August 11, 201014 yr Yeah The Wire is a werid one, it was one of my case studies this year in Media, I have only seen the first 2 episodes, but it didnt even have the greatest ratings ever (especially not here), there wasnt really much of a thing made about it, but the DVD sales have been massive and has since gained the reputation as one of the greatest shows ever.
August 11, 201014 yr How on Earth can groundbreaking and brilliantly crafted programmes like Sopranos and Band Of Brothers be below generic shows like Supernatural???? Am I even watching the same thing???
August 11, 201014 yr Sugar Rush was amazing. One of my favourite shows ever, got both series on DVD too. Balanced humour and drama so well and Sugar is probably one of the best television characters that ever existed tbh . Always thought it was horribly underrated.
August 12, 201014 yr How on Earth can groundbreaking and brilliantly crafted programmes like Sopranos and Band Of Brothers be below generic shows like Supernatural???? Am I even watching the same thing??? welcome to Buzzjack.
August 12, 201014 yr Sugar Rush only 58, got to be one of the biggest shockers so far, I thought it would be top 30 at least on here!
August 12, 201014 yr Author 57 Neighbours 210pts http://neighbours.com.au/images/Ashleigh-Brewer_256x192.jpg Buzzjack's favourite characters: Elle Robinson, Kate Ramsay & Lyn Scully I can only assume people have been voting based on NOSTALGIA because by all accounts current producer Susan Bower, a woman having a mid-life crisis and living out her teenage years through the medium of television, has completely run Neighbours into the ground and shockingly seems to have absolutely no awareness of this, believing the show is on top form from the interviews I've read. Regardless of its current state there was a time during the early noughties when Neighbours was practically unmissable, boasting a plethora of legendary characters - Lyn, Harold, Madge, Steph, and of course Toadfish - and some sharp-ass writing. Buzzjack's favourite characters are the manipulative Elle, relative newbie Kate and classic matriarch Lyn. =54 Buffy The Vampire Slayer 220pts http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-zOrAL1V5Jg/SRbvPL4UjRI/AAAAAAAAAvE/Yea3ZLts0E4/s400/snaps_alyson_hannigan_as_willow.jpg Buzzjack's favourite character: Willow Rosenberg This classic genre-bending 90s sci-fi drama/horror/thriller hybrid is one of the most celebrated 'teen' dramas of all time, although it appealed to a wide audience thanks to its almost constantly dark tone, intelligent characters and believable action and fight sequences. The title character Buffy, who made actress Sarah Michelle Gellar into a phenomenon, and stiff librarian Giles, who often helped Buffy in her fight against the villains of Sunnydale, are both amongst the many favourite characters in the show - alongside Xander, Cordelia, Angel and Spike - but it was Willow who emerged as Buzzjack's favourite. Clearly, unlike my art teacher who was very vocal about it, you weren't bothered about her turning lesbian! Like most people (I imagine) I saw a fair bit of the show back in the day but I probably lost track as the series went on. Maybe I'll rectify that one day. =54 Coronation Street 220pts http://files.stv.tv/img/galleries/coronation-street/corrie-chicks/470x332/BECKY_GRANGER.jpg Buzzjack's favourite character: Becky McDonald I've never liked Coronation Street one bit - there's a sort of unspoken rule about EastEnders fans not being able to like Corrie and vice versa. Of course some watch both but I've always found 'the Street' to be a horribly pantomime sort of show with a host of unlikeable, common as muck characters. Not for me. I will try to be objective here though! Celebrated storylines from the 21st century have included Mad Maya and the much-acclaimed Richard Hillman and his evil ways, which the show recently tried to replicate rather less successfully with Carla's ex-husband Tony. Buzzjack's favourite character is the gobby, unfortunate-looking Becky McDonald whose troublesome marriage to Steve has been at the centre of a number of storylines. =54 Misfits 220pts http://media.comicmix.com/media/2010/01/19/misfits.jpg Buzzjack's favourite characters: Kelly & Nathan Arriving in the wake of popular British teen dramas like Skins and The Inbetweeners, Misfits, also shown on C4, sees five teens on community service develop superpowers after they're caught in a freak storm. If that sounds ridiculous it's because it is. Misfits got off to a slow start with a terrible first episode marred by some truly laughable CGI (British budgets clearly don't extend very far) but it found its groove two or three episodes in and became a funny, engaging, occasionally touching show with an ability to take the audiences places they never expected. Buzzjack's favourite characters are gobby chav Kelly (not much of a stretch for the actress) and the wildly inappropriate joker Nathan. Good stuff.
August 12, 201014 yr The Wire has had the most incredibly bizarre success - even at the time it was airing it was snubbed by awards shows like the Emmys which other critics' favourites succeed at. It's literally only when it came to an end that people started piling the praise on it and it developed a reputation as something amazing. I guess it's sold well on DVD. I meant to watch it when BBC2 started showing it but I couldn't be arsed starting yet something else. I still want to though ESPECIALLY now I've seen Idris Elba in Luther and realised what a fantastic actor he is. I watched The Wire on DVD, absolutely bloody amazing series, probably the best Police Drama ever made (and I've seen a hell of a lot of those in my life, so it's not something I say lightly...). I can only guess why The Emmys didn't like it, it actually showed the drug dealers and gang-bangers as real people rather than one-dimensional cut-outs, although it never had any illusions as to who they actually were, showed the cops as being flawed, yet still fundamentally decent people, but who were willing to cut corners to get the job done, didn't exactly paint the city of Baltimore or local politics in general in a particularly positive light, and had a lot of very, very bad language, oh, and probably had one of the coolest lesbian characters in any show ever.... In short, the characters on The Wire actually came across like real people and you came to genuinely care about what happened to them, even the "baddies"... Some deaths of major characters were absolutely bloody shocking and really hit you hard.... But then, this is what well-written drama really should make you feel IMO.....
