UK Top 40 Singles - w/e 11 Jun 1983

1. Police - Every Breath You Take  ok, Sting's a prat, but this record's sublime.

3. Yazoo - Nobody's Diary    Yazoo's last single when they were together... nottheir greatest, but still pretty phenomenal

4. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Buffalo Soldier  Again not his greatest, but still a fine record

8. David Bowie - China Girl  The best single from Let's Dance...and a cracking video, too.... and love the lyrics for this one

10. Beat - Can't Get Used To Losing You - they did far better singles, but this was a nice cover version.

13. Style Council - Money Go Round (Pt 1) - much maligned, but SC made some superb singles - this is one of their best

14. Heaven 17 - Temptation    Just an all-time classic that sounds great even now

17. Big Country - In A Big Country - loved this, hated the band though

18. Elton John - I Guess That's Why That Call It The Blues - aww...nice track, schmaltzy but nice, like 99% of Elton's stuff

19. Rod Stewart - Baby Jane - ok, lampoon me - but this was a great single

23. Fun Boy Three - Our Lips Are Sealed    one of the greatest cover versions - EVER. Brilliant.

27. H20 - Dream To Sleep - long forgotten, but this was a pretty good single

29. Imposter (Elvis Costello) - Pills & Soap - Costello treading water is still most artist's best of... the master, really.

31. Altered Images - Bring Me Closer     where Ms Grogan vamped it up as a Bond girll in the fab video - undoubtedly Altered Images finest moment by miles.... and the album it came from, 'Bite' was pretty splendid, too. Best song on the chart.

35. Blancmange - Blind Vision    2nd best song on the chart - just brilliant.

37. Agnetha Faltskog - The Heat Is On - not Ms Faltskog's shining moment, but a passable single from her 'Wrap Your Arms Around Me' album which, in all fairness, isn't half bad.

38. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'  yeeehaaa! Still sounds fabulous, this....

I clearly remember listening to this chart, i was outside my aunties in exeter with a little t*****

 great double entendre !

7. Joboxers - Just Got Lucky - Not bad.

I think “Just Got Lucky” is a great song and it is a pity that style of group seemed to fade out towards the mid 1980s. I think they may have released another album in about 1985 but by then they would have been ‘out of fashion’.

I would actually list The Joboxers as being in the same category as Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Animal Nightlife and The Beat. In regards to The Beat, I would have been too young to know “Mirror In The Bathroom” the first time around and therefore, would not necessarily think of them as being a Ska band.

I would have initially known The Beat through liking the records of the Fine Young Cannibals and I would say that FYC started out with a development of that ‘Joboxers sound’ on their single “Johnny Come Home”. I guess that General Public would also sound similar to FYC though I cannot remember how any of their records went [however, I remember that their single was also called “General Public” and they were a duo].

The Joboxers were mentioned on one of the radio shows I was listening to the other week, as the presenter had gone to a ‘Guilty Pleasures’ night which was promoted by somebody who used to be in the band. I cannot remember if it was the singer or the guitarist, but I think after The Joboxers the promoter may have formed a late 1980s indie-dance band called IF [though this band could have been called 28IF after the registration number of the car on the Abbey Road album].

I remember reading an interview with the guy who compiled all the ‘Guilty Pleasures’ albums and he said that he started a radio show in London playing all these awfully cheesy records as this indie-dance band had been a commercial failure. Rather than being a massive international hit like Jesus Jones or EMF, his band had as much success as Slow Bongo Floyd, Nixon and The Apples [who I think had something to do with Win of “We’ve Got The Power” advert fame], all of which could be contenders for a ‘Guilty Pleasures’ night by now.

Nevertheless, whoever may have invented ‘Guilty Pleasures’ I just hope they are not playing “Just Got Lucky” as I think it is a record that should be respected as much as records by The Beat and The Style Council [“Speak Like A Child”] are to this day.

Loz

Not great. I only really like 1, 14, 16, 29 and 37, and 5/40 is pretty low for me on a retro chart.

I don't know some of the tracks that I may like, though, such as the Altered Images one.

I actually have the complete Radio 1 show introduced by Tommy Vance (Sunday 12 June 1983) in my collection. A cracking chart in my view, brings back a lot of great memories.....
