Richard - a number one single is never ever ever a signal of quality, and the very fact this loathesome song has gone "top 10 in every country in Europe bar the UK and France' (I quote) is surely indication enough that it's CRAP. Not that it's good    Then again, maybe as a fan of Lily Allen, you probably find lyrics like these deeply thought provoking and life-changing.... "I went everywhere for you I even did my hair for you I bought new underwear, they’re blue And I wore ‘em just the other day ....Cupid’s arrow is just for you I even painted my toe nails for you I did it just the other day" Pete Waterman's a national embarrassment whose best days were in 1983 and 1984.... him and his laughable song totally deserved last place - but of course, a good song or a bad song is irrelevant - if we'd sent Cheryl Cole and Robbie Williams duetting on a song written by Cathy Dennis and Xenomania - we'd STILL have come last.

That last thing just isn't right! Cheryl or Rob could sing what they want they would still reach a decent rank (it's all about popularity)!!
June 6, 201015 yr But of course, a good song or a bad song is irrelevant - if we'd sent Cheryl Cole and Robbie Williams duetting on a song written by Cathy Dennis and Xenomania - we'd STILL have come last. Erm, really? We managed to come fifth off a pretty dated track by Andrew Lloyd-Webber last year, so I somehow doubt sending two huge European stars with a track that would pretty likely be amazing from those songwriting credentials would come last...
June 6, 201015 yr The UK managed to finish 5th last year with a nobody singing a cliched ballad so I seriously doubt Cheryl Cole or/and Robbie would have come anywhere near last.

Not that it's good    I don't think the argument was over the quality of the song, but whether or not it won just because Germany were bailing out Europe. Regardless of what you think of the track, surely its popularity shows that it won on its own merits?
June 6, 201015 yr Are you talking about the jury 'only' when you say "just won because Germany were bailing out Europe"?! Because I don't think that telephone voters voted for Germany when they didn't like it... Edited June 6, 201015 yr by boys allowed
June 6, 201015 yr I only got into the EV spirit last year because we had a truly fantastic song that everyone was talking about. This year's entry for the UK was horrendous and a huge comedown. I really believed that they'd up their game after Jade's success but it was such a major step backwards... That's why I didn't tune in this year. [that and not having a TV in my room :heehee:]
June 6, 201015 yr Robbie is more popular in Europe than he is in the UK. He could represent the UK burping to a dance beat for three minutes (no, this wasn't a bonus track on 'Rudebox' :P ) and he wouldn't come last. I'd really be interested in seeing an established artist from the UK representing us just to see what the outcome would be. If we had Amy Macdonald represent the UK and we came last, then I might question this because Amy is like Robbie - far more popular in Europe than the UK.

Why don't you do this site a favour and f*** OFF instead of talking complete and utter bolloxs. Using your logic, then the crappiest band of all time is The Beatles; and the crappiest act right now in the world is Lady GaGa. Oh and therefore Jobrieth must be better than David Bowie because he sold a lot less records. Oh, and if you had bothered to read other threads on this site or in this forum, you would know that I don't actually like the song that won as it sounds like a Katy Brand parody of Lily Allen & Kate Nash. But from the draw for the Final; the fact it sounded very different to any other song in the contest; and its popularity across Europe then it was fairly obvious it was going to do well (even though I personally expected it to finish 4th). But if you think (like Pete Waterman) that Germany won purely on the basis that the country was bailing out Europe then you are a complete and utter moron who should be reading the Daily Mail.

Pretty much what the single Rudebox was then. And where did Rudebox reach in the German charts? #1... If we sent Robbie, 12 from Germany would be almost certainly guaranteed, let alone even thinking about any of the other nations points. I'd be shocked if he failed to go top ten - last place just wouldn't be conceivable.

Which is why had the BBC taken up Katie Melua's offer and sent the subsequent hit all over Europe "The Flood" we would have easily finished Top 10 (and probably Top 5). Although no doubt Russ living in cloud cuckoo land would think we would have finished last because everybody hates the UK don't they especially now we've elected a Conservative Government?
