A fantastic interview with Sir Morrissey from today's Guardian - where he reignites a racism row after calling the Chinese a "subspecies" over their horrific treatment of animals..... so... is he right, wrong or just being Morrissey?

Yeah, because of course we're such nicey, nicey people to animals in Europe what with veal crates, eating horses, bullfighting and dog-fighting aren't we.....?

Interesting interview though, even though the interviewer doesn't really press him on why he said it....

He is wrong, end of. Although China has it's issues they're still humans and like Grimly says we're hardly big animal lovers and kind are we.
Well he's wrong, obviously. I adore the man's music and he comes up with brilliant quotes from time to time but this isn't one of them.
Read something about Morrissey being a Nationalist/Racist, can't say I've liked him much since then, even when I am against Conservatism/Thatcherism.

He "flirted" with Skinhead/NF imagery in the early 90s, and draped himself in a Union Jack... The NME called him on it at the time, reasonably asking him to contextualise it (and also song titles such as "Bengali In Platforms" and "National Front Disco") or explain why he was doing it, Moz, being Moz, didn't really, so NME naturally assumed the worst at the time... He had every chance to issue a rebuttal, but didn't... It somewhat disappointed me, seeing as how I was a big fan of The Smiths and I really, really would have liked an explanation from the man, as did tens of thousands of his fellow fans who wrote in to NME asking what the fukk he was doing....

Kind of gave me the impression at the time that he thought he didn't need to explain himself to his fans, a tad arrogant and dismissive really....

I always got the impression songs like "National Front Disco" weren't supposed to be serious, and he did make up for it with "Margaret On The Guillotine" :P

The line "England for the English/England for the English" from National Front Disco and the line "Life is hard enough when you belong here" from Bengali In Platforms, kind of needed a bit of contextualisation and explanation otherwise it could easily be misinterpreted (or indeed adopted by the very people he may not have liked it to be adopted by), if indeed, he was just "playing a character", then he needed to actually explicitly say that this is what he was doing.... The NME at this time (late 80s-mid90s, the time which I was regularly reading it) had a LOT of smart journalists like Steven Wells, Dele Fadele, Steve Sutherland, etc, who were attempting to interrogate Moz on what he was actually meaning, and he just didn't bother to explain it.

And now, coming up and saying "the Chinese are a sub-species", isn't exactly helping matters.. Is he just being "funny"? Well, who knows, the interviewer doesn't appear to bother to follow up on the remark, bad journalism really.....

I dont go along with this really simplistic "Animals are better than humans" type garbage that extremist vegans and ALF types spout..... Cruelty to animals is wrong, sure, but it's not as if it's exactly confined to the Chinese sub-continent, and the thing is, by complete and utter contrast, if you were to kill or poach a Panda in China, the punishment for that would be incredibly severe.... I believe someone was actually sentenced to death for doing this some time ago....? But, hey, funny how Moz doesn't see fit to take that into consideration innit...?
