New 'Top of the Pops' on Five?

Richard Desmond has reportedly revealed that he wants to revive music show Top of the Pops.

The Daily Express owner is currently in talks to buy and revamp TV channel Five. The Guardian now reports that if Desmond is successful, he hopes to produce a new version of the axed BBC series.

He reportedly told colleagues that he wants "to create a series of landmark shows in peak time and believes a live music programme would win a big audience".

The BBC cancelled the long-running programme in 2006, though a number of Christmas and New Year specials have aired since. The rights to the Top of the Pops format currently reside with BBC Worldwide.

Desmond is reported to have placed a £100 million bid for Five.

This may just be yet another 'TOTP' rumour. But if not, would the show have the same impact nowdays??

Surely it'd have an even better impact? IF it got enough viewers it could really influence the charts.

I would have my doubts though with 'Five', pretty risky territory when it comes to 'popular' TV shows! ^_^

Yeah that could harm it somewhat. But Top Of The Pops. The fact it's such a well known brand and people are always going on about how they want it back would give it a solid launching platform possibly? As long as they make it about THE music and keep r*t**** like Fearne and Reggie from presenting it, it could be pretty good.

This is all speculation anyway :P

Am I the only one that opened this thread thinking that the boyband 5ive were about to present a TOTP comeback show?

Oh dear :(

I'd love to see it back but then I can't even receive Channel 5 on my TV at the moment so I wouldn't benefit much. And if anyone was to dumb the show down it would be that channel, the presenters would probably be worse than Fearne and Reggie. Only ITV1 could really make it a massive programme again I reckon, their record with prime time variety shows is second to none in terms of ratings, promotion and hype factor.

For a minute I thought you meant 5ive - the boy band.

Exactly. And tbh that would be a brill opening! :o

I thought it was 5ive as well :kink:

If true, Im not sure what would happen- Channel 5 is a pretty flop channel overall and that could lose it interest, but it would be nice to see TOTP back

Well if it's on Channel 5 it'd have a very minimal impact. Even the biggest shows on C5 only get like 2m at best. It really needs to be on BBC1 or ITV1. Preferably BBC1 still if I had my way, as I cannot stand ITV1 and prefer to avoid that channel at all costs.

Regardless, I would watch it no matter what channel it was on. Such a big part of my childhood (along with CD:UK/SMTV, Live & Kicking etc.) Miss them all muchly.

But yeah, I doubt this will happen. Can't see BBC giving up the rights for it somehow as they still have their specials they run. Why doesn't he just make a new music show? I would definitely watch it if it was in a Top of the Pops-style.

Channel 5 is the Poundstretchers of broadcasting - cheap, nasty but popular with a certain audience.

However, if the BBC are so anti-music that they refuse to bring back a national institution... then someone should do it for them.

The BBC has a pitiful amount of music on its main channels - Jools being the biggest, I think, and OK, it's a brilliant, groundbreaking and always entertaining show - but compare the music on the station to the sport..... and I know which one I'd rather. The BBC only seem to remember popular music even exists when Glastonbury happens.

That new producer also said he wants to buy Coronation Street, BGT and X Factor from ITV1 and Simon Cowell...

He's being too ambitious and I doubt he will get what he hopes for.

If they give it an early evening slot, then it may have a chance, but if they air it on Saturday morning/afternoon, then no chance.

I'll reserve judgement until I see it - a case of seeing is believing. If Channel 5 were to reintroduce TOTP to their TV schedule, I'd definitely watch the first show just to see what it's like.

Admittedly I wasn't happy about the axing of The Chart Show and the birth of CD:UK in 1998 but I ended up watching CD:UK without fail every Saturday morning until Cat Deelay left. Then it went crap with a whole new format!!!

the BBC wont sell it.

Simon Cowell made a bid last year and they tunred him down. it is a national institution and will be back on bbc1 one day....
