I didn't even know there was still a mods lounge! I thought it had been removed years ago. What was said? I'm a trifle annoyed! Rich was one of my favourite posters here

I don't think i'm at place to say as I only saw the tale end but basically he gave admin an ultimatum him or someone else.

Oh dear! Ultimatums are never a good idea ... didn't Brian Clough give one of those to Derby County?

I think it should be means tested and stopped for people who go abroad for winter. My mum's 84 and gets it but admits that she doesn't really need it as she gets 3 pensions, the State pension, my dad's works pension and her work pension.

The wife's auntie and uncle get it too but spend Sept. to March EVERY YEAR in Philippines.

If it becomes means tested and people have to apply ... watch out for the headlines of poorer old folk (genuine candidates for the allowance) dying of hypothermia because they were too proud to apply.

Seriously ... we're talking about a few hundred pounds PER YEAR per pensioner. Sure ... there are those that don't need it but the amount spent pales into insignificance compared to the ludicrous amounts paid out EVERY MONTH in incapacity, disability living, carers allowances, etc, etc.

I say just kill everyone who can't afford to pay for themselves! I mean ... do it nicely ... like suggesting people volunteer for 'Carousel' as in Logan's Run ... or better still ... become a Soylent Greener!

There is no point in stating that people don't use it and spend months abroad as it would cost money to sort out everyone who does need it and everyone who doesn't need it then what if someone loses their money that was rich and needs it again. That in itself would be a headache.

The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

They should be targeting rich people by taking more of their bonuses, charging them more on road tax etc. I do not believe for one second that these bankers who are earning millions of pounds a year deserve anything more than 100k. Don't even get me started on footballers either.

The LAST thing we need is higher fucking road tax. It's extremely expensive as it is given that we pay a insane amount of Fuel Tax.

Puttin Road Tax up harms those who are less well off and have older cars that they can't afford to replace that have high levels of CO2 emissions.

think so.

Don't even get me started on fuel prices we are conned 40p a litre in the US.

Why do we pay so much again?

Wholesale cost of fuel, a penny or two for delivery, 2-3p for the seller then Fuel duty and VAT. [slightly simplified]

You actually make $h!t all on a litre of petrol from the retailers point of view.

IIRC its 74p in the £ of the cost of petrol is Taxation.

LMAO

My aunt for example, 68, ran a very successful business that she sold up, takes 3 holidays a year, drives a Porsche Cayenne etc, lives in a house you probably would need a sat nav to find way round it is so big, she is legally entitled to a winter fuel allowance, she is legally entitled to free eye tests, she is legally entitled to free prescriptions, she is legally entitled to a free bus pass, its madness that state money can go to her and there are millions of elderly in this country like her.

Scrap everything for the likes of her and just have the money going to the shuffling old ladies who have to turn off bars of heating on the fire in the winter to save money etc

Millions like your Auntie??? Shome exaggeration shurely...... Where the hell you getting that from...? And if you 'Means Test' it, that means you have to hire more of your hated "bureaucrats" in order to administer it, wouldn't you.....?

Elderley people who are well off are probably these posh upper class twits that have always been well off and I wouldn't say there were millions of them around.

Exactly...

I'm not against means-testing it in principle, but surely the administration costs required to do that would mean there would be very minimal savings made (if any). Plus I don't trust this government to ONLY take it away from the wealthiest...

That's where a lack of information is frustrating. As I said earlier I have no idea how many people would have to lose these benefits for the savings to outweigh the admin costs.

Yep... They probably make up about 3% of the elderly, at most. It's a tiny figure...
