Benidorm star Geoffrey Hutchings has died suddenly aged 71.

The Rada-trained actor, who played thong-wearing sunbed tycoon Mel Harvey in the ITV comedy, is thought to have fallen victim to a 24-hour virus.

His agent Roger Charteris said: "He was fine at lunchtime on Wednesday but had died by Thursday morning."

Dorchester-born Hutchings is a familiar face from stage, TV and British film over 40 years. He will be best remembered for his diverse TV roles, including Our Friends In The North, Bad Girls and BBC1's EastEnders.

Movies included John Cleese's Clockwise and Mike Leigh's Topsy-Turvy.

He was due to begin filming the next series of ITV1's Benidorm soon and his BBC2 sitcom Grandma's House is due out this summer.

Mr Charteris said: "He never stopped working." Geoffrey is survived by second wife Andi and his three children.

R.I.P. Geoffrey

This is really sad, he's hilarious in Benidorm and the next series will be a bit worse off without him. RIP.
