Posted June 12, 201015 yr Last week's chart saw 25 of the 40 positions occupied through downloads alone with nine of the top 10 having no physicals sold during the week, I predict we'll see the first all download top 10 before the end of the year and the first ever physical free top 40 (discounting the official download chart) within four years. But how could we even *tell* if none of the T40 sold even one CD?
June 12, 201015 yr I dont think weve ever had a vinyl free top 40, 20 years after they were sopposed to have been killed off, so i'll doubt well ever have a cd free top 40.

Sorry, I'm a teenager. I'm thinking it's like records, but surely they're not still contributing to the top 40! :o Edited June 12, 201015 yr by Eric_Blob
June 12, 201015 yr Why shouldn't they contribute? One sold vinyl copy is counted as 1 sale like other sales. :) Cassettes also contritube although I read somewhere that there are less then 10 cassettes sold in a week now.

I wasn't saying that they shouldn't contribute, I meant to say that I'm surprised that they do contribute (i.e. I'm surprised that people still buy them/that they're getting sold). But we've never had a vinyl free top 40? I'm still not 100% sure what vinyls are, but what songs in last week's top 40 had vinyl sales?
June 12, 201015 yr Eric, I read somewhere that in US the sales of vinyls are actually increasing which is very paradoxical in the download era. As for artists in the top-40 - I think some dance singles are still sold on vinyls eh? ))) I'm not sure about it though. http://www.soultunes.co.uk/images/photos/vinyl-default.gif Edited June 12, 201015 yr by Arrs

June 13, 201015 yr I don't think they are manufactured I think it's more about buying the old ones which are lying somewhere in the corners of some shops.
June 13, 201015 yr Although Vinyls still sell i think it is definitely possible that we have had a vinyl-less Top 40, but I don't see that happening with CDs for about 20/30 years when all the artists that had a fanbase willing to buy physicals either won't be around any more or won't sell enough to get Top 40.
June 18, 201015 yr Author 28 out of last week's top 40 were out on just downloads, we could have an all download top 40 soon enough.