August 12, 201014 yr Oh how I love Misfits, I watched the first episode and then gave up until very recently when I came to the conclusion that it ended rather brilliantly, very much so looking forward to the second series. Helped of course by the fact that all five leads are extremly interesting, I had to vote Kelly as a favourite though, always has the best lines and the fact that the actress basically is Kelly is just wonderful. I enjoyed Coronation Street back in 2004/05 but frankly it's now garbage. The Tony Gordon stoyline seemingly went on for decades, and this nonsense with John is awful too. The majority of the characters should have been axed years back, in particular the dreadful Anthony Cotton and Kym sodding Marsh. I do adore Becky though. And Norris and Rita. The rest are mostly dreadful. Neighbours I frankly gave up on years ago, it was unmissable for a few years and the cast was solid and brilliant. One of Neighbour's problems though is that the cast just seems to change at such a speed, if I probably tuned back in to it now I would recognize half of them.
August 12, 201014 yr I agree about Coronation Street, watched it back in the Hillman days but it's incredibly tacky now. Misfits was the WEIRDEST thing I think I've ever seen, it was almost good because it was so terrible.
August 12, 201014 yr How on Earth can groundbreaking and brilliantly crafted programmes like Sopranos and Band Of Brothers be below generic shows like Supernatural???? Am I even watching the same thing??? Oh, come, come now dude, there's far, FAR worse than Supernatural out there...... Just wait til we get to the real formulaic gash like CSI Miami or Bones...... Supernatural is a pretty damn well-written and made show for what it is.... Due in no small part to the likes of John Shiban and Kim Manners (X-Files) being involved....
August 12, 201014 yr Admittedly my vote for Neighbours was mostly based on nostaglia. It's veered right off course recently what with everyone being over 32 or under 19 (and us being treated to dire drawn out storylines such as the 'deb ball' or whatever :drama:). I haven't watched it in about a month, although this is more to do with moving house and not having reception for Channel 5 anymore :kink: Still, if I cared that much I'd watch it online, so I clearly don't :( Up until a couple of years ago though, I'd be gutted to even miss a single episode. I never watch Corrie or any of the other soaps apart from Eastenders to be honest, so I really can't comment on that.
August 12, 201014 yr 53 / Peep Show / 222 Points http://www.comedy.co.uk/images/library/people/180x200/p/peep_show_mark.jpg Buzzjack's favourite character: Mark Peep Show greets us next, a Channel 4 sitcom starring the delightful duo of David Mitchell & Robert Webb as Mark and Jeremy. The show is quite interesting in the way it uses POV shots with audible commentary from the main characters, and while I have admittadley only seen a few episodes of this, it seems to be fairly raved about so must have something. Chrisfishlock will no doubt tell you more. =51 / Scrubs / 223 Points http://tvmedia.ign.com/tv/image/article/766/766617/scrubs-elliot_160_1172109279.jpg Buzzjack's favourite character: Elliot So Scrubs is up next, this American comedy set in Sacred Heart, a fictional teaching hospital. I have to say, despite this being E4s second biggest show for re-runs behind 'Friends' I have absolutley no interest in it and don't actually find it funny in the slightest. All personal opinion of course though, and clearly you all enjoy it as the 51st best show. =51 / Green Wing / 223 Points http://www.sitcom.co.uk/green_wing/graphics/char_sue.jpg Buzzjack's favourite character: Sue I'm not going to lie to any of you lovely Buzzjack watching audience, so let me get straight to this and say before this countdown I have never heard of this show. So allow me to give some fairly basic information I discovered. Green Wing is an award-winning British sitcom which is set in the fictional East Hampton Hospital Trust. However, although it is set in a hospital, there are no medical storylines. Interesting you have two hospital based sitcoms at #51. Coincidence? I think not. 50 / QI / 232 Points http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qi.jpg Our first panel show of the countdown comes up now. This BBC2 show hosted by Stephen Fry. Like most panel shows, it of course focuses on comedy rather than being an actual 'quz' show, and the questions on QI in particular are always fairly obscure, with points not only awarded for correct answers but also for interesting ones. It's a fairly good panel show, but rightfully finishes below the rest in this countdown. Perhaps if Stephen Fry got a nose job I would find it more entertaining.
August 12, 201014 yr Misfits is amazing, so well written and the cliffhangers were amazing! I think the characters are what made it so good though. Probably one of my favourite TV Shows at the moment.
August 12, 201014 yr Author I've not seen much of Green Wing but what I have seen is HILARIOUS. Sue is absolutely divine. Scrubs is total crap. Not even slightly funny.
August 12, 201014 yr Peep Show definatly should of been higher, one of the best British comedys ever. inmyopinion
August 12, 201014 yr I have a soft spot for Scrubs it has to be said, though I can definalty understand the criticism it would get. I sort of didnt really 'get' QI to begin with, but I've grown to really like both the programme and Stephen Fry.
August 12, 201014 yr Scrubs is total crap. Not even slightly funny. THIS. I can't believe they are STILL going on with this show :|
August 12, 201014 yr Finally, people who don't like Scrubs! :D So not funny. Never understood why it was so popular.
