I think if this does do disastrously, then they should give up. No one seems to be interested in them anymore (were they ever?)

I think they just took advantage of a very loyal fanbase, willing to lap up multiple formats of any old rubbish, in a terrible period for sales. This resulted in 7 #1's, the majority of them completely forgettable and undeserving.

where are biffy & pretty reckless albums please :)

Biffy 3+3

Pretty 10+12

I don't think we should make a cross on McFly just yet. Firstly, they might have longevity with this single; secondly - they have another one before the album; thirdly - the sales for this week could be quite high and maybe they'll reach 40k which is not surely bad? I think if they clear 100k with this single then there's still potential in them.

To be fair, Sugababes cleared 100K with Get Sexy, About A Girl and Wear My Kiss - and look what happened to Sweet 7.

Yes it is too early, but if this keeps dropping throughout the week, and drops alot next week - then it's gonna look likely they'll become the male Sugababes

Many HMV's are not stocking the CD(some HMV's don't even stock singles like mine) there's quite a few manys moaning to Mcfly about not being able to get hold of the CD.

They seem to have done better on Itunes this time round but i think this was allways going to be a very hard week anyway and it's not as if they've had a number 5 before as they did in 2004 and they've entered the lower end at 9 in 2005 and number 18 in 2008

McFly could get a way with a 30k fanbase in 2003-2007 and get high peaking singles.

Unfortunately for them, the sales climate in 2010 is far healthier and stuck with the same (or less) fans, their singles were always going to peak much lower down the charts.

I wonder how far the XX will go tomorrow, could go top 3 on the back of the Mercury Prize winner.

Sugababes is the entirely different story and the poor 'Sweet 7' sales were due to various reasons, such as line-up change, early leak of the album etc. We don't have any of it in McFly, just the sound change. And even after those 25k sales of S7 the Sugababes 4.0 are writing the new album now.

We'll see what will happen to McFly's album and next single. And after all, the decision of dropping is on the record label shoulders who will know about their profits much better then us.

I am surprised people are now stating McFly may be finished last week they were odds on favourties for No 1 on BJ.Its a shame because the song is so much better live but they should never have gone down the elcetro/autotune route. What is happening with Alesha not sure why radio have not supported the song.Really hope Alex has a big enough lead to hang onto No 1.

is it only me who thinks that's a bit sad, people buying an album because judges in a panel said it was the best?

a conversation in the future with somebody who bought that album will probably read like this:

"you like the XX? where did you find out about them? hear a song on Myspace? see one of their gigs, hear their stuff on radio?"

"nope, the Mercury Music Prize people told me to buy the album"

unlike Biffy and Mumford And Sons who were also nominated, their albums rose last week due to their peformances being shown on TV at the Reading/Leeds festival which is viable as festival goers probably bought the album after seeing them and I expect TV audiences did the same but people buying an album because some "judges" said it's the best is just pathetic in my honest opinion

then again it reminds me of a similar scenario that happens on a ITV1 Saturday night TV show when "judges" tell us that somebody is the best they've ever heard and then expect people to go out and buy that album/single cause they said so.

I had a listen to the XX album last year and although they are quite unique, I thought it was quite boring if I'm being completely honest. Then again I like stuff from a different genre so there will be other people who don't like listening to stuff I like and vice-versa. Album will probably go top 3 this week I think though, it's already No1 on the Amazon chart after being quite low down yesterday

Mcfly are NOT on that sort of record deal they have a 50/50 with Island records and everything that is being done is mainly down to Mcfly who are getting the last say. They are still with their own label super records too.

Mcfly are doing better on other places now such as Brazil and Aus so it really makes no differance and they are still able to sell out gigs here which is what matters more.

Brandon still #1 Album :D

Also holding well in Singles :D

Happy for Kylie too

Your analysis is not really right or fair. Winning the Mercury Prize is great publicity and it will be all over the papers, so it will allow the XX to reach a wider audience. So far their success was pretty much confidential in the UK, and it is snobbery to blame people for not knowing some music act.

Not everyone in the UK has the time/interests in spending the day browsing music forums and all, we can't blame them for being sometimes late on some albums and artists.

It's not that people will buy it because they're told to, they will buy it because thanks to the Mercury Prize they will have finally heard about it, liked it, and wanted to buy it.

And yes anyway, looking at the history of the Mercury Prize, you can tell the winners are generally quite good, or at least worth a listen. It's like if one of your best friends (that you know has great taste is music) tells you that this album is great and you should listen to it. You will give it a listen and if you like you might buy it.

The whole "people are sheeps buying what they're told to" is so old now. We should look more into it and go further than this simple explanation.

Yea they're doing better ww than any of british urban pop that has been no. 1 recently (Roll Deep, Tinie Tempah etc)

I'd really like to see their chart runs in those foreign countries cause so far I haven't really seen a proof of their success "worldwide".

Here's why McFly will NOT get dropped anytime soon:

In fact here's what the Guardian said recently about it:

The band agreed to a new 50/50 share deal, in which the label profits from tours and merchandise but the band make more on record sales than the usual 16%. Because Universal don't have to worry as much about losing revenue from CD sales, they've allowed McFly to offer all their music directly from their new website on a subscription basis.

These X Factor stars are taking some very unfashionable genres to #1 recently. Two reggae influenced pop #1's in a row, it's like we've been transported back to 1994!

This is called 360 degrees record deal when the label has a share in basically all artist's activities, but at the same time gets lesser profit share from the albums. Island Records love this scheme and deservedly so, I think, as the albums sales are going lower and lower.
