I would love to know what the ratings were for last night for Living and +1 it was on at it's best time yet and there were so many tweets about it [far more than when it was on sky 3]

Hope we get some figures. Just looked at the ratings thread on DS but it isn't listed.

Loved reading this comment.

I taped this not expecting much and have just watched it, and really enjoyed it, thought the storyline was good, acting solid and enough scary bits to keep you interested and wanting to watch the next ep. Fantastic place to film as well, inside and out.

Review of part two here. :)

It occurs to me that anyone who moves to a building called Bedlam Heights is clearly so thick that it’s best for everyone that they be taken out of the gene pool, so I don’t know why anyone’s bothering with this lot. But Will Young and Co. continued tonight in their quest to discover why evil spirits were pestering Leah anyway.

Adding to its impressive array of horror clichés from last week (mirrors, baths and former mental asylums to name but a few), we had radios turning themselves on, strange figures appearing on CCTV footage and that age-old horror device: the murdered pet.

The episode really was a minefield of clichés. Flickering TVs, doors slamming when they shouldn’t…the list went on and on and on. Fortunately, tonight saw the introduction of some slightly more original ones, like seatbelts hell-bent on asphyxiating people and internet pop-ups bearing spooky messages.

Horror techniques aside, Bedlam is a smart, well-paced series that is cleverly half-twenty-something-romance-drama and half-scary movie. It’s like Hollyoaks meets The Shining, although it bears little resemblance to the latter in terms of quality.

Indeed, the acting is patchy and the dialogue is even patchier. ‘Do you think she’ll mind us taking her car?’ Will Young asked the guy who’s not Will Young, as the pair borrowed Leah’s car. The guy who’s not Will Young then replied, ‘Less than she’ll mind being dead.’ Ooh, nice one.

However, tonight’s episode managed some genuine jumps as the male characters tried to piece together Leah’s past and by the end of the programme, a neat little mystery had been solved.

Now that we know why Leah is being targeted, we can safely assume there will be less detective work in future episodes and much more demon-battling instead.

Bring on those clichés…

Thanks girls - Noahs Ark over on Baby D has posted the ratings for Ep.2:

Latest word on the ratings from last night is that it got an average of 327,000 (excluding +1) a 1.8% share ... so a small drop but still really good.
And Nic posted this:

it only lost 32k of the viewers who started with it.

It's excellent though because new drama's normally lose a good chunk of it's audience from debut to episode 2 as the audience decide whether they will stick with it or not.

Some recent examples:

Outcasts - Episode 1 -4.5m

Episode 2- 3.32m

Episode 3 - 2.9m

Kidnap and Ransom - Episode 1 - 5.41m

Episode 2- 4.5m (down by 0.9m,losing 17% of it's audience)

Episode 3 - 4.48m

Marchlands - Episode 1 - 5.9m

Episode 2 -5.7m

And even though Mad Dogs pulled in an impressive 976.000 last week, it might well have a bigger percentage drop off than Bedlam.

Hope people stick with it -

Couple of reviews for Ep two.

A show about a haunted ex-asylum is fast becoming a favourite

A poignant moment by Will Young's Ryan regarding the parole hearing of his brother's killer

This week:

Bedlam Heights new resident has been targeted by a ghost with vengeance on his mind. Molly strikes up a new friendship, Jed gets a new job (other than Ghost Management), Ryan wants help in dealing with the death of his brother, and Kate is not sleeping well.

Pluses:

Nice idea re: vengeance vs angry ghost.

Great development of the Ryan and Jed friendship.

Those apartments are rather nice, even if they are haunted.

Not as scary as the first one, the tension and haunting was done in a much more erudite way.

Minuses:

Worst dead cat ever.

Why are they making Kate so unlikable?

Not very good screech marks.

The uncle is such a w*n**r.

I am quite liking the way this series is shaping up. Good characters that have complimentary facets. I am very much looking forward to next week.

THE ONE WHERE A woman with car troubles is haunted by the tune “Walking Back To Happiness”.

VERDICT Episode two is pretty much the same mix as episode one, though perhaps with a little less Ghost Whisperer and a little more Hammer House Of Horror in the make-up. The acting and dialogue remain all over the place (both sometimes great, both sometimes slightly embarassing), but the ghost-of-the-week story is a neatly plotted spooky mystery, if a tad overwrought and hinging on outrageous coincidences at times. You do have to wonder, though, if ghosts in this show can read minds, since the link between this week’s spook and his victim is pretty tenuous; how did he know she was a hit-and-runner? Maybe there’s some kind of spectral internet? Certainly whatever is trying to give Jed warnings likes using the latest tech (mobile phones last week, laptops this week.

What’s more interesting (or perhaps irritating – this early in the show’s run it’s hard to tell if it’s intentional or just sloppy writing) is how the main characters keep acting unexpectedly. Ryan suddenly turns round and says that his brother’s killers can rot in jail forever (he seemed such a bleeding heart liberal!) and Molly the hippie befriends a petty-thieving party girl.

There’s a likeable camaraderie developing between Ryan and Jed, though. Could they become the UK’s answer to the Winchesters? They need a better car…

IT’S WASSISFACE Yes, gym guy is Krod Mandoon and Meet The Spartans’ Sean Maguire, who can still count Grange Hill as his career highlight.

ANY SIGNIFICANCE? In what order are we supposed to read, “HELP HER” “YOU CAN’T” and “GO”? Does it mean, “You can’t help her. Go” Or, “You can’t go. Help her”? Significantly different.

BEST LINE

Jed: “You’re not trying to get me electrocuted are you, Uncle Warren?”

Warren: “It’s a pity they didn’t give you some of that at the hospital.”

Culture box review of Ep 2.. four stars..

Having dealt with the dodgy plumbing last episode, hunky clairvoyant Jed (Theo James) now focuses on the building’s car park, where spooky antics surrounding new Bedlam Heights tenant Leah (EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing star Kara Tointon) could mean danger for everyone, whether they have a permit or not.

Running from her troubled past relationship, Leah is initially helped by Molly (Ashley Madekwe), but when Jed and Ryan dig deeper into her life the truth reveals something far darker.

Meanwhile, tough landlady Kate’s bad dreams continue as she claws her way along corridors and shouts at the air. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Molly’s friend Zoe also gathers pace, although Kate’s father and building owner Warren refuses to investigate further. Finally, there is some serious signposting for the series’ remaining four episodes, with it becoming increasingly clear that Warren is a wrong ‘un, highlighted by the always reliable Hugo Speer giving yet another sinister turn after his murderous appearance in last year’s Skins.

Whilst undoubtedly a prime candidate for ‘sick building syndrome’, Bedlam as a show continues from last week’s strong opening episode with some solid writing and superior pacing. It’s a pleasant change for a supernatural show not to rely heavily on special effects for its shocks, and by and large the mood stays just on the right side of not being comical.

A special mention should also go to Pop Idol winner Will Young, whose understated characterisation of Ryan doesn’t distract from the overall nature of the show, allaying our initial fears of stunt casting. Despite not one but two ex-‘Enders this week (the other being a brief turn by Sean Maguire as a love interest for Kate), Bedlam so far hasn’t got too bogged down in guest star cameos, but it would be nice to see more unknown actors getting a look in further down the line.

Thanks Bev.

Nice to read another positive Will mention. Carries much more weight than the couple of blinkered posters on DS. :P
