Posted July 12, 200619 yr soooo..... the government are laying out plans to develop more nuclear power stations to meet our ever increasing need for electricity. as renewable scources are just not efficient enough to create enough power, is the government right? nuclear power after all is 'clean', unlike coal/gas powered power stations, but theres the age old problem with nuclear waste. your thoughts?
July 12, 200619 yr Frankly I trust nothing Blair says about how "green" nuclear fuel is. How the hell can burying radioactive waste be good for the planet ffs....? <_< This stuff has a half-life of 100,000 years, so we're gonna be expecting hundreds of future generations of our descendents to deal with this stuff we're gonna leave in the next few decades.... I dont really see that we have any moral or ethical right to do that to be honest.... Could you imagine if the Romans had nuclear power when they invaded us, we'd still be dealing with the sh!te they left behind over two thousand years on....
July 12, 200619 yr Author true scott..... but is there a viable alternative? can we power the nation on green methods?
July 12, 200619 yr Wait until the light go out, and then we'd wish we had made a decision. Everyone wants cheap power, but thats not going to happen anytime soon. We all want the same gadgets, tv,hi-fi,pc,dvd,washing m/c etc etc but they all require electricity to operate. There is no way wind power or wave power will generate enough for 60 million people. I hope I can be proved wrong, but I cant see any other choice but nuclear. I cant believe I'm saying that, but I just don't think we as a nation will give up our electrical appliances. All the damage to the ozone layer is carbon related, not nuclear. There has only been 1 near calamity in 50 years, and that was in Ukraine not the best example for stringent standards and regulation. As long as every required safeguard is taken, and we can find a way of storing/disposing the used fuel then we should go with the nuclear option. What about dumping them on the moon, not beyond the capabilities of mankind. I just don't think we are ready to go back and live like the pre-industrial revolution.
July 12, 200619 yr -_- This nuclear power stuff is really decisions about money and power mixing in politics. I really wish this route of using nuclear power stations isn't choosen, because if it does, then metaphorically it's all going to end in tears. Still I think we most likely will, contracts will be handed out, with government money(that your money from your families taxes), politicans will get nice hand outs and then sense and safety will kick in and all development will all grind to a halt. More money will then most likely be handed out to sort it out. In the mean while energy prices will rise at the individuals expense. Millenium dome part II

Yes, but that 'one near calamity' has had effects almost 20 years on... My girlfriend and her sisters all have serious allergies and other health problems because of Chernobyl, so do many people in Poland and the countries surrounding the Ukraine.. Could you imaging the effects on a tiny island like UK if one of these power stations goes t*ts up....? All it takes is one mistake... ....Or indeed, a terrorist attack...... Sorry, but if Nuclear Power is the answer, then maybe we're not asking the right question....
July 13, 200619 yr I think they're a great idea as long as Tony Blair will give permission for these things to be built in his own back garden......
