Singles

Leaping to No.1 this week is the first chart-topper of this decade for the No.1 male solo artist of the last decade, Eminem, as his latest track “Love the Way You Lie” (DL: 5 to 1) jumps from No.5 to No.1 in its fourth week in the Top 100. It becomes his seventh No.1 single overall, and also gives Rihanna her fifth No.1 single and she now becomes the only act this decade to score a second No.1 chart-topper, having ran for two weeks at the top with her “Rude Boy” earlier in March this year. It’s give the pair one week apart with their accumulated totals at No.1, Eminem is now up to 22 weeks at No.1, Rihanna now is up to 21 weeks. Here is a look at their No.1’s…

Ten No.1’s ago was the last time that the Interscope label was at No.1, and that was with a Black Eyed Peas song, “Meet Me Halfway” (1 week, 2-Nov-2009), and “Love the Way You Lie” is now the labels 25th No.1 single in Australia. “Love…” becomes the 966th No.1 single in Australia (1940-2010), it’s also the 83rd No.1 with ‘Love’ in its title, the last of which was “Love Story” by Taylor Swift last March. It’s only the fourth ‘Lie’ at No.1 though, the last was “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira back in June 2006, and the tenth “Way” at the top, with Timbaland’s “The Way I Are” being the last in October 2007.

With Eminem and Rihanna racing to the top, it keeps the expectant “I Like it” (DL: 3 hold) by Enrique Iglesias at No.2 for a second week, although he does score the highest new entry on the albums chart this week. Katy Perry falls from her four week reign as a “California Gurl” (DL: 1 to 2) to tumble down to No.3 this week, pushing the ever present behind her “Airplanes” (DL: 2 to 4) down to No.4 this week for B.o.B. and Hayley Williams. After three weeks at No.6, Travie McCoy gains another wad-of-cash by climbing to a new peak of No.5 this week with “Billionaire” (DL: 6 to 5). Uncle Kracker’s “Smile” (DL: 4 to 6) is wearing thin, and falls down two places to No.6, whilst David Guetta is back up one place to No.7 with “Gettin’ Over You” (DL: 8 to 7). Adam Lambert scores the only new entry to the Top 10, as “If I Had You” (DL: 15 to 8, Phys: 3 to 6) is up four places to No.8 making it two Top 10 singles for the US Idol performer. “OMG” (DL: 7 to 10, Phys: 15 to 23) for Usher and Will.I.Am drops two places to No.9, and Eminem tops-and-tails the Top 10 this week, as “Not Afraid” (DL: 9 hold) holds onto the No.10 position again.

NEW PEAKS: Initially it’s not a new peak, but a great jump back up the charts for Amy Meredith, as “Lying” (DL: 21 to 14, Phys: 14 to 11) leaps back up ten places to No.14. Right behind them though, are three new peaking tracks with last weeks debut from Flo Rida and David Guetta on “Club Can’t Handle Me” (DL: 28 to 15) leaping thirteen places to No.15. After wallowing in the wading pool of the mid-20’s, Ou Est le Swimming Pool dive up the charts nine places to land at No.16 with “Dance the Way I Feel” (DL: 23 to 17), whilst Paramore score their second Top 20 hit as “The Only Exception” (DL: 20 to 16) is up five places to No.17.

Further down the charts, Maroon 5 scores the biggest leap of the week, up fifty places from No.89 to No.39 with their new single “Misery” (DL: 38 debut). Lady Antebellum re-enter the Top 50 and score a new peak of No.45 for their single “Need You Now”, and Philippine singer, now US based Charice is up four places and into the Top 50 at No.48 with her track “Pyramid”.

UK guitarist and producer Mark Ronson not only scores the highest new entry of the week, but he has first Top 50 single with “Bang Bang Bang” (DL: 23 debut), debuting at No.24. The track features guest vocalist from female singer MNDR and rapper Q-Tip and the track debuted at No.20 on the Irish Charts this past week. Mark has produced albums for Nikka Costa, Sean Paul, Macy Gray, Lily Allen, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams, Estelle, Kasier Chiefs and Daniel Merriweather amongst many others, and this new track is the first taste of his September due third album “Record Collection”. His Australian Chart history is:

Entry Date HP WI Titles

01-Dec-03 83 09 Ooh Wee (feat Ghostface Killah & Nate Dogg)

02-Jul-07 64 02 Stop Me (feat Daniel Merriweather)

10-Sep-07 72 02 Oh My God (feat Lily Allen)

10-Mar-08 36 02 Valerie (feat Amy Winehouse) (physical sales only)

Taio Cruz scored a No.2 single with “Break Your Heart” (DL: 11 to 12) (17-May-2010), and the song is sitting at No.12 this week. He scores two new entries this week with his new US single and his new European release. The highest of which is his new US Single “Dynamite” (DL: 25 debut), which debuts at No.27, whilst he also enters at No.31 with “Dirty Picture” (DL: 35 debut) featuring guest vocals from Ke$ha, this being his new European track. He also enters at No.50 on the album charts with his second album “Rokstarr”, his first charting album here though. He becomes the second solo male act this year to debut with two songs in the same week, Justin Bieber did it in April.

