Bedlam is also Premiering In Canada on Saturday night.

This is from the Toronto Sun.

Spooky ‘Bedlam’ debuts on Space

The first episode of the terrifying British series Bedlam makes a pretty strong argument for showers over baths.

Then again, if you're living in a building that used to be an insane asylum and just may be haunted, practically any time you're alone it could be curtains, right?

Bedlam makes its Canadian debut Saturday, Oct. 1 on Space. If you like scary stuff -- spooky scary, not slasher scary -- then you'll be crazy for Bedlam.

The series is set at an apartment block called Bedlam Heights, a former mental facility that was closed down due to abuse of patients. Lead character Jed Harper (played by Theo James) has a history of mental illness himself, but what he actually has is the unwanted ability to see ghosts.

"Whether you believe him or not, the only person who thinks this place is inhabited by ghosts, whatever you want to call them, is Jed," James said.

"No one else is aware of that. They just see this old building. It might have a connection to the family, but it's not that anyone else is aware of it. It's only when he arrives that things start changing."

Do they ever. Stay dry, my friends.

Bedlam to Premiere on BBC America Saturday, Oct 1 at 10/9c

http://www.flickdirect.com/images/news/3398.jpg

This Saturday on BBCA a new show from producer David Allison airs called Bedlam. The show was first premiered to audiences at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con. The show takes place in England and centers on a newly renovated apartment complex that was once an insane asylum. If you can't figure out where this show is going than you clearly don't watch much TV. The new residents are plagued by spirits of the former patients and one new comer has the unique ability to speak to the dead and is willing to help them find their final rest.

In an interview with David Allison he called the show Melrose Place with ghosts, so we can expect a certain amount of skin during the episodes. Certainly during the first show we see a nice dalliance of steamy passion between two of the main characters, Kate and Ryan (Charlotte Salt & Will Young). Kate is the daughter of the building's owner Warren (Hugo Speer) who is something of a cold fish and certainly as more episodes unfold we will find out why. Ryan lives in one of the apartments with Kate and Molly (Ashley Madekwe) who harbors a crush on Ryan. Kate complicates things by acting on this knowledge and making moves on Ryan. Molly discovers this of course and needless to say this puts stress on their friendship.

Unbeknownst to all three of them there is a ghost haunting their apartment and this is where the fourth member of the cast comes into play. Theo James plays Jed Harper; a childhood friend of Kate's who re-enters her life under mysterious circumstances. We learn that as a child Jed experienced strange hallucinations and naturally his malady was diagnosed as schizophrenia so he was placed in an asylum. Now as an adult Jed has accepted that his visions are not part of a disease of the mind but actually ghosts of people who have died and are unable to move forward in their spiritual journey. Now back in Kate's life he is seeking to locate the source of the paranormal activity so he can help.

Along the way Jed must learn to re-integrate himself into the lives of his old friends and that isn't easy considering he has been on his own for many years now. As the attacks on the apartment increase in severity it is up Jed to solve it before one or all of his friends come to a grisly end.

There are some good points and one bad point about this show, but let's take it one step at a time. The good: the actors in the show are well equipped to handle the material and do an excellent job of coming off convincing. The drama between the characters, having nothing to do with ghosts, is superb and the writers hint at enough deeper issues that you'll definitely be coming back for more. The ghosts in the show are very creepy and given the location it only helps to enhance the overall tension within. That brings us to the highlight and that's the locations. In David Allison's interview he mentioned how when he was scouting locations to shoot the show in he came across many old, decrepit and yet beautiful buildings that really evoked the kind of emotions he was hoping for. The building they chose for the asylum/apartment complex is certainly a place you would and wouldn't want to live in.

The one issue with this show is the most obvious; the concept. Right now there are so many supernatural shows on TV that another almost seems redundant. True, the premise is unique somewhat and that will attract the audience but once you've finished the first episode you find yourself asking, "Isn't this just another ghost show"? Hopefully the fact that the show is utilizing a hot commodity won't hinder it in the long run because regardless the show is very well done.

So if you're in the market for a new show to sink your teeth into, set your DVR for this Saturday at 10p.m. EST on BBCA for Bedlam, you will not be disappointed.

Thanks Bev another great find :D I'm still very interested to see how it goes down over the pond, it has to do well to gain us a second series, after all BBC America put up a large chunk of cash for this. Just hope Will can fit in filming into his already busy schedule.

Thanks Bev.

High praise for the acting. :D I don't think Will will be involved again but I'd still be interested in another series and how it pans out in America and Canada.

Loved watching that Bev, what great promo, they certainly have packed in loads into a minute, as you say a nice lot of Ryan in there :D

I'm not so sure Gill, I think the timing is wrong for sure, but where they haven't said a definite yes and a time for filming no one has been able to set aside the time in their busy schedules, and as far as I know its only Theo that isnt busy, I cant see them having 3 new characters to replace Molly Ryan and Kate, as it would just be too wierd to do that, I think they may reschedule it in so they all can play their parts as normal. :D

Review: Bedlam, “Cohabitants”

What do you get when you cross Melrose Place with Ghost Adventures? Meet Bedlam, a goofy, spooky, sexy new supernatural drama on BBC America, starring four young flat mates and an old mental asylum.

SPOILER ALERT: If you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading here.

Rule number one of most ghost stories: young people are stupid. And the case is no different for Kate (Charlotte Salt), Ryan (Will Young), and Molly (Ashley Madekwe). They’re hot, they’re naive, they’re sensitive, and they see no problem in living in an ultra swank, ultra gentrified asylum. Dubbed Bedlam Heights, the building has been in Kate’s family for ages.

No coincidence, Kate’s adopted cousin Jed (Theo James) not only sees dead people, but witnesses how they’ve died as well. The whole family thinks he’s crazy and have shipped him off to a number of loony bins in his own time. As the central figure of the show, however, he makes for one intriguing protagonist. And James isn’t too hard on the eyes.

The pilot revolves around the death of Ryan’s younger brother, who mysteriously drowned a year prior to that day. Ryan is still hung up on the death, leaving notes and keeping around-the-clock surveillance on the spot he died. Around the same time, ghosts are popping up left and right whenever these kids wear a black onyx ring. Turns out, the ring belonged to an extremely pissed off past occupant.

To make a long story short, whoever wears the ring almost drowns in the same way Ryan’s brother did. Through the use of mysterious text messages (“Save Kate,” “Save Kate,” “Save Kate”… you get the picture) and intuition, Jed picks up on the happenings and attempts to intersect. He fails gloriously each and every time, going so far as to cockblock Ryan and Kate. All is eventually smoothed over by the last five minutes, and our reluctant hero saves the day. Turns out the ghost, who was killed centuries before by drowning, wanted someone to put a ring on it.

However shoestring the central plot of the pilot may be, I was entertained all the way through. Reminiscent of the BBC’s hit series Being Human, Bedlam puts on a good show, throwing in enough jumps and spooks to keep wimps like me on edge for 45 minutes. The kids are all right, too, particularly James and Young, who showed a budding on-screen friendship. And then there’s Kate’s creepy father, played by Hugo Speer, who adds a whole ‘nother layer of fun, curled mustache drama.

There’s nothing wrong with Theo James in a towel, either.

Consensus: Bedlam wont break new grounds, but for a low budget, British supernatural, it’s a fun way to spend Saturday night, especially in these weeks leading up to Halloween. For extra fun, sit back and turn out the lights.

Rating: three and a half stars.
