Singles

Katy Perry and her candy-gams (see the video clip) jump up two places to

claim the new No.1 single on the ARIA Chart with "California Gurls" (DL: 3

to 1), featuring Snoop Dogg on guest vocals. It's both Katy's and Snoop's

second No.1 single, with Katy having previously hit the top with her first

single "I Kissed a Girl" (6 weeks, July 2008) , and Snoop Dogg had his first

No.1 with "Signs" (feat Justin Timberlake, 2 weeks, May 2005).

"California Gurls" is the 965th No.1 single in Australia (1940-2010),

and the first for Capitol Records since Katy's last chart-topper almost two

years ago. It's their 53rd No.1 since first hitting the top with a Johnny

Mercer track in August 1946, and the first for EMI since David Guetta's

"Sexy Bitch" hit the top in August of 2009. It's also the first time that

the words 'California' and the mis-spelt 'Gurls' have been in a No.1 song,

with the originally titled "California Girls" by The Beach Boys only

managing to peak at No.58 here in late September of 1965, and the cover by

David Lee Roth making it to No.6 in March of 1985. The highest previous

"California' song came from 2Pac in April 1996 when "California Love"

reached No.4, whilst other Top 10 'Californians have been 2001's "Miss

California" (HP-5) by Dante Thomas and "Dani California" (HP-8) by Red Hot

Chili Peppers in 2006.

So after six weeks at the top, Usher's "OMG" (DL: 1 to 2, Phys: 3 to 4)

drops back to No.2, pushing B.o.B. and Hayley Williams with "Airplanes" (DL:

2 to 3) down to No.3 after four weeks circling at the No.2 position. Yolanda

Be Cool feat DCup are back up to No.4 for a third non-consecutive week with

"We No Speak Americano" (DL: 5 to 4), and also up a single place, to a new

peak of No.5, is David Guetta and "Gettin' Over You" (DL: 6 to 5), giving

former Top 5 stalwarts Fergie and Will.i.Am. from The Black Eyed Peas

simultaneous Top 5 appearances.

After peaking at No.4 last week, Jason DeRulo rides down two places to

No. 6 with "Ridin' Solo" (DL: 4 to 6), whilst former No.2 single for Taio

Cruz "Break Your Heart" (DL: 7 to 8) stays stable at No.7. Travie McCoy

releases his debut solo album "Lazarus" this coming week, and the lead

single from the album "Billionaire" (DL: 9 to 7) rises a place to a new peak

of No.8, swapping places with Ke$ha and "My Love is Your Drug" (DL: 8 to 9,

Phys: 5 hold) now down to No.9. And returning to the Top 10 for a second

week (previously peaking at No.4) is Eminem's "Not Afraid" (DL: 12 to 10),

ahead of his new album released this week, "Recovery".

NEW PEAKS: Enrique Iglesias is set to have his first Top 10 single since

"Don't Turn Off the Lights" (HP-8, August 2002), as his new track "I Like

it" (DL: 15 to 11) is up three places to a new peak of No.11. 3OH!3 and

Ke$ha are up a couple of places to No.17 with "My First Kiss" (DL: 19 to

17), and scoring their first Top 20 single in Australia is English lads

Scouting for Girls with "This Ain't a Love Song" (DL: 21 to 18, Phys: 20 to

23), which is up to No.19 this week. Rihanna's "Te Amo" (DL: 28 to 20) and

Uncle Crackers "Smile" (DL: 34 to 26) are both up eight places to No.22 and

No.28 respectively, whilst the biggest overall leap in the Top 100 this week

comes from the Glee gang once again, as their recent Lady GaGa edition makes

inroads on the charts, with their version of "Poker Face" (as a ballad-esque

mother-daughter duet) (DL: 24 debut) leaps up seventy-two places to No.25.

Paramore again climb to a new peak with "The Only Expection" (DL: 30 to 28),

up to No.31 this week. Last weeks debut from Justin Bieber, "Never Say

Never" (DL: 43 to 34) is up seven places to No.38, and the second biggest

jump of the week goes to Perth group Gyroscope, who are up forty-eight

places to No.48 with "Baby, I'm Gettin' Better".

