Posted August 15, 201014 yr so we've had films that make you cry, now it's films that have made you think a lot after leaving the cinema. sorry if people find these threads boring but i'm really into films and i really like getting recommendations and having conversations with people who love films too. though i'm sure the people who didn't like these kind of threads wouldn't have even clicked on it anyway so whatever. so yeah the films that have had quite a big effect on me or have made me really think about them so far are bus 174 http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/1651/bus174.jpg a documentary film about what happened on bus 174 in brazil when it was hijacked by a man in 2000. it delves into the mans past and gives you so many reasons why he did it. unless you don't know what happened i wont give anything away because part of the greatness of it is how the story is told and revealed. the past 20 minutes or so are so effective in the way they're shown and told and i couldn't stop thinking about what had happened to the guy for ages after. the illusionist http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/9770/imgthe20illusionist1.jpg for me the ending this was incredible. it's about a magician during the turn of the century in vienna who uses magic to try and get back his past love. that sounds pretty soppy and boring but trust me it's told really well. i'd like to think that i'm pretty good at working out how films with twist endings are gonna pan out but with this one i was well off. i really didn't see this ending coming and i was thinking about it for so long afterwords trying to backtrack in my mind what had actually happened. also quite similar to the prestige in many ways but i preferred this one. earthlings http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/8193/earthlingss.jpg a documentary about how humans depend on animals for pretty much everything including food, clothes and entertainment. i was a vegetarian beforehand but i left the film thinking about what else i could do to stop contributing to the things i saw which i think is a great thing for a film to do. the cove http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7669/20090116cove560x300.jpg another documentary this time about the mass killing of dolphins in japan. it's outrageous how heartless some of the people in this film are but on the same hand the documentary makers and activists are so dedicated and determined to make a change that it makes it really uplifting and makes you want to help out in some way. elephant http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/3899/elephant3o.jpg a film that makes you think about things in a much different way. it's a film about a school shooting which is shot beautifully and the story is great but during the last half hour when the shooting takes place it really got my heart racing just imagining how i'd react in all their situations. it gives the viewpoints of lots of different people and how they react to it and while a great film it's scarier than any horror movie i've ever seen just for the sheer realness of it. the bridge http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/2420/22lim1600.jpg yet another documentary this one about the people who commit suicide by jumping from the golden gate bridge which is apparently the place where the most people commit suicide anywhere in the world. it's a really interesting documentary which gives you a background on the person and then shows you the footage of them jumping. apparently 24 people committed suicide from the bridge in the year that they made it and they managed to film 23 of them. how they managed to do that with so many people to choose from on the bridge is beyond me but it's such an interesting documentary which really makes you think about what you would do in that position, who you'd tell, where abouts you'd jump from etc. well i did anyway.. my kid could paint that http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9131/mykidcouldpaintthat.jpg and finally a documentary about a 4 year old girl who created these amazing paintings, had her own exhibitions and sold the pieces for thousands until people started to doubt whether it was actually her who painted them in the first place. it's a very interesting documentary which gives you quite a good insight into the world of modern art and questions your feelings about it. and the interview at the end with the mum and dad is so interesting and it really helped me make my mind up about what i think of it all. and that's it. i hope i've persuaded some of you to see at least one of these. other recommendations are very welcome!
August 15, 201014 yr Cloverfield I don't think I had experienced anything like this before, first the unique viral campaign, then the use of just handheld cameras, then also i loved the fact you only found out what was happening, what the monster was etc, at the same time the characters were. But the real reason I am mentioning it is that it's the only film I have ever seen that when it finished people didnt get up at leave, everyone just sat in silence for like 30 seconds, blew everyone away. Being John Malkovich Just a complete mindf*** of a movie, you really have to put thought into it to get your head around it, starts off so simple as well, it's a fantastic film, SPike Jonze is a genius, etc, couldnt get this film out of my head after I finished watching it. It definatly kept me thinking. The Matrix Because i'm so 1999, no really, it has to be said, although it had $h!tty sequels this movie was on another level when it was released, really makes you think, is this life real? is this true reality? It is definatly a brilliant and classic film, they shouldnt have made sequels. Capitalism: A Love Story Really does prove capitalism is evil, espeically in America, I hated capitalism before, and maybe Michael Moore doesnt always look at both side of things (although why should he when he has seen what bad comes out of capitalism), it really does make you hate capitalism. I may add more later if I think of any worth mentioning.
