It seemed a bit disjointed but it's obviously got to establish the characters and their relationships. I don't know if we are going to chat about this in depth without spoilers over here so won't say too much. But I enjoyed it - Will played Ryan just right - gentle, vulnerable and a bit naive about how women behave. He was totally right to question her motives - I can see she did it just to see how far she could push him - even suggesting to Molly that he didn't seem to be into girls - and totally why she did it. Total bitch.

I thought he did good and more than held his own. And apparently it's going to get scarier.

Thanks for the reviews and snippets. I saw them last night/early hours but it was really a bit late to post after I'd trawled through all the Tweets

I like the way Facebook follows the storylines - giving us the characters' thoughts on what's going on in the house etc. Clever stuff.

I must admit to being worried about watching it, because of Will and because i am a horor/sci/fi fanatic but i worried for nothing,

Will was great and the show great i would watch it without Will in it

Thanks to temh on Baby D for the heads up:

this is nice from Sky showbiz. :)

We'll have a while until we see Will Young become a father.

The star has set the record straight about the latest baby buzz surrounding him.

To say he's not quite ready to take on the role of dad.

Will told Metro: "I don’t want a baby."

The singer-turned-actor raised eyebrows when he chatted about wanting a child on his Twitter page last month.

He explained to the newspaper: "It was just a flippant comment. I need to have a dog first – and a boyfriend."

Frankly, we're not sure how he'll find the time to fit any of that in.

The 32-year-old's career is going from strength to strength with his current role on supernatural drama Bedlam, and promise of an "exciting" new album.

"I’ve had good feedback from the record company.

"I did a song with Groove Armada last year which someone compared to Bronski Beat, which was a compliment, so I’ve gone a bit upbeat."

Despite the Pop Idol's growing success, his feet remain firmly on the ground: "I'm not as 'hot' as I was at the beginning, which suits me well."

We beg to differ, Will.

Take a look below to see his inspirational transformation into a multi-talented national star.

Viewing figures tweeted by Sky Living.

Bedlam got 406,000 viewers, peaking at much more. Fantastic start, and the power of ALL the cast.

From what I've seen that's a good start for a non-terrestial channel. Should be more with the repeats.

Thanks to Val.

Synopsis of first episode from the Bedlam Facebook page.

Last nights Bedlam kicks off with a scream, as Kate’s cousin Jed makes his way to Bedlam Heights.

Along a country road, he hitchhikes; the driver makes awkward small talk, until Jed confronts him with the uncomfortable truth. The driver is dead - the ghost of a man killed in a car crash. Angry, the ghost attacks Jed, turning round to face him with blackened out eyes. Jed fights him off, and forces him to disappear.

A mysterious text message pops up on Jed’s phone- SAVE KATE.

Kate is working for her father Warren, renting out flats in Bedlam Heights - an old asylum that’s been in the family for generations. Warren is now converting it into luxury apartments, Kate along side him, renting out the rooms and settling deals.

Today is Kate’s birthday and Warren gives her the gift of an old black ring he’s found in the building. As she leaves the offices for the night a ghostly presence is watching her…

Kate lives in one of the flats at Bedlam Heights with her best friend Molly and IT geek Ryan. Kate hates Molly’s reluctance to act on her feelings for Ryan, and after a few birthday drinks she makes a play herself... pushing him into the bathroom and kissing him.

As things get passionate between them in, water rises in the bathtub and pours down the walls. Suddenly, Jed bursts in. He drags Kate from Ryan, who is completely shocked to see her adopted cousin there.

The next day, Jed is plagued by strange visions of a woman drowning. He glimpses a strange figure and finds the word DROWN written in steam on a mirror…..

Meanwhile, Kate gives her ring as a ‘sorry’ present to Molly, who threads it on a chain round her neck. Molly loves it. However, something sinister is about to occurs…

While Molly is washing, the ring dangles in the basin and suddenly pulls her head underneath! She struggles – partly drowning - but the chain breaks, and the ring is flown through the air.

She’s had a lucky escape...this time.

