i dotn say 12 year old girls for green day. just 12 year old in general. if you get to 14 and over and still like green day you need to discover more music.

green day were one of my favourite bands when i was 11 ^_^

I'm finding this slightly awkward as I love both Green Day and LP and I'm 17... I think you're maybe undershooting their fanbase a bit, certainly the earlier stuff (2000 Light Years Away, Longview etc.) really apply more to people in their later teens.

how many people really know their older material now though apart from those of us who remember it, none of their new fans really hear it. i think at the time their earlier stuff was good for older teens, but it's aged, it's nothing exactly special theres much better stuff from that time to listen to, i'm 18 and i cant really take much of their older stuff that seriously nowadays. anyone who is around our age and likes American Idiot though is mental, or common, i can understand 12 year olds liking it, it has mainstream appeal, but for serious music fans and punk fans, really cant see how anyone could take it seriously.

I agree with Ben on this one. I loved their first album (I was 10 when it was released) and I still like listening to it. However, everything they've done after Hybrid Theory has, in my opinion, been dirge. "Numb" was nice for about five minutes and I got tired of everything else pretty quickly. :(
And once again the 'age generalisation' comes out. I have seen Green Day twice, both times the standing floor has been filled with people OLDER than me. I seriously dont understand how you can say their fanbase is 12 yo girls.

It's not just 12 year olds or anything, that's not really what I'm trying to say here. But for a lot of people, bands like Green Day are stepping stones to a 'better' music taste. Through discovering and liking bands like Green Day, they discover other punk acts and, as they grow older, tire of Green Day as their taste matures. Some are content and stick with them. But I think that the fact that they are in that 'stepping stone' league for quite a lot of people (along with likes of Linkin Park for rock / System of a Down for metal, Death Cab for Cutie for indie, etc.) does sort of say something about the...creativity level of their music? I'm really trying not to condescend here or claim that anyone's taste in music is immature (especially in a genre I'm not overly familiar with - I could go on about how I dislike Death Cab for Cutie but respect what part they had in my musical taste). I don't think there is anything wrong with a band that appeals to younger audiences as well; I liked Nine Inch Nails a ton when I was 11/12, and I still do.

But, to me, Linkin Park / Green Day / the like are more of a band for teenagers, specifically younger teens, creatively. They just sort of have that connotation to me, and having listened to them when I was younger I sort of feel justified saying that. And I think in terms of originally, sound, fresh ideas, creativity, they are lacking and therefore I find them 'bad'. Not trying to 'diss on u', but music discussion would suck if everyone thought everything was arbitrary and didn't have an opinion on a band. Literally the worst response to any art/music is to listen to it and have no opinion, it's borderline offensive.

END OF ASSHOLE-ISH RANT SRY Y'ALL

(p.s., so i look less pretentious, i still listen to paramore LOL even though they suck)

It is a small minority of late teens that have already grown out of these bands though, compared to the majority of 17 year olds my music taste would be pretty mature - you don't see chavs listening to Run-DMC or De La Soul or Public Enemy but I enjoy listening to The Clash, The Jam, Ramones etc. which is kind of the only comparison I can make. Surely it's better that LP are branching out rather than sticking to the same 'immature' sound? Don't knock the album until you've heard it, at least they're not Limp Bizkit :P

Bands like LP, Limp Bizkit, Green Day and Papa Roach helped me get into heavier stuff when I was older, without a doubt. I think that's the same for a LOT of people out there.

I'm nearly 21 now so I was literally just hitting adolescence when the nu-metal explosion happened. First high-school 'party' I ever went to, aged 12, had a soundtrack consisting of Limp Bizkit (laughing naughtily at all the swear words), Nickleback and Linkin Park. Kids today would have a soundtrack of Lady Gaga, Eminem and Rihanna. And because of that, I'm glad I grew up when I did - but I guess everyone looks back on their teenage years in the same way. As I grew older I fell in love with bands like Guns N' Roses (who remain my favourite band to this day), Metallica (who I've seen live twice), AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, all the classics. I do still love the 'classic' rock/metal bands the best, but there's a lot of awesome new music out there as well that my musical journey helped me discover. Bands like Black Label Society, The Answer, And So I Watch You From Afar, LaFaro, Trouble, Avenged Sevenfold, Gogol Bordello...I really, truly believe that if I hadn't have connected with bands as dire as Limp Bizkit at the age of 12, I wouldn't have went on to discover all the awesome music I love today.

I listened to The Catalyst a few days ago and I personally think it's really great. I must have listened to it about 10 times since. It's just my kind of stuff, with a really good atmosphere, and I love how it builds up to the last couple of minutes. Pretty much agree with Steve that it's cool how they kept evolving and left the nu metal phase behind, while still sounding like Linkin Park.
Saw the video for 'somewhere i belong' for the first time in ages today and it brought back memorys of a time when linken park weren't $h!t! Looking back at what's being said above(may have completly missed the point as i can only see the third page) i mainly listened to green day a few years ago but I still enjoy their older stuff cos the songs they wrote when they were young are still relaitable (girls, smoking, lazyness etc!)... I guess the tweens these days are more into songs with polictal messages in they most likely don't even understand though! Pop punk or whatever you want to call it may get slated but it seems good starting stone for kids to rebel from what the radio plays and start getting into other types of music. Sum 41's All killer no filler was the first cd i ever bought when i was about 10 and i've loyally been a fan ever since but luckily for me rather than thme going soft like linken park and green day their music got more mature and heavier which each album as i've got older.

I quite like what I heard of The Catalyst- of course its nowhere near the standard of their earlier hits, but I didnt really expect it to be

I disagree that Linkin Park only appeal to teenagers and are just an average band- They really defined the genre nu metal and did something that very few others managed- made it mainstream and got them into the public eye- its a shame they changed their sound so much as that turned them more 'ordinary' and not standing out like they did when they started

However, In The End, Numb and Crawling are modern day classics and reached outside of their fanbase- which are mainly young, but their still much better than the average metal band

Video premieres on Thursday, exclusive on MTV. Preview clips look good, suit the song and better that it's out with a couple of weeks to go before release. This really should go top 10 now.
Behind in the times but I am so looking forward to this album :D

The vid is nice.. Kinda weird though

LOVE the song now though

My word how chavvy is The Catylyst? What's with the dancey synth beats? No guitar, proper drums? Absolutely useless load of garbage.

Oh well, at least they've abandoned all pretence of ever being even remotely 'metal'. Let's leave that to the proper metal bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden etc.

so all music without guitar and drums = garbage? how very closed minded of you.

and tbh, were they really every a 'metal' band in the first place, anyone who would have compared them to Metallica and Iron Maiden before would be an idiot.
