Posted August 8, 201014 yr So, the first England match since the World Cup is on Wednesday at Wembley against Hungary. Lots of changes to the World Cup squad. Goalkeepers: Ben Foster (Birmingham), Joe Hart (Manchester City) Defenders: Wes Brown (Manchester United), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), John Terry (Chelsea) Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Aston Villa), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) Forwards: Darren Bent (Sunderland), Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Bobby Zamora (Fulham) ------ Paul Robinson was also called up but has pulled out of the squad and retired from International football. Disappointed with that, I think him, Foster and Hart would've been the right way to go over the next 2-4 years. No place for David James, Rob Green, Jamie Carragher, Matthew Upson, Ledley King, Leighton Baines, Stephen Warnock, Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon, Sean Wright-Phillips, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Emile Heskey from the squad at the World Cup. Some unlucky casualties there, Defoe, Crouch and Lennon didn't exactly do anything wrong in South Africa. And I still think Parker should be in there. Pleasing to see Jags, Dawson and Cahill all in the squad. With those three along with Shawcross and Jones all playing regular football in the Premiership and impressing I don't think we're ever going to have to call upon Upson, King or Carragher again - hooray!

Defoe is injured, not fit to play or am sure he would have been in the squad Bit of a disappointing squad tbh, it was a good chance to totally rebuild from scratch and instead it has failures like Lampard, Terry and Barry from the world cup (all should be dropped as they are too old now for the future) and donkey's like Zamora and Carthorse I would have gone 1. Hart 2. Johnson G 3. Cole 4. Shawcross 5. Dawson 6. Huddlestone 7. Lennon 8. Milner 9. Rooney 10. Gerrard 11. Johnson A
August 8, 201014 yr Author I don't think you can drop Terry for being too old. He's only 29, so he'll be 31 at Euro 2012 and 33 at the next World Cup. The last four captains to leas their teams out at a World Cup final were 29, 32, 34 and 35. You could argue (quite easily) that he should be dropped for his abysmal performances at the World Cup (although it doesn't help he had a differenct partner at the back for each game) however not because he's too old. I'd have dropped Barry, and probably Rooney too, just for punishment for p***ing up a building at 5:30am. If I'd have picked a 23 man squad for this game It woudln't be much different. I'd not have picked Brown, Gibbs, Wilshire (both too soon just yet I think), Barry, Cole and Rooney. In their places I'd put Richards, Baines, Parker, Lennon, Crouch and Agbonlahor.

Aah for some reason I thought he was 31/32 :o That aside though I do think England need to build for the future and get rid of most of the senior players and blood in a big group of guys in their early 20's who will peak at the next world cup I would certainly get rid of Terry, Lampard, Barry, Gerrard has to stay as he is skipper and Cashley is probably the best LB in the world much as he is a repulsive creature so he should stay.

Siiigh. I love how everyone is getting on their backs for that. OH MY DAYS, they pissed up a wall just like everyone else in the world has at some point. OH MY DAYS, ROONEY SMOKED A CIGARETTE, HANG HIM FROM THE GALLOWS. [/rant]

After that do whatever you like. It doesn't matter if it's standard practice in every city centre every weekend, he's one of the biggest role models in the country. Of course he should recieve some kind of punishment. I don't think you'd see that from the vast majority of top sportsment on the continent.

[/rant] We are not super fit athletes like he is though, he is meant to keep himself in shape and getting drunk and puffing away on cigs is not going to keep him in shape, look at Ronaldinho now Rooney will go the same way if he don't stay in shape. I wouldn't drop him but he is a prize dick doing what he did
August 8, 201014 yr I'm suprised no-one mentioned Jack Rodwell. Bit disappointed he's not in the squad really...wouldn have had him in over Wilshere.

August 8, 201014 yr Pretty sure he is out for a good while with injury unless I am confusing him with someone else  Nah, he's in the U-21 squad. I'd guess that Capello hasn't chosen him as he chose Barry instead...but still, shame he's not in the squad.

August 8, 201014 yr Author Who's Welsh.... Rodwell will get his time. He's only 19, if we're there I'm sure he'll be in the squad for Euro 2012
August 8, 201014 yr But it's not as if Rooney beat up a DJ and got away with it.. I don't see how he's setting a bad example really by having one night of living a normal life?
August 8, 201014 yr But it's not as if Rooney beat up a DJ and got away with it.. I don't see how he's setting a bad example really by having one night of living a normal life? The two things are a bit different... England hadn't just had a dysmal World Cup where the media are still harpering on about it now, and wanting an English manager/the whole U21 and U19 squad to take place of all the senior players. And with Rooney being the star player, he's bound to come in for a lot of criticism. It is a bit irresponsible when you're two weeks away from the new season and had a dysmal World Cup (even if I do think the media are overreacting).
August 11, 201014 yr ''Probably Hungary's Greatest Result in History'' - Phil Neville :banghead: Better than the 7-1 and 6-3 against England in the 1950s then. And their appearance in a World Cup final. I think we know which of the two Neville brothers got the brains.
