I'm taking "featured with" as a number 1, if Hayley Williams's first album gets to number 1, she will also join the list!
Duffy also missed out, thought Mercy was first charting single, turns out it was Rockferry (#45)

Who knew? :???:

This was somewhat of a 'buzz' single though :P.

was Rockferry a full single release?

Honourable mentions to Lily Allen and Whitney Houston - both started off with number 1 singles and number 2 albums.
I don't understand how a "charting single" would count. If you're going off début singles then both Duffy and Beyoncé would count, as Duffy's début single was 'Mercy' and Beyoncé's was 'Crazy in Love' and they both reached #1, along with their albums. -_-

Duffy's 'Rockferry' single is debatable as it didn't have a proper release, but 'Work It Out' was certainly Beyonce's debut single.

'Crazy in Love' is known was Beyoncé's début single. Her duet with Amil, 'I Got That' came out before 'Work It Out' did, so wouldn't it make that her début single? -_- A soundtrack release isn't a début single, and everyone knows that Beyoncé's début single was 'Crazy in Love', it's a well known fact.

That's silly, you can't discard previous singles as debuts just because they didn't make #1. Debut means FIRST, 'Work It Out' was a proper single that made the top 10.

What does anyone else think of this one?

There's a difference between a soundtrack single and a solo début single. If you went and asked any person what Beyoncé's début single was, they would say 'Crazy in Love'.

That makes no difference if 'Crazy In Love' is more remembered, 'Work It Out' was an actual proper single.

Like I said, it'd be interesting to see what other people's take on this is...

I am discounting Duffy and Beyonce :snif: as the recorded single to be released is SO debatable that I have to go for hardcore facts, hence the first single to feature the credit of an artist is their first (hence CHART debut), Rockferry charted a month before Mercy, and as much as I love Beyonce, the idea that you shouldn't count soundtrack singles would seem to scrap some of the biggest singles of all-time!
Discount them both. Plain facts are that they both had singles out before their number one singles. End of.

Sorry but I'm with Alan. 'Work It Out' was the first time Beyonce appeared on the chart as a SOLO artist. And how can you say it wasn't a 'proper' single when it had a CD available to buy in the shop?

It's on her #1 album.

I agree with that. Would be hard not to count it.

You can make things look like whatever you want if you're a fan.

If you hate an artist you can throw laughable things such as "Bionic never deserved to be a no. 1 because it didn't really sell"

If you look things objectively and look at the charts and charts only, Rockferry was Duffy's first solo release to chart, Work It Out Beyoncé's first

Featurings are more debatable. Didn't '03 Bonnie & Clyde chart before Crazy in Love too? So someone might think Crazy in Love was her third single.

And Cheryl was credited on Will.i.am's Heartbreaker, so it's a tricky situation too.

Ultimately it doesn't matter much though, I mean Beyonce and Cheryl were still MASSIVE with 'Crazy in love' and 'Fight for this love', launching properly their solo careers big time. BUT if it's not counted as their first solo singles, who cares, it's only chart facts and doesn't make any of them less successful. I don't get why some Beyonce fans argue so much about it, it's not like we're saying Beyonce is a fop ...

By the way, if we don't count 'Heartbreaker' we shouldn't count 'Dilemma' too as in both songs the female artists are only featured. At the same time if we count 'Dilemma' we should exclude Cheryl as her first charting single was 'Heartbreaker' which peaked at #4.

But I don't really know should we include features or not! :o

'I Got That', 'Work It Out' and '03' Bonnie & Clyde' all came out before 'Crazy in Love'. But that's fine if it's not going to be counted, I still view 'Crazy in Love' as her début single, but I see where everyone is coming from. ^_^

It's called having a discussion...