Molly’s becomes increasingly concerned that she hasn’t seen her friend Zoe since the previous day, and when she visits her apartment, her room mate reveals she hasn’t heard from her all day….

Back in the apartment, Kate finds the black ring and puts it on. That night, Kate has a restless sleep. She dreams she’s trapped in a strange room with no door and a body on the floor; she wakes suddenly in a deserted corridor. She’s been sleepwalking…

In conversation, Molly tells Jed Ryan’s brother James drowned in the canal a year ago, which leads Jed to think there may be more than one ghost in this flat….

Jed visits the canal, and sees James’s ghost sitting on the other side. As he is there, he sees Ryan arrive, and watches as Ryan throws a letter into the water, and then leaves.

Jed follows Ryan and finds him alone in a restaurant. He explains this is where he last saw James, a year ago. He expresses how he is struggling with his emotions, and that the letter thrown in the canal was to James...an attempt to let go. Jed listens, and Ryan asks him if it’s what Molly told him is true- can Jed really see ghosts?

Back in the flat, Kate gets settled for a relaxing bath with a glass of wine. A ghostly figure appears in the mirror behind her, and once again, the unexplainable and eerie water pour down the walls. Kate slips down the tube, and begins to drown, struggling with the ghostly being that is pulling her underneath.

As the boys leave the restaurant and approach Bedlam Heights, Jed receives a flood of messages -‘Save Kate’, ‘Save Kate’. He breaks into a run, clambers up to the apartment and breaks into the bathroom. He grabs the ghost of Kate and battles with it, until the ghost disappears.

Now that Ryan has witnessed Jed struggling with an unseen spirit, will his life ever be the same again? Will Ryan want contact with James? Will Molly have another rush with death? What will happen... next week, at Bedlam Heights?

Bedlam premiere review

Tuesday, 08 February 2011 21:14 | by Ciccone Cooper

REVIEWS - TV

Sky Living HD attempt an ambitious undead drama. However, will Bedlam stake a challenge to its competitors or is it all bark and no bite?...

With Bedlam, Sky Living HD has stepped out of its comfort zone of female-oriented American imports and reality TV, in order to take a shot at self-produced genre programming. Bedlam is an ambitious horror-drama set in a former asylum, now a trendy apartment building which is inhabited by the Bettany family, descendents of the disgraced doctor who ran the place over fifty years ago.

The creators of this show obviously have hopes of following in the footsteps of recent UK hits such as Being Human (BBC Worldwide co-produced and has the rights to distribute it outside the UK) and, through Bedlam, have originated a compelling concept that could potentially connect Living’s traditional viewership to a wider and more centralised audience.

Bedlam follows a group of four attractive twenty-somethings led by Jed (Theo James), a mysterious young man previously put in a psychiatric ward for insisting that he could see ghosts. His arrival at Bedlam is prompted by his receiving of a number of eerie text-messages telling him to save his adopted cousin Kate Bettany. Unfortunately, Kate has never fully trusted Jed, primarily because of his shady past - but these trust issues must take a back seat as Kate desperately attempts to rent the other apartments in the building.

Kate herself lives with a geeky I.T. Technician called Ryan (Will Young of Pop Idol fame), who is in the middle of a love-triangle between her and her shy best friend Molly. Matters are further complicated by the unclear motives of Kate’s dad, Warren Bettany (Hugo Speer) who, while staking a substantial investment in the apartment project, appears to have a number of other motivations...

Bedlam is a satisying blend of drama and intrigue, with the first two episodes managing to convince me to invest my time in both the core characters and the incidental ones that enter their lives. The character of Jed is particularly compelling and well-rounded. But what really solicited my interest was the potentially award-winning back story that lies within the Bedlam property. I only hope that in the forthcoming weeks the Bedlam writers make full use of what could be the series' saving grace, especially as the hard work has already been done for them. On a weekly basis it would appear that Bedlam will deal with a different ghost or ghoul, each of which is sure to have its own traits and backstory, giving some episodic scope to the wider series story arc.