Kylie Minogue scores the highest new entry of the week, as the first

single off her forthcoming "Aphrodite" album (due in July) entitled "All the

Lovers" (DL: 13 debut) debuts at No.14. It becomes Kylie's 46th charting

single in Australia, and her first since "In My Arms" made it to No.35 in

May 2008. It's the first time since 1997 that the lead single from a Kylie

album hasn't debuted at the No.1 position, with the lead track from her past

four studio albums all going to No.1 in their first week. "Spinning Around"

(June 2000), "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (Sept 2001), "Slow" (Nov 2003)

and "2 Hearts" (Nov 2007) all landed at the top, but this single could be

the difference and actually climb to the top, as the physical single is out

next week to help it along.

Brian McFadden also scores a Top 20 entry this week, by debuting at

No.18 with the second single from his "Wall of Soundz" (No.82 this week)

album entitled "Chemical Rush" (DL: 36 debut). It lands only five places

above his current single, the former No.1 "Just Say So" (DL: 23 to 21),

which is stable at No.23 this week.

With the 2010 World Cup kicking off in South Africa last week, two

soccer themed songs debut in the Top 100 this week. The first is the

official theme "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" (DL: 37 debut, Phys: 23 to

6) by Shakira and featuring backing vocals by FreshlyGround, it debuts at

No.39. It's Shakira's first appearance in the Top 100 this year, having last

charted in August 2009 with the No.18 single "She Wolf". The other soccer

themed song comes from Canadian rapper K'Naan, who enters at No.71 with

"Wavin' Flag". This song was originally released overseas in 2009, but a new

'Celebration Mix' has been recorded, the international version featuring

guest appearances from David Guetta and Will.i.Am, plus there have been

thirteen versions recorded for different countries around the world from

Brazil, China, France, Greece, Japan, Nigeria, Spain and Latin America

amongst them.

BELOW Top 50: The Glee Cast re-enters at No.51 and scores a new peak with

their version of "Bad Romance". Train's new single "If it's Love" is up

twenty-two places to land at No.54 this week. Kelly Rowland is up to a new

peak of No.61 with "Commander", and Tinie Tempah climbs sixteen places to

land at No.70 with "Pass Out". Mention must also go to the oldest song in

the countdown, the 91 week running "Poker Face", which thanks to the recent

Glee episode, is up twenty places to No.73 this week.

Adam Lambert's second chart entry debuts at No.57, "If I Had You". His

first single "Whataya Want from Me" climbed to No.4 at the end of April, and

with radio all over this new track, expect it to climb from here next week.

Another gay artist is right behind Adam, debuting at No.58 with his first

solo single is Bloc Party lead singer Kele (Kelechukwu "Kele" Rowland

Okereke), and the track "Tenderoni", which is taken from his forthcoming

debut album "The Boxer" which is out this week through Shock Records.

Melbourne group Children Collide score their first Top 100 ARIA Singles

entry with their fifth single "Jellylegs", which debuts at No.72. Another

local group debuting, this time from Sydney, are Thirsty Merc, who enter at

No.83 with "Mousetrap Heart", the album of the same name is also out this

week. It's their first chart appearance since September 2007's "The Hard

Way" made it to No.63, and becomes their ninth charting single overall.

The tenth charting single for RnB singer Ne-Yo debuts at No.98, entitled

"Beautiful Monster", it's the lead track from forthcoming forth album Libra

Scale which is due in September. Ne-Yo solo was last on the charts in March

2009 with "Mad" (HP-82), but also lent his vocals to "Knock You Down" by

Keri Hilson (HP-24, June 2009) and "Baby By Me" for 50 Cent (HP-24, Nov

2009).

Glee Report: With no show on last week due to the Hamish & Andy special,

songs from the previous episode (the Lady GaGa/Kiss edition) make charges up

the chart. As I mentioned earlier, they gang score the highest climbing

track of the week as their version of "Poker Face" is up seventy-two places

to No.25. Former Top 10 track "Jessie's Girl" is again down this week,

dropping fourteen places to No.30. They re-enter at No.51 with "Bad

Romance", previously peaking at No.83, and debut at No.87 with their version

of the Kiss track "Beth" (HP-79, October 1976), done A Capella style this

time.

