If I were a new potential fan of Elvis, but didn't own any record, what first abum would you recommend to me to buy first, and so convince me that his back catelogue would be worth collecting?

Remember it doesn't have to be your favourite, but the one that would convince someone to buy more albums.

Great question, Brian :D

I would give them an album that shows the range of songs Elvis recorded during his lifetime  The ones that immediately spring to mind are:

Elvis: 30#1 Hits and the follow up Elvis IIs 2nd To None

but personally, the one I would recommend would be Elvis By The Presleys

This one is a reflection of his life (in the choice of tracks) and the 2nd disc contains a couple of Private Recordings and Alternate Takes.

And for the first time Elvis CD buyer, I would recommend Elvis Presley - The Live Greatest Hits. You just have to hear Elvis sing his music live and this is a great starting point

Hopefully, after listening to these great albums, they would want to listen to more because there are so many fantastic songs that the non or casual Elvis fan have never heard and believe me, they are missing so much. I know cos I used to be one of them ;) Another great type of music that Elvis recorded (and personally loved) is his Gospel music. Take a listen for instance, to Elvis Presley Gospel Favourites and you'll find out why he won 3 Grammys for his Gospel albums :D

I would recommend, ''The Jungle Room Sessions'' and ''The Memphis Sessions''. I love both those Albums.
