Darius Campbell to headline Crewe Carnival entertainment

Jun 30 2010 by Will Harris, Crewe Chronicle

POPSTAR to Operastar winner Darius Campbell has been announced as star performer at this year’s Crewe Carnival.

The platinum-selling singer and actor, who shot to fame after reaching the finals of Pop Idol in 2001 and toured with Shakira, will perform a number of his hits at the event on Saturday, August 28, at the King George V Playing Fields.

In February, Darius won much public affection with his powerful and emotive performances in ITV show Popstar to Operastar, in which the 29-year-old wowed the audience and judges with his renditions of Nessun Dorma and The Impossible Dream.

The carnival, organised by Cheshire East Council’s outdoor events team and Friends of Queens Park, will be a free, ticketed event. Darius will perform as part of a full day’s entertainment with performances from local groups and other acts to be announced.

Tickets will be available from Crewe Lyceum Theatre from Monday, August 2.

Cheshire East portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, Cllr Andrew Knowles, said: “This is a fantastic coup for all those who are organising this year’s carnival.

“Darius is a popular and versatile performer with lots to offer. His success in Popstar to Operastar is testament to his all-round appeal.

“This year’s carnival is something I am very much looking forward to – it is a highlight of Crewe’s social calendar, with a long history in the town.”

Cheshire East’s outdoor events manager, Andrew Latham, added: “There’s a lot to look forward to at this year’s Crewe Carnival and the day will be filled with lots of local talent too. It’s not too late for local community groups and businesses to get involved, just phone me on 01270 537 846.”

Will have to do a trip and see just where this is and what parking is like. There is a symbol on the ticket which shows no alcohol, good in theory, but often not obeyed, and it's that which worries me, especially if people have been drinking through out the day. Sue

Sue, I think this day is aimed at family groups, and I suspect that the yoboes will avoid it like the plague.

Meg, your disappointment was so much greater after thinking you were going. Did you get a refund for

the train journey?

A bit of it. It was one of the few non Big Band I could have got to and got back from. Makes it worse that he's singing his new stuff. Someone, please record it. I know it spoils it at the time as you can't see it while you record but those of us who can't be there would be very grateful.
I cant wait to get my hands on Darius' new songs!! perhaps the history of big band will be the lauchpad, as he will be touring the country. Even if he just sells CDs at the venues - I cant beleive he ouwl dlet another PR opportunity pass. A UK tour is perfect
I'm hoping to go to this(though I'm still waiting for my tickets to arrive ) but I've managed to get double booked for the day. My charity busk is setup for the same day  Hopefully I'll manage to busk in the morning and drive over in the afternoon to catch D's performance in the evening. I'm hoping to get some images and possibly video of D, but hope many others can shoot some just in case!
I hope something is captured. Not that we'll all be sitting here waiting. No pressure then.

I have just spoken to Andrew Latham the events manager and the organisation for this sounds dire. I was enquiring about disabled parking and whether there was an area set aside for disabled people to view the event, like at the Glasgow Show. The answer was no to both questions, infact the reply was 'well we've not really thought about it , but there is a marquee in the field, and don't go near the front cause you'll get squashed! How a marquee helps the situation I'm not sure? It seemed like they had not even considered the problem.

Paul I wouldn't worry about the tickets either because according to him, ' nobody will be checking tickets and there's no security on the entrances.' In reply to my question why have tickets then, I was told 'when people have too much to drink we can ask them if they have a ticket'!! How that helps I don't know. It sounded like they have had problems in the past with achohol.

I always felt unsure about going to this event and now I think it's going to be a no. I'm not sure of the area and don't want to be in the middle of large drunken crowd with no security. Doesn't sound like a family event at all. Wonder how Darius is involved with this? Sue

It's just with it being 146 miles each way, I'd like to have the ticket in hand just to be sure if you see what I mean. I'm planning on being there sometime between 4.30pm to 6pm Sue, if you'd like to meet up :)

Well, I was considering going, but I'm not so sure I want to now. To go all that way then not find a park, and

to be at the back of a crowd, possibly the worse for drink, is killing all my interest.

After speaking to the events manager I don't think I'll be going Paul, the whole thing seemed so disorganised. Sue

Sorry to hear that Sue. It's a shame it's as disorganised as this. Very odd for a big public event like this not to cater for disable people at all :o

At the moment I've still not received any tickets and as much as I love D, I'm not going without one! Hope they come soon

I hope you go and can record something Paul....we are relying on you.....no pressure :D
Have spoken to Andrew Latham again today and they have obviously had a rethink of sorts. They are providing some disabled parking spots, but are not providing an area in front of the barrier because of 'health and safety'. People with mobility problems and wheel chair users can go into the marquee but he said 'the view was not good from there. It will provide some protection but it's hard to see the stage.' This and the fact that they've had problems with alcohol in the past makes me feel that the sensible thing is not to go, but I feel really disappointed. :( Sue
Sue it would be such a shame not to go even if you had to watch from a distance at least you would hear the songs
