So, England squad tonight and there's a debate whether we should call up 'neutralised' midfielder Mikel Arteta. He's said he'd think about if asked and Capello has kept quiet about it. With Lampard out injured (:D), and Gerrard and Barry hardly setting the world alight in the centre, would you call upon Arteta or not?

Personally, I would. He's clearly good enough and has far more creativity than most of the English players. Yes, I can see the arguments for playing a younger player like Rodwell, Huddlestone or Cattermole but they'll all get their chances anyway, and it is a squad - they can be called up too. An England midfield of Gerrard, Parker, Arteta, Lennon, Milner, Young, Walcott and Johnson for me.

Also, everyone else does it. The Germans, the French, the Portugese, the Italians, the Argentinians. So why not us? Owen Hargreaves and John Barnes could hardly be called 'English'. One played for us because he's got an English parent, the other because he came to England as a teenager.

we could have had Cudicini once upon a time, but now we have Hart so yay.

I think calling Arteta up would be a good idea. If he does I just hope he shows up how inadequate Lampard has been for some time. Form not names Capello, remember that?

Don't see why he shouldn't be chosen

Half the England cricket team over the last few years weren't born in this country and France seem to have cherry picked the best players from the African colonies so no reason why Artera shouldn't play for us

Pick the best available is what I say, so he's in my squad. Plus if he plays for us he won't be scoring against us later on

Scott Carson, Ben Foster, Joe Hart

Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Kieran Gibbs, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, Matthew Upson

Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard, Adam Johnson, James Milner, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ashley Young

Darren Bent, Carlton Cole, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney

Another time maybe...

Very disappointing to see the likes of SWP, Upson and Carrick back in.

According to some reports, Arteta has to be given British citizenship first. As he hasn't applied for it, that would mean he wouldn't be eligible for at least another six months.

far too many averages players.

I can only think of seven players in that squad that other top international teams would like to have...

I'd like to see,

Hart

Johnson Jakielka Cahill Cole

Gerrard Barry Milner

Walcott Rooney A.Johnson

Central defence looks a bit inexperienced though...we need to try playing 4-3-3 when attacking and a 4-5-1 defending. I think we have the players to do this now...

We don't have many other options in central defence if Terry and Ferdinand are both out though. There are Carragher and King Crock but I don't think either would be any better, as they've already proved. I suppose thinking about it Upson is there for his experience....

Carragher's too slow, the World Cup showed that up, and he only came out of retirement for the glory as the media were getting all excited as usual. Lescott was awful last time he was in an England shirt, bombing down the left, leaving the back completely exposed.

Pretty much sums up England is in decline.

Don't thinl Arteta playing for England would be a good idea...Scotland on the other hand...
Apparently the rules state that if a player represents his country in an official tournament, he must have held a passport for the country he later wants to play for at that time. Arteta played for Spain in the U-16 Euros and U-17 World Championships so he will never be eligible to play for England.

He should bring a case under the human rights act, he was a CHILD when he played for Spain so it is unfair that something he did as a child should damage his career as an adult

He never represented Spain as an adult in any tournament only as a child so he is being denied the chance to play for the country he wishes to play for

It's a shame if true, and completely daft.

I'm sure FIFA will change the rules in a few years anyway when it's someone else.
