February 5, 201114 yr a lot of the rock hits from last year underperformed, Maroon 5, Manic Street Preachers, Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance to name a few- and I'm pretty sure there was more, why? well, rock is severely declining in the market, so that didn't help them, also they were pretty weak songs by their standards (which is huge as I actually still liked them all  ) LP and MCR both suffered from having absolutely brilliant lead singles last time round. "Welcome to the Black Parade" got to #1 so I guess "Na Na Na" had potential to do more but if "What I've Done" couldn't even manage a week in the top 5, "The Catalyst" was doomed from the start. Even though I love it dearly.

February 5, 201114 yr VV Brown and Gabriella both have a common element in their flops. Crown. The evil scum sacks that 'manage' the Sugababes and in the process destroyed the group also killed Mutya Buena's career [Though the A&R guy for Island gave a hand there] and they are the 'management' for VV and GabC. Both didn't deserve to flop, especially Cilmi as Ten really was a sublime album but their management are useless, the Sugababes sell on brand name alone [except when Island/Crown send the full album promo out 2months before the albums release date - Not forgetting that the album itself was $h!t] and they don't bother with their other acts. Gabriella got very very very lucky with Lesson's To Be Learned thanks to that advert. THIS. Well, Jessie J is on Crown/Island too. And this is the artist who is managed on the highest level in my opinion. I can't say they are unprofessional at all. It's just they've been making some very stupid moves with the certain artists.

Doubt they'll have another hit. Manic Street Preachers - they've been a fanbase band for about 10 years now, it's just physicals dying out has screwed them over even more in chart terms. Apart from that there's really no difference to what they were like in, let's say, 2005. My Chemical Romance - they could potentially have another hit (unlike the other two), but it depends. Were they just lucky to be active when that kind of music was booming? We'll see. And Maroon 5 are NOT rock, or even "indie". They're a straight up pop group (or pop/rock at best)... and their music hasn't changed a bit since 2004 so no surprise they flopped eventually.

Correction: Maroon 5 haven't changed their style of music since 2007. Their latest 2 albums don't reallys sound like Songs About Jane at all. Its a shame cos I love their latest album but knew it would flop because with a lot of artists, interest decreases over the years no matter what. Some artists' greatest work gets ignored because they're just not 'cool' anymore.

To be honest, I've never listened to a Maroon 5 album in my life and don't intend to, I was just judging by the singles which don't exactly show much progression at all. You're right they did change their style a little bit in It Won't Be Soon Before Long's era (and still maintained success as a result), but Misery sounded like a worse version of their 2004 songs to me, which is probably why it flopped I would guess. Doubt they'll have another hit. I think they could get at least something approaching a hit if they ever do anything as epic as 'What I've Done' again. The Catalyst was a poor comeback. I'm sure public interest isn't down beyond the point of no return yet, they last had a decent sized hit single less than 2 years ago and A Thousand Suns is still floating around in the lower reaches of the charts so there has to be some casual interest in it. February 6, 201114 yr Well, Jessie J is on Crown/Island too. And this is the artist who is managed on the highest level in my opinion. I can't say they are unprofessional at all. It's just they've been making some very stupid moves with the certain artists. My hate for the combo of Crown and Island and Crown in general is very very very well documented on this here forum. Those certain artists happen to be every single one they manage. They are the worst management in the business imo. If you remember Mutya started off well managed, as did Cilmi. All this vanished immediately when the Sugababes came back [Mutya] and just randomly with Cilmi. Mark my words, the only reason Jessie J is having success is because she has been well hyped. If she can build a name for herself she will follow the Sugababes career path [$h!t single choices, but good selling albums] otherwise she's new-Mutya as the Babes are due back this year and all Crown's resources will be going into making album #8 their biggest hit since 2.0. After all, the Sugababes have been their main clients for years and are ultimately their cash cow.
February 6, 201114 yr So, what you're saying Silas, is that Jessie J is just hype? Sorry, but there's more to it than that. She's doing well because she makes good music. Both Price Tag and Do It Like A Dude are great songs.

Both Price Tag and Do It Like A Dude are great songs. No, actually i'm saying the management have absolutely nothing to do with her current success. The fact is, that Jessie has been well hyped. I never said it was pure hype, but that she had been WELL HYPED. Learn to f***ing read would you. Oh, and i actually like DILAD and quite like Price Tag, not to mention i never said anything about the quality of the material JUST ABOUT HER HORRIFIC MANAGEMENT.
February 6, 201114 yr The Saturdays - Work Miley Cyrus - Party In usa ( should have been top 5) I just wish mssing you gets to number 1 and miley cyrus gets top 10 I loved 'Party in the USA' and I still think it's an anthem.... So disapointed it only got to #11! It got to #5 in Ireland!!
February 7, 201114 yr I'd say Robyn's whole 'body talk' series... Dancing On My Own...reached #8 but fell really fast Hang With Me...#54 Indestructible...#171  Body Talk pt. 1...#47 Body Talk pt. 2...#38 Body Talk pt.3...#168 like really? the body talk albums are amazing and the singles have been pretty much perfect, and how Indestructible couldn't even get into the top 75 is just appalling, its still shocks me why she isn't one the biggest singers out there right now as everything she does is good. February 7, 201114 yr Ed Drewett - Champagne Lemonade  This was one of the best songs of 2010 and failed to go Top 75. He really is very talented and I hope his album and next single do better, the sampler has some amazing tracks on it.
February 7, 201114 yr Definitely agreed with 'Champagne Lemonade', it's became a firm favourite of mine lately and it not doing well was a crime. :(
February 7, 201114 yr Kings Of Leon - Pyro such a brilliant single, can't believe it that flopped that hard.

Here Here Body Talk 3 is the best pop album since Madonna's Confessions. Every track could be a single - and if sung by any of the moronic chart girls would be Top 5 smashes.
February 7, 201114 yr Lady Gaga - LoveGame. Had huge potential to be a massive hit in the UK. Yet it only peaked at #19. Probably because of no promotion and at the time Gaga was gearing up for the release of The Fame Monster.
February 7, 201114 yr Agree with Robyn so much, considering how badly Body Talk flopped its mind-blowing to think that just 3 and a half years ago she had a #1 single! Dancing On My Own went #1 in Sweden for two weeks, shame it couldn't do the same here. I remember it was released when California Gurls was in the charts though, so it had no chance, but its such a great song. :( Edited February 7, 201114 yr by mikeb
