John Lennon's letter to folk singer

John Lennon wrote a letter to calm a folk singer who once complained that success and wealth could ruin his songwriting, the musician has revealed.

Steve Tilston was just 21 in 1971 when the star read the interview he had done with now defunct ZigZag magazine.

In the hand-written letter, now revealed for the first time, Lennon told the young musician not to worry about becoming wealthy because it would not change what he felt inside.

Lennon wrote the letter - signed from him and Yoko Ono - just months after the Beatles split up in 1970. He sent it to the youngster and the reporter who interviewed him, Richard Howell, at the magazine's offices.

But for some reason the letter never reached the musician and the first time he saw it was in 2005 when an American collector contacted him for verification.

"It was so frustrating because Lennon even included his home phone number on the top of the letter," said the 60-year-old, who has just published his first novel All For Poor Jack.

The megastar wrote: "Being rich doesn't change your experience in the way you think.

"The only difference, basically, is that you don't have to worry about money - food - roof etc. But all other experiences - emotions - relationships - are the same as anybodies, I know, I've been rich and poor, so has Yoko (rich - poor - rich) so whadya think of that.

"Love John and Yoko."

Ringo Starr's birthplace faces the bulldozers

At first glance it is hard to imagine anyone objecting to plans to demolish a street of dilapidated Victorian two-up-two downs in a neglected part of Liverpool. But when Beatles fans realised the plans included the destruction of drummer Ringo Starr's birthplace, they accused the council of cultural vandalism bordering on the criminal.

The connection with Starr aside ... I think in the current climate ... with social housing being at an all-time low ... this is disgraceful. I've seen these houses close up ... and they're a lot better built than a lot of crap that's being thrown up at the moment. We moved out of Liverpool (city centre) in 1969 ... we were told our houses were to be demolished as they were 'slums'. Guess what? Those same houses are still standing and they've been done up to an immaculate standard and sold off to the highest bidders.

If it can be saved then it should, but not at all costs. We have lost a lot of our heritage in the name of progress, sometimes you have to say enough.

Day-Tripper Dame Shirley Bassey will fly into London for The Beatles' 50th Anniversary Concert. She joins Beverley Knight, Tony Christie, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and more at the Royal Albert Hall on October 28. It's her first performance in the capital since appearing with Gary Barlow at last year's Children in Need.

Elvis Presley’s white buck shoes feature in Beatles exhibit:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/elvis-presley_shoes1.jpg

That the Beatles were fans of Elvis Presley is no secret. John Lennon said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Elvis’ famous white buck shoes have now become a new addition to the Beatles Story exhibition. The shoes – worn in the 1957 film, Jailhouse Rock – have been lent to the Albert Dock-based collection by the estate of Presley himself.

George Harrison said, "I remember at school there was all that thing about Elvis. When a record came along like ‘Heartbreak Hotel' it was so amazing. We know Elvis is great. Seeing Elvis was like seeing the Messiah arrive."

Paul McCartney also told of his love for Elvis. "Every time I felt low, I just put on an Elvis record and I'd feel great, beautiful." So maybe it's not so ironic that the Beatles Story is displaying Elvis' shoes this month. It's the first time the shoes have been displayed outside of Presley's Graceland home.

Well it looks like the X factor is having a Beatles theme, no doubt they will all murder classic songs. Why can't Cowell leave well alone.

Couldn't agree more! Especially after what Wagner did to Elvis a couple of weeks back
