@Jamesy_Moo I don't.. I did extra work on bedlam then they asked me to audition for a one line role where I would have to kiss will young

There aren’t many people who successfully combine musicianship with a successful acting career. But, having won Pop Idol back in 2002, and gone on to have a string of hit albums, including From Now On and Friday’s Child, Will Young’s thespian credentials are burgeoning nicely. He starred alongside Dame Judi Dench in the BBC film Mrs Henderson Presents, and now he’s one of the young and glamorous cast of the paranormal series Bedlam, Sky LIVING’s first scripted drama.

 

Set in and around Bedlam Heights, an apartment block converted from a pre-Victorian lunatic asylum, Will plays the geekily gorgeous Ryan, who flat shares with Kate (Charlotte Salt) and Molly (Ashley Madekwe.) They are joined by Jed (Theo James) who has visions of the dead — which is very handy, as the inhabitants of Bedlam Heights include the vengeful spirits of the former inmates!

 

TV Choice joined Will on set in Manchester for a chat…

 

Why did you want to play Ryan in Bedlam?

 

Apart from the script, I felt I could play the character. I like Ryan. He’s a geek and knows all about computers, but he’s not very confident and doesn’t know himself that well. But he’s got a kind heart.

 

How does Ryan react to the paranormal events initially?

 

I think he is sceptical. But he becomes involved in it quite quickly, and his geeky side allows him to work things out, so he does a lot of the investigating, which he enjoys. So his scepticism changes pretty quickly.

 

There might be some nakedness involved, we hear.

 

I couldn’t possibly comment! Nothing was as difficult as when I did Mrs Henderson Presents and had to stand up in front of the camera with my kn*b out, so anything after that is fine!

 

When did you get into acting?

 

It was when I was 12. I was going to go to drama school, but I didn’t want to leave my twin brother Rupert. And then my passion came back when I was making music videos. Weirdly, I had said I wanted to do a fil, and then Mrs Henderson Presents came up, and then I said, ‘I want to do a play’ and then The Vortex came up. And then I wanted to do a TV series, because I wanted that regular work so that I could learn and improve, and then Bedlam came up. So now I’m trying it with objects. I want a Ferrari!

 

Does it still feel a bit weird being an actor, as opposed to a singer?

 

Not now. I also did two TV shows last year [skins and Miss Marple] and I’ve hopefully got some other stuff lined up, so now I do feel like a proper actor. I think you can combine the two careers but it’s harder here than in America — people in the UK are a bit more narrow-minded about it.

 

So it’s not the end of the music?

 

No, after this it’s back to finishing the album. I love both careers, and having not sung for three months my energy will be up for writing music.

 

So, do you want to distance yourself from the fact that you came from a reality TV show?

 

No, that’d be like me saying my name isn’t Will — it’s just part of who I am. It’s been nine years since I won Pop Idol and since then I’ve had five albums, been in a film, a play, three TV series, two documentaries, written articles for papers — it’s just brilliant. It’s everything I wanted to do when I was younger, and it’s been an incredible conduit for me, so I would never be ashamed of it.

Bedlam

Drama New series.

 

Living's first original drama commission is a slick and serious six part paranormal drama. It follows the young residents of Bedlam Heights, an apartment block converted from a lunatic asylum. Among them are flat sharers Kate, Mollly and Ryan (Pop Idol turned actor Will Young).

 

Squaring the triangle is buff Jed (Theo James) who enters their lives with a history of mental illness and a mobile phone that sends texts telling him to save people.

 

It is the Sixth Sense meets Being Human, and plays with a resolutely straight bait, although a little subversive humour would not go amiss. But horror devotees will enjoy the traditional trappings - goop splurges out of basins, misbehaving technology, silhouettes in corridors - while a rollicking climax makes a good fist of getting viewers to commit.