Unfortunately, as expected , there are a number of problems with the show. The cast as a whole felt slightly weak, failing as of yet to deliver on their early promise. The saving grace looks set to come from Will Young, who adds a moderate spark to what could have been a terribly clichéd role (especially in the second episode). Bedlam as a whole is let down by the fact that its horror element feels underwhelming and generic. Admittedly, one would presume that Sky Living HD has too limited a budget to accomodate many elaborate visual effects but, as Paranormal Activity proved, lower budget horror can be effective with enough innovation. That said, the show's rumoured £3m budget is hardly anemic, so there is some prospect of more effective visual scares in future episodes.

I don’t want to delve into spoilers in a show seems so story focused, but I will say that the first episode’s initial hook is expanded upon by its end, leaving me quite interested in seeing where it the season takes the story arc. Living certainly has the foundation for a hit show; I’m just hoping that they find a way to escalate the threat while revealing more interesting details about the asylum and the family which has so much history with it.

fab the see the DVD info and that review is fab isn;' ?...Will's getting such praise!

Here is the face book video of Ryan talking about the death of his Brother..great bit of acting IMO! no spoilers here really..

Sky Living’s new supernatural drama series Bedlam – which stars the ever-lovely Will Young as Ryan – started this week and is already getting great reviews.

The series also stars Charlotte Salt and Ashley Madekwe as Ryan’s flatmates Kate and Molly – the trio live in a flat in Bedlam Heights, a former asylum which Kate and her dad have converted into luxury flats.

The arrival of Kate’s cousin Jed (Theo James) heralds the start of some spooky goings-on.

To mark the show’s arrival we have this great video of Will’s character Ryan talking about the death of his brother James – stay tuned for the spooky twist at the end…

Bedlam, Monday’s 10pm on SKY LIVING

A trail for next week's episode - seems to be building nicely: http://skyliving.sky.com/bedlam-videos/a-taste-of-bedlam

Thanks for the screencaps and all the reviews and they can keep the momentum going and build on the viewing figures.

Looks as if the second episode has a much more sacrey element.

Wonder what the total viewing figures will be with the repeats? Hope the figures hold up so they commission a second series, though we don't know if Will has committed to any more.

I hope they kept the option for a second series in the actors contracts TT...i would love Will do do a second series.

This is very nice to read indeed.

Neil Jones on Face book..thanks to Julie on BD

we were thrilled with the cast - yes, they are rather good-looking and annoyingly they are really nice people too! Watching them do their first reading of the script, you could see the chemistry between Kate and Jed, Ryan and Jed, Kate and Mol straight away. From that point on it was impossible to imagine the characters as anyone else.

And this is fab too.

Yesterday’s video featuring Will Young in his new role of Ryan in SKY LIVING’s new supernatural drama series Bedlam proved so popular that our friends at the channel have very kindly sent us this great video of Will discussing the show to share with you.

The show continues for another five weeks on Monday’s 10pm on SKY LIVING and you can also pre-order it from the seenit.co.uk store.

If you’ve not seen yesterday’s great in-character piece be sure to check it out.

You can also stay up to date with Ryan and flatmates Kate, Molly and Jeb via the show’s official Facebook page.

In the UK: Sundays, 9pm, Sky Living

In the US: Saturdays, BBC America. Some time in 2011

Think of Sky Living (formerly Living TV) and what comes to mind? Largely reality TV shows like Britain's Next Top Model and daft psychic and ghost-hunting programmes like Most Haunted. So Bedlam is something of a departure for the channel: its first scripted drama.

Not much of a departure though, because this is essentially Most Haunted: The Even More Obviously Fictional Version. Featuring a host of young, pretty actors – and Will Young (yes, the winner of Pop Idol) – Bedlam is set in 'Bedlam Heights', a former mental asylum in which the patients were abused, murdered, etc, and which has now been turned into a block of luxury apartments by Hugo Speer (The Full Monty).

Can you see what's going to go wrong here?