Perth group Birds of Tokyo scored their first Top 100 chart entry back in May when “The Saddest Thing I Know” reached No.64 (10-May-2010), and now this week they score their second chart entry, and first Top 50 entry as the single “Plans” (DL: 27 debut) debuts at No.30, whilst their third studio album “Birds of Tokyo” is released next week through their new label EMI.

GLEE REPORT: The top four new entries are by other acts, but the remaining four new entries are all Glee tracks, spurred along by the season finale from two weeks ago. Their highest new entry of the week comes in at No.42, and is a track that has been charting in Australia since the 1940’s, I’m talking about “Over the Rainbow” (DL: 40 debut). Initially it was the theme from the film ‘The Wizard of Oz’, performed by Judy Garland, and in the mid-60’s local act Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs scored a hit with it, whilst Billy did his own solo version of the track in the 70’s. Nikki Webster was starring in the stage performance last decade, and she made it to the charts with her version, and now the Glee gang score the eighth charting version with their rendition.

Entry Date HP WI Over the Rainbow versions:

01-Jan-40 04 26 Judy Garland

24-Sep-60 70 04 The Demensions

21-Sep-63 75 04 Digger Revell

26-Dec-64 02 23 Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs

Another song that has been covered several times and enters at No.61 for the Gleesters is “To Sir, With Love”. Originally charting here in late 1967 by one of the stars of the movie of the same name, Lulu (Sidney Poitier was the other star), the song was No.1 in most states of Australia, but at different times, so the song only climbed to No.14, but spent 40 weeks in the Top 100 (average at the time was 14 to 18 weeks). In August 1984, Disco singer Vicki Sue Robinson took her dance version all the way to No.7, whilst local singer Tina Arena did a version from her “Songs of Love and Loss” album which hit No.62 in late 2007, and now this week the fourth version has charted for the Glee’s.

Last week the original 2009 version of “Don’t Stop Believin’” re-entered the charts at No.39, this week it’s down to No.41, but the closing episode edition of the track, with more expanded vocals and chorus enters the charts at No.67, “Don’t Stop Believin’ (Regionals Final Version)”. It was the final part of the medley of Journey songs that the group performed, and the first two songs in that medley debut at No.79, “Any Way You Want it”/”Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’”. “Any Way You Want it” was originally released in early 1980, reaching No.23 in the US and No.5 in Canada, and has been used to sponsor such products as McDonalds, Ford, Heinz and Samsung as well as being used in the films ‘Caddyshack’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle’. And “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’” was Journey’s prior US Top 20 entry before “Any Way…”, reaching No.16 in the US and No.6 in Canada in the latter half of 1979.

The gang also climb back up the charts to No.37 (LW-40) with their version of “Jessie’s Girl” (DL: 38 to 36) giving them six titles in the Top 100 Singles chart, plus their albums all climb back up (even the Madonna one) so they have five albums inside the Top 50 Albums Chart. They have now had 22 songs (including re-entries) his the Top 100 in 2010, matching the record from The Beatles who in 1964 had 22 songs in the charts (including EP’s, and re-entries). So a 46 year record has been equaled, now we just gotta see if they can score any more entries to take them over the line.

Below Top 50: The second biggest climb of them week comes from local single Michael Paynter whose new EP “Love the Fall” (Phys: 10 debut) is up thirty-five places to No.52, no doubt helped by the radio saturation the track is receiving at the moment. Another local act who score a new peak below the Top 50 is Little Red and their track “Rock it”, which climbs to No.55. And the only other new lower peak comes from John Mayer’s “Half of My Heart” which is up thirteen places to No.82 this week.

Albums

With Eminem staying at the top of the ARIA Album charts for a fourth week with his album “Recovery”, he has now accumulated 17 weeks at the top with his six No.1 albums, pushing him to 27th placing in the list of acts who’ve accumulated the most weeks at No.1. Eminem has scored as many weeks at the top as John Lennon and The Seekers, whilst if stays another week, he’ll have tied Bryan Adams’ 18 weeks at the top. And with Eminem occupying both the No.1 single and No.1 album charts, it becomes the first time this decade that such an occurrence has happened and the fifth time for Eminem.

Kylie Minogue stays at No.2 for a second week with her “Aphrodite” album, also scoring a Gold sales certification too. With the Glee finale taking place almost two weeks ago, the current soundtracks move back up occupy the No.3 and No.4 positions, with the fifth soundtrack released from the show “Journey to Regionals” jumping twelve places to land at No.3, whilst “Showstoppers” is up one place to No.4. This in turn pushes last weeks No.3 entry for Hillsong Live, “A Beautiful Exchange” down two places to No.5, and also down two places is the soundtrack for “Eclipse”, now at No.6. I believe that is actually Adam Lambert's single. :kink:

Shame that Alexandra's ANL fell out of the top 50. :(

Congrats to RiRi getting her 5th number 1 track in Oz

Wow 3 Taio tracks in the top 50 :o Who saw that coming???? It's amazing his album is so low though with those track to support it :(

That's two top 10 singles for Adam Lambert over there :o At least he does well somewhere -_-
Congrats to RiRi getting her 5th number 1 track in Oz

Erm everyone. Once a song is huge in America, other countries' radio stations pick the song up because if it can be successful in America, it can be successful anywhere. -_-

I hope Kylie can climb back up with ATL, however having Aphrodite hold onto #2 is wicked.
