BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

I thought he said: son of a terrorist
It could be anything tbh, all the things that have been said so far are all just rumours and all round school there are different rumours like "You're mum's an Alregiran whore" etc, its just like the frosties kid one were he he was dead; loads of differetn rumours were flying around the odds but none of them were right.

In that case his reaction is understandable given the fact his mother is seriously ill in hospital, he still should have beaten him up in the tunnel or after the final whistle but if my mum was seriously ill and someone made a derogatory comment towards her I have no doubt I would deck them on the spot so I sympathise with Zidane
Zidane also said that Materazzi repeated whatever he said three times which makes all of these "expert" lip-reader theories a load of shít as none of them got that did they