Speer's daughter Kate (Charlotte Salt) lives in one of the flats with her pals Molly (Ashley Madekwe) and Ryan (Young). All seems to be going well until they find an old ring (no clues there) and Kate's cousin Jed (Theo James) turns up. See, the thing is, former mental patient Jed can see dead people and it turns out there's a lot of them at Bedlam Heights…

Cue the artistic, creepy trailer.

Plot

Everybody has a dark side.

That's the tag line for Sky Living's brand new spooky drama series, Bedlam.

And it's a phrase which is bound to haunt the lead characters as they settle into Bedlam Heights, the converted lunatic asylum that they have chosen to call home.

Kate (Charlotte Salt) has been working with her father, Warren (Hugo Speer) to renovate the former asylum into the latest in modern living. She's also bagged herself a rather stylish flat in to the bargain, smart girl, which she now shares with best mate Molly (Ashley Madekwe) and Ryan (Will Young).

That's until Kate's troubled cousin, Jed (Theo James), turns up. He says he just needs a place to crash, but the creepy goings on at Bedlam Heights soon start to get under his skin. Can he really 'Save Kate'? And from whom, or what, does she need saving?

Is it any good?

Well, compared to the epic disaster I was expecting, mainly as a result of Most Haunted (as well as Hex, which will probably cloud our perceptions of British-made supernatural dramas on Sky until the day we all die), this is actually surprisingly good. It's about half an hour's worth of material strung out to an hour, it's a little rough round the edges, it's got a great big sign above it on which is writ large "Yes, we have seen The Ring thank you very much" and it's hard to really like the characters. But it provides a reasonable number of scares, largely prefers intelligent suspense to blood and guts, manages to subvert expectations on a number of occasions and actually looks like some money has been spent on it.

The show itself starts strangely with an odd non-sequitur of a scene. While it does manage to fool you quite cleverly, it doesn't seem especially related to the rest of the episode and gives you false expectations about the show (is it about a professional ghost hunter? No). But after that starter, things settle down and we get to explore Bedlam Heights and the characters. To a certain extent, this does feel a little bit like Hex – young people talking about sex a lot, confident lead woman shagging while her mousey friend doesn't since she's pining after Will Young.

Fortunately, it doesn't really go down that God-foresaken path and instead concentrates on trying to work out what a particular ghost wants. This seems to take an awful long time, partly because no one believes there's a ghost until right at the end, and usually involves a lot of people naked in baths. Indeed, Theo James' role seems largely to be walking/lying down without his top/trousers on. And of course no one takes showers because it's bloody hard to be drowned by a ghost in a shower.

Over the episode, we learn that Will Young's brother was murdered; we learn that Jed's just come out of a mental hospital because he can see dead people; and the Hugo Speer is probably up to something. We also learn that ghosts can text Jed – typically "Save Kate" a lot (although this takes an interesting turn at the very end of the episode).

At the end, we're left with Will Young and Theo James, ghost hunters, ready to work out what's really happening at Bedlam Heights before any of the ghosts can try to kill them again.

Young is surprisingly good – not the world's best actor but a lot better than you might have thought. Theo James is pretty much just a sculpture come to life – disconcertingly, he talks exactly like Chris Bates on The Apprentice. Charlotte Salt is appealing as Kate while Ashley Madekwe is a little under-served by the material by fine with what she's got.

The whole thing could do with a little more pacing and action and it does occasionally descend into silliness. But actually, it's a pretty good piece that does a good job of creating atmosphere and scares through things you can only sometimes glimpse. So I'll be watching, and not just because Joanna Page is going to be in a later episode

Thanks to Nic on Baby D for the stats on the Freeview showing:

Taster weekend ratings so far for Sky 3's Free Pass content:

20:00- Cougar Town: 128k (0.5%)

21:00- Mad Dogs: 185k (0.8%)

22:00- An Idiot Abroad: 235k (1.2%)

23:00- Bedlam: 142k (1.2%)

Not bad for 11 at night, only 40k less than Mad Dogs which aired at 9pm

I would love to know what the ratings were for last night for Living and +1 it was on at it's best time yet and there were so many tweets about it [far more than when it was on sky 3]