Albums

Back in 2007, Crowded House made a comeback to the album charts by

debuting at No.2 (and the following week climbing to No.1) with the album

"Time on Earth" (July 2007). This week though they go straight in at No.1

with their fifth chart-topping album "Intriguer". It's the group's sixth

studio album, and second since their comeback, and it now takes their tally

of weeks spent at the top of the Australian charts to 14 weeks, one week shy

of Neil's first groups tally, as Split Enz accumulated fifteen weeks at the

top with their three No.1 albums in the early 1980's.

"Intriguer" becomes the 615th No.1 album in Australia (1965-2010), and

the ninth by a New Zealand act. In fact the only NZ acts to have hit No.1

have all come from the same stable, with Split Enz, Neil Finn and Crowded

House being the only Tasman neighbors to have topped our charts here. No

surprise also that the word 'Intriguer' or its derivative of 'intrigue' has

never appeared in a No.1 album before.

Crowded House album history:

28-July-86|01|107a| Crowded House (1 week at No.1)

24-July-88|01|41| Temple of Low Men (1 week at No.1)

21-July-91|02|66| Woodface (2 weeks at No.2)

14-Nov-93|02|33a| Together Alone (1 week at No.2)

21-July-96|01|168*| Recurring Dream-The Very Best of (10 weeks broken at

No.1, 4 initially upon debut, the other six over the Xmas period)

06-Dec-99|36|05| After Glow (Rarities album)

27-Nov-06|43|08| Farewell to the World (Live album)

09-July-07|01|19a| Time on Earth (1 week at No.1)

With Crowded House landing at the top, it pushes last weeks top-end

debuts downwards, with Jack Johnson's "To the Sea" falling to No.2, the

"Twilight: Eclipse" album down to No.3, and Christina Aguilera's "Bionic"

falling two places to No.5. But in the middle of them all, the "Glee Volume

3" album stays put at No.4, which also helps the Lady GaGa album "The Fame

Monster" to rise back up three places to No.6 this week. After Usher's big

tumble last week, his "Raymond v Raymond" album climbs back up one place to

No.7, but his 'find' Justin Bieber is down three places to No.8 with his "My

Worlds" album. Rounding out the top ten is k.d. Lang's "Recollections" set

at No.10, down from last weeks number six position.

The other Top 10 debut is the seventh studio album for the UK duo The

Chemical Brothers. Their new album "Further" lands at No.9 to become their

fifth Top 10 entry in Australia. Lead single from the album is the track

"Swoon" and "Escape Velocity", and below is the groups chart efforts here in

Australia

Another act who is debuting with their seventh album, is Canadian siren

Sarah McLachlan, who enters at No.12 with "Laws of Illusion". It also

becomes her highest charting album here too, surpassing the No.22 peak of

her 2004 album "Afterglow", and this only her third Top 50 entry here in

Australia.

Sarah McLachlan album history:

Mark Vincent's recent appearance on the Australia's Got Talent finals

has helped his current and first album to surge back up the charts. His

recent "Compass" is up sixty-four places to No.21, and his first album "My

Dream - Mio Visione" is up thirty-two places to No.50. The DVD for "Alvin

and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" was released at the start of May, and

that has helped the soundtrack to rebound up twenty places this week to

No.36. On June 16th, Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) started his first tour of

Australia in 36 years, and his recent album has been repackaged, thus

"Roadsinger (to Warm you Through the Night) re-enters at No.42, whilst the

"Remember Cat Stevens" compilation is sitting at No.24 this week.

Other new album entries lower in the Top 100 come from US indie act The

Drums with their self-titled debut album which enters at No.52. Oasis debut

at No.68 with the compilation album "Time Flies. 1994 to 2009", and sneaking

in at No.91 is "Listen Up! The 2010 Official FIFA World Cup Album".

:w00t: Katy @ 1  Glad to see Travie, 3Oh!3 and Shakira doing well, but Cody needs to p*** off ASAP, and Austrailia need to support their homegrown artists like Kylie - 14 is dissapointing :(