August 15, 201014 yr the cove http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7669/20090116cove560x300.jpg another documentary this time about the mass killing of dolphins in japan. it's outrageous how heartless some of the people in this film are but on the same hand the documentary makers and activists are so dedicated and determined to make a change that it makes it really uplifting and makes you want to help out in some way. My step brother was telling me about this, apparently it's mega depressing (well obviously), I sort of want to watch it but sort of don't.
August 15, 201014 yr Author Capitalism: A Love Story[/b] Really does prove capitalism is evil, espeically in America, I hated capitalism before, and maybe Michael Moore doesnt always look at both side of things (although why should he when he has seen what bad comes out of capitalism), it really does make you hate capitalism. I may add more later if I think of any worth mentioning this sounds pretty interesting. will definitely give this one a watch.. and i completely agree with you about cloverfield! the whole thing was like an experience rather than just a film. plus when you see signs saying that you'll probably throw up afterwards it a bit more intriguing.. My step brother was telling me about this, apparently it's mega depressing (well obviously), I sort of want to watch it but sort of don't. i really do recommend it. it is really hard to watch and i nearly cried quite a few times but it's so interesting and it gives you a whole new insight on places like seaworld which i'll never visit in my life. and zoos for that matter.
August 15, 201014 yr Author Shutter Island. Brilliant film and proper thought provoking. the trailer looks great for this!

Yeah definatly check out Capitalism: A Love Story, you seem to like documentries, infact all of Michael Moore's films I reccomend.
August 15, 201014 yr After watching Twin Peaks, Fire Walk With Me ... I remember thinking ... what the F possessed me to pay to watch that pile of crap. Norma Seriously ... though not at the cinema ... I watched a German film a few weeks back on ITV4 'The Wave' ... and it really is a thought provoker. Edited August 15, 201014 yr by Norma_Snockers
August 16, 201014 yr Shutter Island. Brilliant film and proper thought provoking.THIS. I think this is the biggest one for me. It took me quite a while to actually click onto to what happened. Phenomenal film. the trailer looks great for this!I FULLY recommend it. It's probably my 4th favourite film of this year, behind 'Toy Story 3' & 'Inception' definitely and MAY just beat 'Kick Ass' too actually...
August 28, 201014 yr Shutter Island? Really? Probably the single most obvious twist in cinema history. 15 minutes in I said to my friend I'm beginning to think he's actually a patient but we both agreed that was far too obvious, and then about 20 mins later Angel Heart[/sPOiLER] was mentioned and that was it. Very well made and acted as Scorcese films always are but never a good ending Personally I think of the films I've seen recently, those with an interesting resolution include The Road, Exam & Tony. None of them have particularly surprising or 'twist' endings but all have a powerful statement to make about the human psyche Edited August 28, 201014 yr by Severin
October 19, 201014 yr I'd agree with Shutter Island, but most of all Se7en. Fantastic film, so clever and so well-written.
November 11, 201014 yr Hey :-) Toy Story - I used to love it when i was little me and my brother used to watch it all the time. I haven't for years, until the other day and it brought back a lot of memories which i can never have again because he's nearly 19. We are sadly not children anymore, so it made me cry. Now i'd give it a 9 for sadness Ive seen Little Princess, i used to have it on dvd but i don't know where it went. But im glad she gets a happy ending. I remember watching it as a little girl with my stepsisters. Toy story 3's sad? It hasn't came out in England yet :-( Lucky! Forest Gump - 10 Titanic - 8 Coco before Chanel - 7 That's it really

Definitely made me think long after watching it, especially understanding the ending.
November 11, 201014 yr 'The Girl Next Door' Such a gripping and yet one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. Would never watch it again because it's so hard to watch. Really powerful and you don't even see anything that graphic anyway. It's based on a true story and one of the most horrific crimes committed in USA. It's basically about a girl who's parents have died and so she goes to live with her Aunt who is an alcoholic and has five male children, her husband also cheated and left her. She and the boys abuse her, with only one of the boys having a conscience about what he is doing but is hopeless to stop it all. It sounds simple and throwaway but it's one of the most powerful films I've ever seen.
