July 8, 201015 yr 100% spot on mate... And I would say the following words written by John Lydon are as relevant now as when they were written in 1977.... God Save The Queen lyrics God save the queen The fascist regime They made you a moron Potential H-bomb God save the queen She aint no human being There is no future In England's dreaming Don't be told what you want Don't be told what you need There's no future no future No future for you God save the queen We mean it man We love our queen God saves God save the queen 'Cos tourists are money Our figures head Is not what she seems Oh god save history God save your mad parade Oh lord god have mercy All crimes are paid When there's no future How can there be sin We're the flowers in the dustbin We're the poison in your human machine We're the future you're future God save the queen We mean it man We love our queen God saves God save the queen We mean it man And there is no future In England's dreaming No future no future No future for you No future no future No future for me No future no future No future for you No future no future No future for you No future no future for you Rob - The facts are, the Monarchy is an outdated, anachronistic and SECTARIAN (because it's still in place that the Royal Princes or Princesses are not allowed to marry a Catholic, FACT. A throwback to the fukkin' MIDDLE AGES....) institution which should've been abolished back in the 70s....... yyyesss http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/2010060.stm
July 8, 201015 yr Pardon? She doesn't do it out of choice. She HAS to do it out of duty. Anyway hasn't the Civil List been frozen for years? I'm sure George Osborne said it would remain frozen. Er, right. So if she turned around and said that she wouldn't look over the civil bureaucracy, do opening ceremonies across the country etc., what do you think would happen? That they wouldn't let her be Queen? All she HAS to do is open Parliament and 'choose' the Prime Minister, along with international diplomatic visits (oh, boo hoo, what a trial!) - anything other than that she does off her own back.
July 8, 201015 yr We'd still have the Palaces mate... France does extremely well on the tourism front, visitors flock to Versailles every year, with the added bonus of having NO sitting monarchy.... Yeah, but you do get absolutely loads of tourists who come specifically to see (even if they won't actually ever) the Royal Family...
July 9, 201015 yr I think we need to see what a rejuvenated Labour's policies will be under their new leader. The previous two leaders have pushed through leglislation and a foreign policy you'd normally associate with the Tories and the hordes flocking back to them in hope of a change of heart would do well to scrutinise the history and previous allegiances of the new leader. The Lib Dems were the only party sitting towards the left during Labour's tenure and many would do well to remember this. I'm not happy with their complicity in recent changes but I can see the positive influences their being there. The Lib Dems were certainly to the left of Labour on civil liberties/immigration/social issues, but I was always suspicious of their economic policies and attitudes to poverty, and remember writing that on this forum a couple of weeks before the election. I'd love Labour to shift more to the left on their economic policy, but their election proposals would've been a damnsight better than the Coalition's. I too hope they drop their obsession with eroding civil liberties and prisons (I was deeply disturbed when Alan Johnson said last week he was closer to Michael Howard's position on prisons than Ken Clarke's) and their hawkish foreign policy, but frankly those are secondary issues right now.
July 9, 201015 yr With a bit of luck - after this - we should see the end of the Liberals / Democrats (whatever they wish to call themselves). They should be consigned to history - they just 'get in the way'. Norma I genuinely think we're going to see the Lib Dems splinter into two before long, with the left-wing of the party (Charles Kennedy, Ming Campbell, Simon Hughes, POSSIBLY Vince Cable) breaking away and getting back to what the Lib Dems were supposed to stand for, while the economic right of the party (Clegg, David Laws, Danny Alexander) will effectively merge with the Tories.
July 9, 201015 yr Er, right. So if she turned around and said that she wouldn't look over the civil bureaucracy, do opening ceremonies across the country etc., what do you think would happen? That they wouldn't let her be Queen? All she HAS to do is open Parliament and 'choose' the Prime Minister, along with international diplomatic visits (oh, boo hoo, what a trial!) - anything other than that she does off her own back. sounds like community service to me..... lol
July 9, 201015 yr I'd love Labour to shift more to the left on their economic policy, but their election proposals would've been a damnsight better than the Coalition's. Mmm, the coalition did not stand for Parliament together. Liberal economic policy has been severely undermined by the coalition, but they are the junior members and these are the first rounds of new legislation. To universally ignore the whip at this stage would lead to the break-up everyone has been predicting. As for a split, it sounds inevitable, but I hope they can keep it together and the Lib Dems remain a pseudo-watchdog among the largely Tory government.
July 9, 201015 yr scott, i get it alright, i just dont care...theres far more thngs to worry about then them. Sorry, you're wrong, there is really NOTHING more important than destroying the class privelege system that exists in this country and holds everyone back except the rich and priveleged who lord it over the majority....... Nothing fundamantal will ever change in this country while the rotten, corrupt Class system exists.... You want to keep the Royals for stupid reasons (tourism - which is a moot point as the example of France proves, "tradition".. bollocks, we'd may as well return to a Feudal Monarchy, burn "heretics" at the stake, and believe that the world is flat in that case...). Those reasons are simply not a justification for keeping them... I'm sorry, but what makes a bunch of inbred descendants of the House of Hanover, well-heeled accidents-of-birth any "better" than me or you...? "Der Vindsors??" Fukk em....
